Had a chance to see Pandit Shiv Kumar ji perform live during inaugural ceremony of Mood Indigo at the Convocation Hall of IIT Bombay. That evening he was accompanied on Tabla by Ustad Zakir Hussain.
Corresponding CARNATIC Raagam is Hindolam janyam of Melakarta Number 20 Nata bhairavi. Malkouns is a janyam of 5th Bhairavi THAAT தாட் ताट। Excellent performance of Pundit Shiv Kumar Sharma ji. It takes us to a different world like Vaikunt. Sai RAM
As per saying, Malkauns is created by Goddess Parvati to calm Lord Shiva down off his Tandava. So, the hour of this Raga is at the tritiyo prahar (from 12 am to 3 am), after midnight, at the quiet of the night! Such a calm & beautiful raga!! Pandit ji 🙏

This is the best rendition of Malkauns by Pt shivkumar sharma. One really needs to hear the original LP on a good sond system (I had purchased LP in 1976 but got misplaced). It is accompanied by an equally soulful Tabla by Pt Samta praasad- known as Gudai Maharaj . It is almost celestial. Gudai Maharaj was a legend . Somehow recent history has been unkind to him & his name is not famous So delighted to find this recording after nearly three decades 👍👌

I learnt to play this with my santoor by listening to it 25-30 times so that i play in tilwada with electronic tabla
