    Profile of the Speaker:
    Prof. K. Ramasubramanian is a Professor at IIT Bombay in the Cell for Indian Science and Technology in Sanskrit, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Ramasubramanian holds a doctorate in Theoretical Physics, a Bachelors in Engineering, and a Masters in Sanskrit. He is one of the authors who prepared detailed Explanatory Notes of the celebrated works Ganita-Yuktibhasha (Rationales in Mathematical Astronomy) and Tantrasangraha which brings out the seminal contributions of the Kerala School of astronomers and mathematicians in the field of Mathematics and Astronomy published by Springer U.S. and Hindustan Book Agency, New Delhi.
    Besides this, he has edited other works in Indian Astronomy and Mathematics, as well as authored several research papers, both individually and jointly with others. In 2008, he was conferred the prestigious award of Maharshi Badarayan Vyas Samman by the President of India in recognition of his scholarship as well as the outstanding research work done by him to the process of synergy between modernity and tradition. In 2010, the National Academy of Sciences India honoured him by conferring upon him the R. C. Gupta Endowment Lecture Award. He got elected as a Council member of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology in the year 2013. He was a Member of the Second Sanskrit Commission formed by the MHRD, Government of India, in the year 2014, and is a Member of the Central Sanskrit Board formed in 2015.
    His research work primarily focused on trying to bring out the major contribution made by Kerala astronomers and mathematicians between 14th and 16th centuries referred to as the Golden Age of Indian Mathematics.
    This lecture was delivered on 28th February 2019 at CLT, IIT Madras.

    Look- I am a traditional performing artist- but I was a computer science student first. However, Once I flipped some pages of our traditional wisdom texts only- I found that the pedagogy, the methodology and approach dramatically differs. And… I this difference in approach is what I think we may require hence forth to make original discoveries and inventions in technology such that we wouldn’t hurt the ecology and environment.
    Traditions also teaches how to reinvent wisely.

    Can't say for sure. As you know many original manuscripts are burned when nalanda University was burned down. In morden times, many original manuscripts are in foreign universities and we do not any access to them!

      Not quite. He said his point is that ancient Indian mathematics was rich and well developed and that he wished to make people aware of this: that us indigenous Indians have been extremely proficient in mathematics. But I agree with the question asker in that, an example of an Indian mathematical achievements would serve the speakers argument very well. I personally have no such golden example in hand (although you could search contributions of Indian Mathematicians online and easily come out very impressed). But I have such an example in Computer Science, a subfield of maths. The Bharatiya Maharishi Panini, made extremely crucial ideas 2000 years ago that Western computer scientists only reached upon 50 years ago. This extreme contrasts speaks to the proficiency of ancient Indian scholars.

      @@VedantFalcon Solution to quadratic equations by Bhramagupta. Sum of squared numbers series by Aryabhatta. Not to mention advanced astronomy calculations for thousands of years which are not possible without knowing trigonometry, elliptical equations and radical numbers such as square root of 2 and so on.
