- Two very simple ways to improve reception. Not as much gain as a colinear but much faster to make.
Everybody is talking ADS-B, even DJI are including Ping receivers in the new Matrice platform. It's cheap and simple to find out about ADS-B thanks to USB TV tuners.
We will be using the cut DVB-T antenna in the next more relevant drone ADS-B project.

Whaaaaw!! The place you live ... is gorgeous!!!
Natal in South Africa. Easily the second most beautiful place in SA. South Coast takes the cake though ;)
Can you please explain how to do a coverage splat please.
Very interesting. That little antenna is picking up signals from 60 miles away? What's the power of the sending transmissions then? Thanks in advance.
I'm gonna try building a modified horseshoe to get side lobes, poor back (hill side)
Hi, i am going to install ADS-B 1090MHZ antenna in my top of roof above 30 feet from ground level. Is there any problem with lightning strike. Is there anyone's antenna affected by lightning. Please help me with that. Thank you
I've been asking on ADSB forums if anyone has tried a slim jim, to me it seemed obvious with the low radiation angle
Yes, that's what I thought as well! I need to make another one. Now I am using 6 element commercial collinears as I can make smarter looking installations when it's not at my house!
Had to laugh at your construction technique but, must say, it is effective. I have been a ham for a bunch of years and agree with your repeating that "we are not transmitting, else would take more care". Interesting technique with the plastic and tin foil ground plane. Thanks for the education and a laugh.
It was partly to show that doing something is better than nothing! My collegue Vic is horrified with this video his antennas are works of art.
You are correct. Those little stubbies that come with the SDR chips are good for 50 miles on a good day, down wind, but that's about all. Much better to hang up something... ANYTHING!! Good job. I just built a second 12-segment co-linear. I went with 114mm and it is so horizon heavy that I don't like it. Back to 110 next time. Works great far out. Overhead I am deaf! Funny how reception works. You cuts an antenna and you takes your chances. Mike/W6XXX
Was it really worth the effort of going to 12 elements? I thought over 7 made little difference. My mind is coming round to thinking with ADS-B it's easier to place another Raspberry Pi at a friends house and tie the signals together on Virtual Radar Server. Each one should have a great antenna though ;-)
Does the ground plane need to be that small? Am I doing it wrong by using a 32cm pizza tray?
No not at all it just keeps it tidy if smaller
Sir, how did you do that red range grafik? Thank you!
Using virtual radar server, its very straight forward
You need to find a girlfriend
Fair point well made, I will tell the wife, I am sure she will be delighted.
