Hey SaltEMike, i enjoy your content a lot. Reason why:
    1. You're 100% authentic
    2. you care about the SC project a lot
If you would leave SC...i truly think that would be a disaster for this community, probably even for the development of the game. Im sure you disagree but im very convinced.

hes definitely more negative than positive, not that I blame him, but he ignores the complexity of what they're doing with a team size that is definitely much smaller than it should be even today. They should have roughly 3x the amount of people and that's for triple A games, of which we all know most recently haven't been all that great 2000+ people is pretty normal, even eve has over 2000 total devs, working on various systems, though granted they've been around over 20 years now rather than a bit over a decacde.

As for this episode, holy shit, honestly, Jared could have just made a video yapping about stuff, while this dev sat at his desk doing actual dev work. This is one of those episodes where they should have had a second dev of another discipline yet familiar with what's going on on screen, sit beside the work-focusing one, explaining what's going on and keeping the conversation up with Jared.
Ironically, the next episode does a much better job of exploring ways to make levels more interesting, to me that's: Removing a grate from a vent either by ripping it off or cutting it with a multi-tool, hacking open a door or two, moving the landscape with a button to provide new avenues of movement and cover, etc.

You've also never played a multiplayer game that has so many things for servers to persist, calculate etc.
You could argue that it's dumb to try and build that, but you can't really argue that they can just use what other games use.

    • @Ogata123
      @Ogata123 Před měsícem +6

because most multiplayer games are designed by people who clean up their code. When the servers hold more than 100 people, they’ll have an excuse for how poorly things operate. When things actually persist instead of being a 50/50 despawn for some things, and an existentialist, cease to exist when you leave the room for other things, they’ll have an excuse. When there isn’t hard entity limits that are noticable by every salvager, they’ll have an excuse. For now, they are running massive amounts of data through the servers because of their incompetence, despite putting limits on the things that in theory should be causing the high data flow. Its the Diablo 4 inventory problem, but game wide.

Twelve years and almost a billion dollars later and it is still just a glorified science project. I have serious doubts as to whether they could ever make a full, smooth running game that is enjoyable to play on a consistent basis.

A FOB (Foward Operation/s Base) is a base/camp that is set up in conflict or non-conflict zones that can be near lined boarders that they can gain quick access to another said territory. In non-conflict times the U.S. Marines have a base/camp in South Korea that is a type of FOB and when Marines are stationed their we lived in tents for our duration, we were armed and always trained and when we rotated out we left the tents. The base was created for quick action with a Marine force if North Korea started with the South. I got rotated to that FOB for a period of time and after the time was up they rotated us out, and the process will continue until South Korea askes for the FOB to be removed.

Their intentions have always been honest and true?
In 2019, Chris Roberts said that 4.0 and Pyro would be released in 2020. We then discovered in Q4 of last year that they hadn’t even finished building Pyro or the jump gates yet.
So, if CR’s intentions were true and he was being honest, despite knowing that Pyro hadn’t even been built yet, nor the gates or server meshing, that leads to only one possible conclusion. They are completely inept.
They are a bit more manipulative than you realize. There’s zero chance they honestly believed that 4.0 would be released in 2020 back in 2019.

Perhaps you haven't fully understood the criticism of the roadmap. Many people are not interested in knowing when something will be ready, but rather what is being worked on and what is no longer being worked on, even though it has been announced and why features are being postponed.
Examples: Passenger transportation and Bounty Hunter T2. For many, it would be perfectly OK to wait longer for the Spirit E1 or the Zeus MR with its gameplay if CIG were more transparent about it.
In one of the last SCLs, Jared even said in a subordinate clause that the Zeus MR is coming later because Bounty Hunter T2 still needs preparation, such as reputation and law system, and they won't say anything else about it until then. He doesn't realize that a lot of people are concerned with exactly this information.
Another example: medical gameplay. In 2023, the Apollo was in the whitebox and development was paused, and with it medical gameplay T2. Why is there a roadmap roundup if such information is not mentioned there?

Hey man. I usually just watch my videos and take off on YT but I wanted to throw in my appreciation for your work. I've watched Spacetomato, Supermacbro, and a couple others but I prefer your content involving Star Citizen because you point out the good AND the bad. Most others just praise CIG in every video and I'm left wondering, why? What is there to praise right now? I haven't been in SC for very long so I may not have the whole scope of 'what was' to 'what is' as many backers. But 12 years and over 700mil I feel that we should have WAY more than what we currently have. and anytime I bring that up, I get the "It'S An AlpHa BrO!" thrown at me. as if, having or wanting higher standards than what we have after 12 years and 700mil is a bad thing.
I never knew about SC until I happened upon the 'War for Jumptown' video by bedbanana and I thought: "Wow now THIS is a game I could really get into". and the more I learned, I thought, if they can get everything they have planned for this game to work smoothly, I won't have to play any other game ever, this will have it all! I joined when 3.18 went live. To say I was disappointed was an understatement. Couldn't go more than 5 minutes without a 30k. 3.19 went out and loved it. played with a lot awesome people and mulicrew. 3.20-3.23 has been back to disappointment. fix 1 thing and 5 more things broke with each update to a point that I and all the people I played with haven't bothered even playing 3.20-3.23. I would join in after a patch to test things and see what works, what doesn't, what changes, then let my discord know. The people I met and played with in 3.19 have not been back into SC because there is no reason. No point. The gameplay is not there. Progression is not there. Reputation, "rewards"...
Anyways, before I ramble on too long. When my little discord asks me about the progress of SC and if we all should group up and get back into it, while it has so far been answered "No, not yet", I usually share your videos about progress because you point out the good AND the bad, where as others only point out the good, then people get in game, are disappointed, and quit again. So, again, we appreciate your work, man!

The problem with looking for the next best idea all the time and not maintaining your design docs is that it has a cascading effect at some point invalidating other work/designs. I mean this is not something new or specific to game dev. It's universal. Imo CIG is way to comfortable staying in their endless dev cycle. Iteration is ok, but not completely revamping systems and sub systems all the time that impact other systems/sub-systems. Make up your mind and stick with it.
This game has pretended to be everything under the sun already. Its all over the place. And the marketing/management should be clearly held accountable for this failure. It simply can't be everything, its impossible. The sooner CIG figures that out the better. From the outside looking in they seem to be daydreaming in their endless re-invention of the wheel for their tech demo.
When I hear the devs talking about the 'grind' I honestly feel they have no clue what makes a grind or at least the goal of it; enjoyable and fun. I really miss someone that clearly understands what makes an MMO an MMO. I would love to be proven wrong as I put quite a bit of money in this; but right now they seem to clearly lack a vision for their 'MMO'. It's all making pew pew more arcady and convenient while making everything else a time sink. Like who designs this?

Only problem is that, because my imagination saw a path, it may not be "the best" or exactly the same as someone else's... Which is actually the exact reason why I questioned at points and am not satisfied with the "fun" argument used at points.
What my idea of fun is may not be what another's is, or vice versa. That's not where the issue lays. The actual issue is when one person's "fun" takes a priority over another person's.
We are dealing with a development of a game that has a potential to be something like no one has ever thought possible. Something that really could be fun for just about anyone regardless of what they think fun in a video game is. It's just how to go about it...

Think it is time for you Mike, to go SALTY DEFCON 4!!!!
Staying salty over this techdemo going on for 12 years now, is also tough, cause one gets dry out, cause CIG work ethics and promises have not changed over all those years! They create a hype, people jump on the hype train, and time after time, shit happens! At the end after being, and trying to stay positive, one becomes, frustrated, then salty, and one ends up becoming numb and loose interest for the game! for me right now, the tech demo, is more or less turning into one long time, sink, bad flight model, new bugs on top of old ones. I have stopped playing, and now just watch vids from you Mike and a couple of other guys that are not afraid speaking their minds, both the positive and the negative things.....all though it is difficult, at least for me to find anything positive, especially with the 3.24 patch coming! I know I am at risk at getting the usual, white knight answers " well then this game is not for you", well that was not the original idea about the way, CIG described the game, or lets say CR did.....
Anyhow! Mike YOu just do your stuff, and stay the way you are, and F**** everybody's BS comments....even mine! Stay SALTY!!

This is why I roll my eyes every time someone says combat focused areas. They aren't talking about implementing a combat system they've developed they are talking about spending hours crawling over the model doing reviews to make it a valorant map. Such a waste of time. They should have like you say a tool or system they work to, not a individual review of box placement.

Star Citizen has become a cautionary tale of excessive ambition without accountability. With its ever-expanding scope, constant delays, and lack of a clear roadmap, the project feels more like a never-ending fundraising campaign than a coherent game development. The vast promises overshadow the actual delivered content, leaving many to question if it will ever reach a finished state, or if it’s simply designed to perpetually generate hype and funding.

There’s a famous saying “Look for the third best thing. The second best arrives too late, and the very best never arrives at all.” I think this perfectly sums up SC. CIG is trying to invent far too many new systems. The insane genre-redefining game Chris promised us is just far too complex to bring to reality. Even if CIG does eventually manage to get a 1.0 version of this game across the line that absolutely blows Starfield, Elite, NMS, etc. out of the water…it will be like 5-10 years from now and I will have long moved on from space games in general.

Usually I sit back and watch but Mrs. Tomato made more of a general statement cause something like that is understandably frustrating, Most SC CZcamsrs are on the smaller ends of channels so they intersect their viewership so yes reacting in the same community is very harmful to the reactees, however mikes content does provide a good balance of what a lot of sc CZcamsrs don’t do which is call out the good and the bad, it may skew more negative but no one can say he is not outspoken about positives because overall the game just takes too long to release things in a timely fashion, even though I’m positive every developer at CIG works hard, I literally just don’t pay attention to the game during stints like this and just watch content because I’m content on waiting to see if this game will be finished one day, all that said, people need to be more understanding about how all sides have a valid reason to be a little upset at one another even folks like Jared and co because no one wants something that they put their heart, soul, and time into to be shitted on by people who know nothing of the craft and the complexities of creating art, and probably haven’t created anything of the sort ever in their life
