The truth is that French is essentially incomprehensible when spoken quickly, even to natives. Natives rely on memorizing conversation patterns, verbal and non-verbal cues to communicate, almost never understanding singular words rather processing the "flow" of the sentence. So if someone needs the conversation to be slowed down then you shouldn't try to gaslight them into thinking that they're doing something wrong. Similarly when having a conversation in real life you can ask people to repeat and slow down.
