After two years of wasting time on language gaming apps, I’m sticking almost entirely to audio courses. Unfortunately, the audio course I’m following - Rocket Languages - doesn’t have Swedish - but there’s always the more dated/more repetitive Pimsleur 🤖).
I’ve realised that key to speedy progress in language learning is understanding of the spoken form (those pesky linguists seem to have been right after all). My most successful method to date is basically comprehensible input with a huge emphasis on listening comprehension - hence the audio course.
With understanding, we can expose ourselves to more and more of the language, and acquire it phrase by phrase in the way nature intended, in a similar way to how kids acquire language.
I think linguists make a good point: The written form is a poor guide to pronunciation - partly due to the nature of the all important connected speech, as well as, of course, intonation.
The gaming language apps are not as immersive, with little authentic audio. They’re not much better than classroom learning where each grammar point is turned laboriously into nothing more than a math problem. That’s antithetical to how the brain processes language.
Understanding the new spoken language without much mathematical effort is also hugely motivating. I haven’t put the audio course down all year - and that’s even with the many repetitions.
It’s so motivating that the language I’m currently learning is one I never had any interest or intention of learning because of its pesky complexities, and you alluded to it in your vid:
    F.R.E.N.C.H. 😱🇫🇷🥖
Now there’s a language we should hear before we see it written 😵‍💫
How about you? Which other languages do you speak, and which method(s) are you using to learn Swedish?

Firstly - tack så mycket - thank you so much for the well articulated comment, I fully appreciate it!
I personally had to study French in Switzerland, as this is one of the four official languages in our country and thus we spent 12 years learning it. I attained a B2 business French level, but haven't used it in about 2 years almost now. And even then at my "peak of speaking French" I was never fully fluent or confident in speaking it, even after 12 years. The main application or method that was used upon us was grammar, reading and lots of nonsense theory that was not helpful for us at all. It's like explaining how a guitar works but never actually being able to play it. That's why putting yourself in the corner where you are required to speak it is one of the best methods for me. Now granted, another challenge I have is that as someone who lives in Switzerland, I don't have the luxury of speaking Swedish to everyone, which means I have to create my own little hub at home or in my personal field. That means putting your phone and computer settings into Swedish, trying to think in Swedish, listening to loads and loads of podcasts in Swedish (as you mentioned it nicely) and so forth. This means that we aren't necessarily obliged to live in the country we are trying to learn the language of, but it certainly helps.
I'll be making some content on how I learn Swedish and some of the methodology as well, and partly to also just show you guys how I advance in that language authentically. 😄

      Hej @@philosophiahelvetica !
So you have the same problem that Albert Einstein had. Didn’t he fail to get into the prestigious Zurich Institute of Technology because he flunked his French entrance exam? 👨‍🎨😅
Well there you have it. Clearly your struggles wiz zee Fronch laungage are a sign of high intellect 🧠😅

I will certainly check out your other vids. There seems to be some attraction among philosophers towards languages and linguistics. Why do you think that is?
For instance, Majestic Minds is another philosophy/language learning channel set in Denmark.

You could perhaps do a podcast with them one day. In fact, this is what the internets demand 😎

Hej! I don't know if you can see my reply as it contained links to other YT videos, which seems to have broken some trap door of an internet law... I tried reposting with the links removed, but that hasn't appeared either :/
