How to Draw a Realistic Eye With a Ballpoint Pen

Materials Used:
Blue BIC ballpoint pen
Koh i noor clutch pencil (HB lead)
Faber Castell putty rubber
Some toilette paper... any brand will do

i’m a professional portrait artist. Usually photo/hyper realism. You give some very good tips here. Like not being afraid of using a reference. EVERYONE uses references. Our brains are built to discern even the slightest deviations from normal proportions. That’s how we read facial expression. Even if you can’t tell exactly WHATs wrong, you can tell. Only way to avoid that is to use a reference. it’s not cheating at all, unless your reference is someone else’s work.
Advanced level tip to add some WTF, light light the upper lashes and eyebrows. MEANING, After your pencil is done, come back with a pointed but blunt object and drag it along where the hairs will be, leaving a divot in the paper- a depression. When later you draw the pen tip over that divot it will be left white. Just come back with a hard black line opposite your light source and it’ll look like light glinting off the hair.

you could spend $100 on a fancy ballpoint from an art company. Or you could use a BIC medium point. BIC works better. only exception is if you really need to end result to be black, and you don’t want the blue tint. Then you need a pen wihh to mow expensive ink.

Hi Benjamin, what a beautiful eye. I always think that just using a ball pen is difficult, but you make it look easy. (In a good way). I would love it if you could show you drawing at normal speed for at least 20 sec. That way I can get a better idea of your strokes. Thnx for sharing and keep up the good work!

We missed your tutorial
I've been drawing since I can remember.... My whole life and my best drawings aren't even close to this and very time consuming..... I'm a better than average artist but I see work like this and feel like I suck... Finding the time and patience are the hardest parts for me so I gotta ask, how long did this take?... For me to draw something that size and to my best ability, at least an hour.... That's probably under estimating my time also...

I'm an artist and using pen as a medium is harder than what a you think. If you made a mistake, you can't erase it.
