I am probably one of the last people still above ground that saw their act on stage. 1952 the Hippodrome theater, Brighton, Sussex, England. I was all of 9 years old. Loved them ever since.

I find it insane that with the lack of technology at the time they redid their shorts in different languages, even going the extra mile to learn them fluently so viewers could understand better. That level of vision and dedication is admirable.
Imagine redoing everything after all the takes during the original...plus remembering a whole other language and those takes...for what a couple dollars?
@@sabinfigaro7334 At least they were one of the few, if not the only ones, on the industry at the time to be aware of their international audience. Which is pretty neat.
It showed they cared about everybody who enjoyed their work.
@@mafeuk Buster Keaton did the same thing, and wanted to go further for one film to act on the advice of a French colleague to rewrite the dialogue to better suit French culture. However, the studio executive bluntly overruled him and he had to soldier on with the original dialogue translated.
Shows how much they appreciated their fans, they would have people behind the camera with cards, saying for example, grass C ass, must have been difficult to film that way but Stan and ollie really cared about their fans, they could have had some bad dubbing but they chose not to.
Such a nice and polite comment section, brings a tear to the eye

A message I'm getting between this and your ongoing series on the Three Stooges was that even the lower-tier studios could be just as tyrannical to their talents as the big ones back in the Studio Era/Golden Age

Yeah, it's called, "grease paint," and "pancake makeup." LOL
Stan and Ollie is one of my fav biographical movies based. And it's based on the greatest duo ever. It's a shame they never got to be as big as Abbott and Castello(who i also adore). After seeing the afformentioned film. Their famous dance at the end hits in a different way now. That's the first image i'd like to when i pass on. To be sure i've entered heaven. RIP to the paradise of Comedy. Laurel and Hardy.
As a life long fan of Laurel and Hardy I must admit I was underwhelmed by the Stan and Ollie movie. It seemed to be just such a long drawn out downer with only a couple keynotes and although I understand what they were going for I can't help but keep waiting for an actual tribute documentary film that's as witty and lighthearted yet brutally honest and violent as the boys. Maybe I just expect too much lol 🤣 I have mad respect for John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan for going for it balls deep with the characters, however I feel that overall it was a lackluster gem that could have been a diamond.

@@Jahno71 thank you. As a life long fan who was duped into buying this movie on CZcams I always feel ripped off when I see the thumbnail in my purchased video section. This film is the ONLY one I bought I sincerely wish I could get a refund for, and I say that as A huge Kevin Smith fan who also bought clerks 3 and watched it once and wanted to throw my phone because it's a repeat of the jay and silent bob reboot mixed with newer anecdotes from Kevin's heart attack that everyone would know way before they saw the flick if they listened to any of his interviews or podcasts ever. Not only did they do Stan Laurel dirty by making him look like a lying POS but they failed to embrace the relationship between the two. They WERE Not best friends and whenever Babe wasn't filming he was at the track or a golf course. THIS movie made Stan look like a shady, sheisty, selfish sociopath when really he was just fighting the studio execs to pay them fairly.. not only did Ollie know the score when they went on the European tour but he desperately needed the cash to pay off his bookies and gambling debts. I'd like to give Ireland a shout out for playing their famous Cuckoo theme song on all their church bells when the boys arrived. RIP babe and Stan
@@EmilyKresl Nice words I love your enthusiasm for L&H. Spot on about the film it was based on a big lie Most L&H fans knew Stan encouraged Oliver to do the Elephant film. For me the film could've used the break up of their marriages especially Oliver with a alcoholic wife.The breakthrough from silent into sound films. The bust ups between Stan and Hal Roach over contracts and film continuity There fall from fame in the 1940s after they left Hal Roach studios There health and the dreaded Atol K film . These two are making people laugh for nearly 100 years later its ridiculous that they were broke in the 1950s

Hats Off to Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy one of the greatest comedy teams of all time. L&H is silent films or sound films and in any language were/are truly magnificent!

Laurel and Hardy and The Three Stooges helped shape my overall sense of humor as a kid. Even in the 80's, they were on quite a bit on various cable stations. I've long held that Stan Laurel was the most singularly talented comedian of his day. And oh man, NOBODY gave a stink eye or did a double take like James Finlayson.
You are doing a great job dude , introducing a whole new generation to these legendary entertainers. CZcams recommended me your Leslie Nelson video and since then I am hooked . ( you made a dumb gen z 16 year old be interested in these classic gems and admire these legendary entertainers)
I can’t tell you how thankful to you I am for these. They opened my eye to a new corner of film entertainment.
Fun fact: Joe Finlayson was partially the inspiration for Homer Simpson's "D'oh!" because in a lot of these shorts, he'd say "D-ooohhhh!" as a way to self-censor himself from saying "Damn!" in a Hayes Code era film. When they did the original Simpsons shorts on The Tracy Ullman Show, Dan Castelenetta imitated Finlayson's "D-ooooohh!" when the script called for him to make an "annoyed grunt," but had to shorten it because it would've taken up too much of the short's minuscule running time, hence the truncated "D'oh!"

Great video! I can't appreciate enough how well these are put together, and I'm certainly thankful to have been exposed to a couple of these older acts I somehow missed.
Also just realized this is the second video in two days. I enjoyed the Honeymooners video as well!
I love The Boys, and seeing their evolution through your videos is fascinating and fun. When I was a little kid our family lived in Germany for a couple of years and my sister and I used to read comic books called "Dick und Doof" which was Laurel & Hardy misadventures, and we'd occasionally watch their shenanigans on TV. From first sight, I fell in love with their brilliant comedy antics. Stan and Ollie made it look so very effortless.
I tend to avoid the feature films that they made which contained lots of songs by other people; I just wanted L&H all to myself, lol. Same with Abbott and Costello; they kept peppering many of their movies with musical numbers or songs, bringing the story to a brisk halt (by The Andrews Sisters or someone else). To this day I prefer A+C films without songs-- like Who Done It, or The Time of Their Lives, or the Frankenstein one. To each his own.

your channel popped up with a jim varney video on my feed, who i love, which led to the laurel and hardy/abbot and costello and fatty arbuckle, who i was familiar with. But your videos gave me a new found respect and love for them, especially after hearing your love from jon candy to bushwacked.
That's probably how I came across as well...or it was Steve Martin...either way I'm glad!

Great video. I grew up watching my dads laurel and hardy videos, and used to watch them all the time with my gran. i still love them today, they are a big part of our lives. They are true icons imo. Im a massive marx brothers fan too, id love to see you do a video series on them :)
Great video. Nice to see some appreciation towards the duo that taught me how to laugh. Not enough is said about these fellas and their movies and shorts today.
Could you do a forgotten failure or almost cult classic on a musical film or musical remake of a film like The Producers 2005
I've learned so much from this series. I had no idea they did the translations themselves. I grew up with a tape of a few of their shorts and Babes in Toyland. I haven't watched those particular ones in years. It will be fun to revisit them.

My father in law always has to watch “babes in toyland” the Friday after thanksgiving since the broadcast channels would traditionally air it following the thanksgiving parade. The broadcast channels won’t show it anymore so we switched to streaming.
I saw all your videos in a couple of days and now I’m dying for my next fix. Can’t complement this channel enough.

Just wanted to mention that 1938's, "Blockheads", which you detailed in the video, was a remake of Laurel and Hardy's first sound film, 1929's, "Unaccustomed As We Are", just fleshed out to feature length.

I love a lot of the comedy of their era, but Laurel & Hardy were on another level. To this day their stuff can make me nearly fall out of my seat laughing. Even their weaker ones like Utopia (not that that movie's problems were at all their fault) had multiple scenes that I quote or reference often.

All your videos are great, but I really love the way you talk about Laurel and Hardy and other early greats. I have a lot of fond memories of watching Stan and Ollie or the 3 Stooges on Sunday mornings back in B.C. days (Basic Cable) with my dad.
Looking forward to a future (almost) classic on “Midnight Madness” (1980).

For the algorithm. Excellent work.
Since my parents had them on VHS in the 80s, I grew up watching "Sons of the Desert," "Way Out West," "Flying Deuces," and the re-christened "March of the Wooden Soldiers" (the name that actually appeared on the box and in the opening title of movie.) It's funny that although Stan & Oliver made their movie first, it seems that after another adaptation of "Babes in Toyland" starring Annette Funicello was made in 1961, Laurel & Hardy's version has since been identified and titled as "March of the Wooden Soldiers."
One other, perhaps a bit nit-picky, thing I'd like to address is the statement of "no romantic sub-plot or elaborate musical numbers" for the movie "Sons of the Desert." I suppose since the boys were depicted as already married then "romantic" sub-plot is an accurate description, (lol,) however there is a musical number in the film, that being for the song "Honolulu Baby" which is almost the film's theme song, (the song is played at the close and end credits of the film.) I suppose it depends on the perspective of what is an "elaborate" musical number. The song is performed by another performer, who is not Stan or Ollie, with a compliment of dancers performing an elaborate dance sequence to accompany the presentation of the song. The song then becomes the "go-to" song for Ollie and Stanley to sing after returning home from the convention.
Anyway, I do appreciate these videos from "Hats Off Entertainment," they are very entertaining to watch and learn about aspects of this great comedy duo that I may not have known about before.
My introduction to Laurel and Hardy was through their later features, Atoll K, The Big Noise, etc. and while I found them kind of amusing as a kid, these movies had me write them off as an adult. It wasn't until I saw their short films that I really got just how funny they were. It also sort of soured me on the later films even more, because the reuse of jokes and lack of energy in the later material just comes off as going through the motions, it's kind of pitiful in a way. A lot of acts reused material endlessly of course, in the pre-TV rerun era, but with Laurel and Hardy, they really just look tired and over it by the start of the 1940s.

Their Italian dubbing was so successful that when L&H couldn't dub themselves anymore, the Italian voice actors hired to replace them (among those, screen legend Alberto Sordi) kept the original "wrong" pronunciation - weird sounds, misplaced accents and all - for comedic effect

Perfect Strangers was my jams in kindergarten. Lol 😂 I used to watch that show every day at lunchtime before school, and I seriously believed Balki was my best friend. It freaked me out seeing him be a jerk in the Langoliers lol 🤣

Hats Off Entertainment Cheech Marin quotes a line from the saps at sea in him and Tommy Chong's film debut "Up in Smoke" (1978) in the scene where Chong accidentally gives him LSD and they get confronted by the police and they ask him to roll down his window and say's "Weight the anchor ! How much did it weigh ? I don't know I forgot ! You forgot ?! (Laughing) I heard that in a movie once !" That being said I haven't seen the saps at sea one, but I know this because Cheech mentions he was quoting that film on the up in smoke audio commentary track.

In the previous edition, he stated they had enough material to fill 2 features films which is still technically true I suppose if each film was around 45 minutes.
Good, succinct and to-the-point. They really did their best work with Hal Roach (apart from the musical longs such as Fra Diavolo, Swiss Miss etc. Some of the longer Hal Roach films were, as stated, comedy sketches loosely tied together with some vague plot, but they worked well. Hal Roach does turn out to be not the most benign figure. Roach, when very old, was interviewed by Jonathan Ross on Channel 4 in the UK... He was treated too much like a venerable icon and he exploited Laurel & Hardy - they didn't get repeat fees from the frequent showings of their shorts on TV from the 1950s onwards.

I remember seeing a colorized version of Babes in Toyland with Laurel and Hardy as a kid, and didn't Ollie end up giving his bowler hat to Stymie of The Little Rascals? Hal Roach sure liked to reuse music too because he used it for Little Rascal shorts as well.
