Ben 10 was not inspired by Dial H. In my research for this video, I found interviews with Man of Action stating that they only heard of Dial H after they created Ben 10.

But I first heard about Dial H in the "making of" interveiws for Ben 10. While it could be true that they weren't directly inspired by them, the way I heard it Dial H was the original idea. I had no clue that Dial H was ever actually published.
Though, my memory could be a bit fuzzy considering it has been, what? Over 14 years since Ben 10 first aired.

(rumor I read once but don't know it is true but according to the letter columns of Adventure Comics, they were planning to do an animated series based on it, with viewers creating the heroes there also. And put it as a backup in Superboy to keep the property in the public eye and it was when that project was dead that they finally took it off Superboy.) Also while Harlan Ellison creating a villain (who's daughter appeared in later DC Comics as a new version of the character I believe) lesser known one of the heroes, Zeep the Living Sponge was created by Stephen DeStefano, who went on to become a writer and artist for several companies including DC and even brought a version of that character back in the DC mini-series Hero Hotline which he penciled.

The readers creating the heroes for Dial H For Hero was part of their run in Adventure Comics which ran for 11 issues, then after an appearance in DC Comics Presents teaming with Superman (where the readers created the heroes they dialed into in that issue) went on to be a backup feature in Superboy for just shy of 2 years. Interestingly the reader submissions were also used for the villains, along with the clothing the teen characters wore and in 1 issue they even designed the furniture one of the main characters got in their home. It was only for that version, not other versions which featured hero dialers Chris King and Vicki Grant, but the readers created all the heroes they changed into, and except for their arch enemy (who had a machine that created supervillains which like other villains in the series were created by heroes) the readers created all of the villains. It was a really fun idea and comic artist and writer Stephen DeStefano even had an enrty he sent in as a kid used during it's run as well as legendary Sci-Fi writers Harlan Ellison creating a villian for an issue, who although very famous even by that time DC claims sent the entry in on his own... who knows if that is true likely the truth of that one is lost to time.

One thing I was dissapointed in, is although I get this wasn't a user by user history of the Dials, you completely skipped the run in Adventure Comics, one of the longest runs in terms of issues used if you count their time as backup on Superboy. You did mention the Chris King changing without being able to control it, that happened later on with that character but wish you had used some artwork from it. Not to mention Vicky Grant was one of the few female Hero Dialers (and easily the one with the longest tenure) and tied into both Hero Crus dial and Chris King's storyline. Again, just a nitpick since that was my favorite Dial H For Hero run. You did a good job with the video. Really enjoyed it.

I haven't read all the comments, butt dial H for hero was originally created as a way for Comic fans to interact with the comics themselves. Every month DC allowed anyone to submit a drawing of a hero and a description of their powers, and then entries chosen at random would be put into the stories. I spent countless hours thinking up Heroes and sending them in to DC, almost a hundred in total. Good Times...

I loved the New 52 Dial H series and I really like the new Dial H comic. I hope this series gets popular enough to be mainstream, mainly because the whole concept is fun as hell. I know Ben 10 already capitalized on the whole ''turn into a random hero'' gimmick, but I'd love to see DC make a show or cartoon about Dial H.

DC's Dials. Interesting. Don't know why I'm just now hearing about this crazy set of artifacts. These seem pretty cool.

I kinda want to see it be that you can dial up a hero, and you can get a specific one by dialing in the number.
Example, if someone turned into a random hero they can remember a set of numbers, which can be used to dial up that same hero and it only works on the last hero you were. I know the thing is random but it be a cool way to see favorite ones.

I don't think it was ever said, but I'm sure Ben 10 was originally an adaptation of H-Dial. The cartoon was originally going to be about a kid who transformed into ten different super-heroes, rather than ten different alien heroes.

This is quite amazing, but I find the consistency the Omnitrix allows for transformations (for the most part when it's not the prototype or due to user error) so you can repeat a selection instead of getting a random one you may never see again make it superior to the dial in my mind.

Dac Dac Ah. I see. When you look at it that way I think that's quite a clever way to make such a concept fun and interesting.

DC comics presents No. 44, April cover date in 1982: Chris King dialed horror and became an orange monster with green head, neck .and wings. However inside issue had green head no neck and gray body and wings.

This would be the best tv show out of any dc property, they could go dystopian and make it fucked up. Diffferent person with the dial every episode.

So it’s kinda like a class card from fate in some ways, you get copies of the powers but if your not careful you may lose yourself to the servant your using the powers of.

In my youth I read the Chris King Victoria Grant Dial H for Hero stories and wasn't aware until later that Robbie Reed predated them. When I read it, the superheroes came from fans. You could submit yours by mail and (big maybe) see them appear in a future issue. This went on for awhile, but I got the feeling the writer felt frustrated at having to limit stories to characters submitted by readers. They weren't exactly always winners, but I found that to be part of the fun. Also Carmine Infantino was the artist for much of that run and his frenetic style was just glorious to me at the time. Seemed like his pencils were a rush job, but that gave the pages an energy that was thrilling even when the stories themselves were sometimes lackluster. Then some years later I was reading New Teen Titans and Chris King showed up saying Victoria Grant had gone insane. The ending for that was disappointing and I assumed that was just how DC decided to put Dial H For Hero to bed. Didn't realize they were wanting to completely reboot and retool the idea. This video does not encourage me to go down that rabbit hole any further. The H Dial had training wheels on it when I was a kid. Now it sounds more like a device designed by insensitive or downright malevolent aliens pranking humans with their own avarice and corruption.
I remember when I read that Wolfman Infantino series in Adventure Comics, thinking some of the characters briefly used might have been fun in their own series. Sounds like these more recent incarnations the writer designs the heroes the characters turn into, which kinda takes the wind out of the sails of this franchise for me. "All good things.." I suppose.
