- Join me in this vlog where David and I take you High Street shopping to Guildford in Surrey (U.K). I have spent so much of my life in Guildford, I wanted to show you around this ancient and historical town. Including showing you the sad closure of stores such as House of Fraser and Debenhams. We also show you Guildford Castle.
Always love David’s comments. He’s such a sunshine ☀️
Sophie, I find that your vlogs are becoming the only thing I care to watch anymore. I would watch if you did one every day! Thank you for always brightening our day.❤
The way you and David talk to each other shows what a great couple you are, enjoying this new channel very much ❤️🌻
David is so lovely 😊, love how you both talk to each other ❤ so respectfully and so considerate ❤❤❤
the good parents I never had 😆
How cute is Guildford! Thanks for letting us visit with you! I'm sorry that River Island has closed, I hope there are still some in London! 😘
Hi Sophie and David! Thanks for taking us around! Yes, malls are looking apocalyptic! Even Beverly Hills is empty! Saks Fifth Ave Long standing Luxury department store closed. It’s stunning how on line shopping has really effected our lives in this way. 😯😑
I love England so much. If I could, I'd pack up and move over there. But since I couldn't, thank you so much for these Vlogs. They put a smile on my face. I feel as if I'm there. So thank you so much.
I really enjoy this channel because I like it when you and David go to different places to shop and different hotels or historical sites!! Sometimes, just doing luxury or whatever all the time gets boring!
I agree!😊
Malls have been dying for years in the US or at least in California. The Large malls have begun to make themselves more of an experience, hosting events, having places for kids to play and more restaurants.
everything has been dying for years in Cali? 😆
Funny that when the big mall opened in my area in the 80s, it literally killed business in town. A lot of them anyway. However, now people prefer to shop IN town. That is if they aren't shopping online. The anchor department stores in our mall closed (California). Sears, Robinsons May, Nordstrom. A Target moved into one of them. Plus, the mall has many empty stores. Just like everywhere else. We don't have High Street. We have strip malls.
Kiehl's is actually an American brand. They were originally a compounding pharmacy on 3rd Avenue in NYC where they made their own lotions and potions. For a long time they used only natural ingredients and the products had a very short shelf life. They were eventually sold off to the L'oreal group and then they ended up in high end department stores like Neiman Marcus. Now, they're pretty much everywhere. 30 years ago it was IFYKYK and very much flew under the radar.
The trinket shops could be good for teenagers, concert goers, and teachers who want to buy some relates to affordable “prizes” to motivate students in the classrooms, or that’s how I see them most used. In Asia, students love those to stay engaged in school and make themselves more comfortable in non air conditioned classrooms closer to the summer.
Hi Sophie!!! Good grief 2hrs late😢. Hope you and David had a great weekend. Going to watch your vid now. Ok going to hop back in...David 0:24 is an absolute hoot, made me giggle when he squeezed that honk thing!! Hugs xx
Where I live in the southern US we are losing a few stores, but what bothers me more is the lack of inventory in my local luxury Dept stores. SAKS, Neiman Marcus etc. One of my SA’s told me that so much is online and the store does promotions that are online only and the SA’s can’t apply them in store so they lose sales. I feel terrible because my SA has been there for 25 yrs and may have to leave because sales are down. Often there’s promos on things I want and I wish they could be used in store also. Shopping has changed so much and I’m not a fan. I enjoy shopping in person.
You raise so many valid points, especially around promotions. They should match in-store to online really. Plus, I sometimes find they don't have sizes, whereas online, you have the full selection :( Thank you so much for taking the time out to comment!xx
I live in Texas (Dallas Fort Worth ) and have 9 major malls within 30 miles of my house. All of them are doing extremely well except for one.
I'd LOVE to visit Dallas! The food, way of life, everything. And now it sounds like the shopping is great there too!! Thank you so much for sharing my friend xx
@@LookNowbySophieShohet I’ve lived here for 3 years and still founding stuff to do.
I used to live in Fort Worth. Hulen Mall is the one I used to go to. Small world
I used to work in the Debenhams in Bristol as a teenager in the 90s It'd been there for years all through my childhood and teenage years. I live in Australia now and couldn't believe It'd gone into administration, I think all stores in the UK shut down in 2021. Btw I love this new chanel of yours, I look forward to your vlog style videos.
Lovely seeing Guildford and going shopping with you & David! I agree with him, Kiehl's is great for men's skincare. My daughter loves shops like Flying Tiger that have all the random little things haha! I was surprised last time I visited Melbourne, how much the shopping malls were expanding there, when I see them going the other direction in other countries.
Yes, lots of stores are closing at the Malls here in New Jersey. Even the high end Short Hills Mall. We have too many stuff, we cannot shop forever. I like to go to the store, I can see the quality of things before I purchase. Thanks for sharing.
This is wonderful, I have never been to Guildford.
Absolutely love your shopping and travel videos. Thank you for taking us with you and David and I am learning so much. I love looking at places in the UK. Keep them coming and cheers from the US.
Sophie a lot of those junk type shops are great for kids and supplies for those unusual events, parties supplies etc etc 😊
Love getting to know David more, he's a great guy ❤😊
Hi Sophie! Loving the new channel! :)
I'm so glad! And thank you for watching this! :) xx
❤love your new channel guys been watching you for yrs. but with the changing times it’s great to watch your videos. From south west Devon x
It was great to see you and David exploring Guilford. It’s sad to see so many shops closing down, but I loved how you still managed to find some interesting places. The bit about the Junk Shop had me chuckling - it’s always fun to see what quirky items they have. And those neon lights in Oliver Bonas were so cool! The history bits about the Angel Gate Hotel and Guilford Castle were fascinating too. Thanks for sharing your day with us, and hope you both had a wonderful time despite the changes in the town! 😊
Omg I’ve been sleeping on your new channel!!! So glad I found it, fab vlog in guildford ❤❤
Hi Sophie, I do get No. 7 at my local Ulta store. I like their skin care products. It's a shame to see the high street so empty these days. I kind of think that all started during the pandemic, with everyone shopping online.
We have No7 in Australia, similar store to boots called Priceline. Kheil’s is American, have seen standalone stores in New York.
Hi Sophie. Thanks for the vlog. It was fun! I am from KL, Malaysia. Ever since covid, we have had a couple of smaller malls close down BUT the bigger more popular ones have surged in popularity in the recent 2 years!! Kuala Lumpur is a bustling hub of malls and we love to go coz its always so hot out, and cool indoors 😂 Malaysians love their malls and its a very nice way to spend the day, eating, shopping, watching a movie, reading in bookshops etc...getting a blowout or a mani/pedi...endless stuff to do. Please come. My hubby and i would love to host you n David ❤
Lol the store at the beginning is for kids. Medal is like for kids games. The crafts, piggy bank, pens. All cute fun stuff for kids 😊❤
Hi Sophie, here in Italy the situation regarding shops is very similar sadly. I live in the north and, if you don’t count city centres, there are often new and big mall opening but then after the initial excitement a lot of stores shut down quite quickly, most of them are empty, no costumer around. I easily understand why: rents are keeping increasing, electricity and heating bills, the cost of employees is very high they can’t keep up with online stores.
I’m in Australia 🇦🇺, the main things in the streets now are “ service “ things , coffee shops , hair dressers , nail bars , optometrist , pharmacy cafe but no clothes shops or jewellery or department stores ..
Kiehl's is an American brand. You can buy No 7 in Ulta and Walgreens in the United States. (Walgreens bought Boots and moved it's headquarters from the US to the UK for tax reasons.).
We get No.7 in Shoppers Drug Mart (like your Boots, but Canadian). I love just walking around places in the UK, looking at the architecture. Besides a few buildings here and there, and older cities like Ottawa and Quebec City, nothing in Canada is really very old.
I enjoyed this vlog a lot. It is good to see some high street malls. Still a lot of eye candies and interesting stuff. Also, the places you show are not typical tourist spots so even if I go to England, I probably would not have a chance to see. Thanks!
I love UK history. One minute in a modern shopping centre, then an old haunted hotel and round the corner an 800 year old Castle! 😁 I think we often take it for granted but its amazing what can be found in our city centres.
A lot of shops are closing here too. From time to time new ones open, but they don't stay for long. They are brands from the big retail chains that you can find in every city. They try their luck, but it usually doesn't last.
Haven’t been to Guildford for about a year and can’t believe how much it’s changed in that short space of time 🙁 The big Debenhams was always handy there too.x
I agree Sarah, it's so quiet there now :( xx
Most malls are truly dying. Its very sad, when we were younger the mall was the place to be. I miss the great shops we used to have like most Gap srores in the states left malls. I miss the Limited and NY and Co.
Developers are coming in and putting condos or apartments in most mall parking lots and usng the rest for restaurants, green space etc.
Also, alot of Crunch gyms or Planet Fitness are using the space in empty malls.
The makeup you mentioned most of it is in the states.
We have alot of pharmacies like CVS , Walmart, Target and Walgreens that carry No. 7. We have Revolution and Kiels brand is in most department stores. Also affordable makeup in the US, drugstore kinds are Covergirl and Loreal.
Enjoying the new channel. Thanks Sophie!
Hi Sophie! Love this video, I really miss living in UK. It really is sad to learn Debenhams and those department stores closing down 😢David really has an eye for shopping 😂
We do have both Kiel’s and No. 7 in the US.
I was going to say that also as I have purchased #7 before.
Hi Sophie
Great, you are taking us down the High St. I used to live in the UK, and it's sad how things are declining. There are more Scandinavian shops in the UK, such as Flying Tiger, and they are great for kids or people on a low income, especially seasonal products. Not everyone can afford premium, I use them to buy school stuff for my young students for motivation. Oliver Bonas is in a different league.
Also, no.7 and 17 products are owned by Boots and are even here in Sweden. Keilhs is American as can be, and their products are amazing.
You should try out Hannah Rickets , who goes shopping everywhere in London from Lidl to Harrods and finds the good in all retail, no matter the budget. A
I love how you just casually show a castle 😮 ❤
There's no many castles and palaces in the UK and Ireland, it's something we are used to seeing all the time.
@@Beebee192-j7i I can’t to visit there and see them 🥰
Target in the US carries some No. 7 products, but not the full line.
Kiehls is an American brand (started in NYC), so it's easy to find in the US.
As Guildford resident, our high street has reduced with shops shutting since COVID, and the new St Mary’s wharf development (which has been finally agreed!) will hopefully bring some much needed rejuvenation in the town as it’s a beautiful place - esp. with the castle grounds, cathedral, and many lovely areas around it.
Hi Sophie! Boots is similar to Ulta here in the US with Boots having additional medicines and pharmacy items that Ulta doesn't carry. Loved checking out the selection in Boots when we went to London last year! The No7 brand assortment is totally different here in the US and was floored by all the choices over there. Great video, depressing how Guildford stores have closed, we saw the same thing in Oxford when we went.
Boots is owned by Walgreens, a US drugstore chain. Some of the boots branded products are available in Walgreen stores. (I had to study Boots last year in my business course).
Thank you for this, Sophie! There is nothing i like more than a day out with you and David!
Im 84 seconds in & only clicked on the video as I was curious as to which high street in Surrey. Guildford is where I grew up (I used to work at Laura Ashley (early 90's) & Cafe Rouge (late 90's) in days gone by before & after uni, & both of those have gone now) & is currently only 15 miles from me. I haven't been into the centre for a while. House of Fraser has gone??? It was around for my whole life. How sad to see the High Street disappearing 😮
Edit: The Angel Gate is or was a beautiful establishment to stay at. I have NEVER seen the high street so quiet (I used to be there at all hours on all days) - it's dead 😪
David is so funny and FUN!
P,s I’m candle obsessed 😂 the hubby just smiles 😂😂😂😂
I liked this vlog a lot!!!!
I went on exchange at the University of Surrey there 10 years ago and wow does the high street look different. Had some really good times there!
Love the shopping videos with the two of you, the commentary is priceless. Yes, we do have Khiels in the US. I loved Boots when we have visited the UK, it was always fun to check out the different stuff. Loved seeing the castle and grounds, very interesting.
I feel u brought out a very important pt here .... In singapore too, many physical department stores have closes down.... I blame it on online shopping and i truly believe covid period was the start of the decline. I felt so sad when i walk past familiar places and saw most of my fav stores closed 😅😢
We have Kiehl’s in Australia. Our High Streets are not ideal but they are okay. So far! We had a Debenham’s here for a while. It failed. They chose the wrong location and the stock was mostly ordinary. Lovely cafe but it closed before the store. Sad! Thank you for the video.
I agree, the Debenhams cafe used to be amazing!!xx
Love these relaxed type of videos, Sophie :)
David was on great form in this vlog 😂. So sad to see Guildford in decline, it's been suffering for a few years now, but still very pretty at Christmas. I was desperate to see if the zip on the Jodie bag was the same! 🤣
I think most malls are pretty busy here in Miami
When it is deadly hot and humid as it is right now, shopping, dining and maybe catching a movie at the end of the day, also makes it appealing…
Then there is south beach, and the star attraction, ocean drive
Always busy
Just loved this video Sophie ❤
Loving this new channel, so much more relatable 😂❤
Hi Sophie and David, you guys are fun to go shopping and exploring with…also we have No 7 here in the US and Kiehls as well 😊
Boots Guildford has had all the new makeup brands for years now, way before HoF closed. I miss HoF so much! Guildford has become fancy bakeries and restaurants now. It’s so sad to shop there now. 😢
Yes, in fact we can get the wonderful No7 in the states. They are in our Walgreens. A very nice selection too❤
Brick and mortar stores are closing up everything, as most people shop online now. The stores are more like a display for the products, then people go home and place their order. Our local mall has lost multiple shops, but they seem to be bringing other options to pull people in. I haven’t personally been into our mall in 5 yrs.
At 3mins, is the shop Tiger? It's a great shop for random things like small scalp massager, or kids things like stationery, or house things like fridge magnet which is like a mini basket to hold notepad and pens
We all complain the high street is closing down as we shop online!
A lot of stores are closed in Connecticut USA Some malls are being torn down for condos. One mall added a bowling alley and a golf clinic but still a lot of empty spaces
Here in the states,Texas and Oklahoma, we are and have been for a long time, suffering with our malls. They are practically nonexistent. We have found that a lovely outdoor center that offers nice outdoor dining, coffees etc are doing much better than. Online is killing the “shopping” experience.😢
"That's rude" 😂😂 david
Yes # 7 is now available in the states.
I get No7 in the states but only online and shipping isn’t as fast. I love their exfoliating facial scrub.
Hi Sophie! Yes we have Kiel's and No7 in the states. 😎 Our Boots are called Walgreens though.
Love these videos! We do get No. 7 in the States, you can get it at target.
In Australia, Westfields (shopping mall) is still going because people like to socialise, and the malls are mainly filled with restaurants and big chain stores. The larger shopping centres are thriving, but the outside high streets are going vacant as people like to shop at a one-stop shop here in Australia. Plus, the big shopping malls put on entertainment and try to create an atmosphere to make shoppers more interested in coming back.
Hello dear Sophie 🙋♀️
The sandals were from "Doc Martens".That's why they were so expencive.Sophie, what was the name of the store where you can buy things that no one needs?😅
Have a very nice week.❤
Pretty sure it's 'Flying Tiger' 😊
No. 7 and Kiehl's are both available in the US at Target.
N umber 7 is available in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hi Sophie…unfortunately the death of the High st is happening in every country including here in Australia,so sad. Kiehls is an American company founded about 170 odd years ago ❤
It's really so sad, and I'm sorry to hear it's happening with you too :( The online world can be great, but it's also closing so many businesses out there on the high street :( xx
We have no 7 in our target stores in USA
So sad about Debenhams and house of Fraser 😢. Is David in witness protection? We never see his face 😂
You can see his face in the reflection of the window early in the window when she is showing House of Frazer
Lots of physical stores are closing in Australia.
And here I thought David was a classy kind of guy, but he’s sick of candles?! What?! 😂 Sophie, have you found a candle support group yet? I really need to join! 😅
You and me both! I'm candle mad!! Hugs xx
Yes malls as well
Target in the states carries No. 7. It was my grandmother’s favorite. We don’t have boots but we have that.
Khiels is basically at every decent department store now but I don’t think it’s that popular in the States. Their loss I love how they sell refills!
the American-isation of our shopping habits killed the high streets back mid 90's - I'm from N Kent and Lakeside and Blue Water decimated local towns high streets, that and the recession end of '80s. They never recovered. I think you have an opportunity to actually look more into this by diversifying the places you visit even more, if you are interested in how the UK shop.
Yes, we have Kiehl's in US. We do have No.7 but with limited selection.
It is our responsibility to buy in stores if we don't want them to close down.
Pretty castle 🏰 ❤
I wonder how often people buy that metal candle?
In defense of crocs they are the best garden shoe. Easy to wash off.
Sophie we have No7 at Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada.
I feel like stores don’t carry as much anymore because most of their inventory is online.
High street is the new Luxury... change my mind 😆
I bought a #7 product in Las Vegas
Yes we can get no 7
U guys are a super cute couple
So what's taken the place of the defunct shops? Is it like London with Turkish barbers and chicken shops everywhere?
Love Europe for tgat reason building that is still standing from centuries. And even if they get damage they restore it the way that it still look like the original❤
Here in the US our stip malls are closing shops.
We can get No 7 & Kiehls in the states
