In my opinion, Holes is the most underrated film Disney ever made. I loved it as a kid when it 1st came out & still enjoy it today. Instead of live action remakes of animated films, Disney should adapt more books middle & high school students read into films like they did with Holes.
Don't know if you know but Madame Zeroni is Eartha Kit AKA Catwoman from the live action Batman series
the lizards were painted not cgi :D

It wasn't made by Disney, Disney just bought the Rights to it when they bought Pixar and all the other rights they bought
I don't think Holes is underrated, it may depend on our circles but everyone I've existed around from high school to college all love Holes. I'd say Treasure Planet is the most underrated Disney film
Watched it the other day in class before shit let out really felt the nostalgia
The book is better lol jk
@@Unknown69846usually the case but the movie holds its own lol
madame zeroni mentioned her son went to America, so that’s how hector got there, this movie is so good I love how they manage to have like 3 flashbacks tie into the ending
The woodpecker is mad because the bark on the tree is really hard so it has to work hard to get to the food inside. So the woodpecker is depressed saying if only if only the bark was as soft as sky. In otherwise he could glide threw the bark to get to his food source like he glides threw the sky.
Fun fact. Stanley was actually overweight in the original book. Shia Lebouff tried to fatten up to be more book accurate was stopped by I think his agent who earned him that it would be dangerous to do at his young age
“Peanut butter falcon” with Shia is a wholesome movie. I would definitely recommend, and “Fury”
this was my childhood growing up too. i'm 31 now. i had a huge crush on zero and caveman. zero is on tik tok and it just makes me smile. the song at the end i love. they don't make good movies like this anymore.
I remember they made us read this in English class back in school. When randomly going through channels on the TV on summer break one day and stopping on this and realizing the plot was very familiar then to my utter shock realizing finally it was a movie adaptation of the book. Good book. Good film. Very Underrated.
In the book, Elya’s pig didn’t weight more because on the last day he decided to bathe instead of taking the pig up one final time.
Loved this movie and book as a kid. I just couldn’t get over how all the storylines came together so well in the end
This was a book first but the author wrote the screenplay, making it one of the rare occasions that makes a very faithful adaption
A rare time to say the book and movie are both equally great. I read the book in 2005 and again in 2006 in middle school. I loved it that much😊
This movie is a classic bruh. I haven't seen it tho since it came out. The nostalgia is real.
“I’m tired of this grandpa”
THAT’s too damn bad, you keep digging! 😂😂
3:19 Shia LeBoeufs dad in this is Henry Winkler. He played the Fonz in “Happy Days” back in the day. He was also the coach in “The Waterboy” he was also Uncle Al in “Black Adam”. 6:26 I love how he didn’t play her game and how she regretted doing what she did. 19:12 as long as the seal isn’t broken preserved fruit can last a long time. 27:01 they’re not biting them I believe cause of the onions since they would be able to smell them. I don’t think the peaches would give much an odor.
I watched this in school a couple of times back in the day and I swear whenever Sam would say “I can fix that.” The whole class would be hysterical with laughter.
There are strong themes of people being tied together by fate and family legacy in Holes.
It took the Yelnats family four generations to locate a member of the Zeroni family and fulfil the promise that was made between Elya and Madam Zeroni, thus breaking the generational curse. And before she died, Kate condemned Trout's family to search for 100 years to reclaim the wealth they lost when Green Lake dried up as punishment for murdering Sam.
I’m commenting as I’m watching so you may figure it out later in the reaction, but the part in the poem or whatever “‘If only if only,’ the woodpecker sighs, ‘the bark on the trees was as soft as the skies’”
It’s a woodpecker, which pecks trees to get food, lamenting the fact that tree bark is rather hard. It wishes the bark was as soft as a soft blue sky, to make his life easier, although it’s wishful thinking at best.
Legit, Madame Zeroni’s echoing laugh has always been soothing to my ears, as creepy as it may be to everyone else .
Mine too, I just love it
I remember reading the book in fourth grade, then going on a school field trip to see the movie. It was a good day. Also, the song "Dig It" is such a bop.
I've not read the book, so I could be way off base with this, but I always got the impression that Zero's mom was going around looking for jobs, and when she came back one evening Zero was gone. Hopefully the books expanded on what really happened with her!
Which is better then what I always thought. I figured mom was out making a few bucks for them to eat that night, by spending a little time with the nice man. And was having her child stay at the park while she was "busy" and got busted by the police before she could get back to her child. He waited for the whole day and when she didn't return he went looking for her in the places the likely had slept. Parks and such. But couldn't find her and just kept searching for her. Likely getting picked up and sent to juvenile hall once or twice. Meanwhile mom got out as soon as she could. Likely a few days later and went looking for him in the same places he went looking for her but was way to late.
@Yugioh420 That's also very likely, and would explain why she was gone for so long and had a hard time finding him when she got back.
@wolfywox after all only time we see her is after Hectors Lawyers found her and set up everything to reunite them. She could have been in any kind of condition when they found her. She could have been living in a halfway house dealing with case workers doing community service all while searching for her kid on the side.
Yeah, I read a theory that she was caught stealing food or something for the both of them, and went to jail. Then when she got out, by that point, either she forgot where he was, he was gone from the park, or didn't expect him to still be there.
I think what happened to Hector's mom was something Madam Zeroni's spirit did. She saw a chance to get the boys together & allow the curse to be broken, but the only way to do that was to separate Hector from his mom temporarily so that the boys ended up in a challenging situation together. His mom didn't intentionally leave him.
You 100% right. They definitely don’t make Disney films like this anymore. They use to make “family” films that talked UP to children. Nowadays they make “children” movies that talk DOWN to them.
This is why I appreciate 2000s Disney movies. The Parent Trap, The Princess Diaries, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Narnia, The Pacifier, Tuck Everlasting, Sky High.
Like you watch these movies when you’re a kid and love them & you watch them again as an adult and you still love them but with a completely new perspective.
Children are smart, they are like sponges, Disney just doesn’t seem to understand that anymore.
I think The Greatest Game Ever Played is a very good follow up Disney movie to watch. Shia’s acting was amazing and as you said, Disney doesn’t make movies like that anymore
I remember reading the book during elementary and by the time we finished reading it, our teacher played the movie in class. Good times 👍👍
They really don’t make movies like these anymore such a feel good movie
The performances from all the young actors in this movie were so impressive. The movie relies a lot on the characters and I don't think the movie would've been as good had every single actor not killed it. But they did, and that all culminated in one of the best live action Disney movies ever
Surprisingly the area where I lived wasn’t underrated, the book and movie was big in my school especially when we read the book as a class, hands down one of my favorite childhood movies🤙
as a kid, seeing this movie made me hope that there were not actual places like this that make kids do labor... now I'm an adult, but nonetheless this movie is pretty good honestly
@9:19 Sam the Onion Man is 100% husband material, an early crush to be sure 😍 but this movie goes so hard with the themes. It’s a great adaptation of Louis Sachar’s book of the same name, too-when this movie came out I was the type of annoying child who Had To Read The Book First, and for once I wasn’t disappointed! EDIT also most of the holes are fake-there was concern for the environment and only like 4 or 5 of them are real. Excellent early CG.
this is still one of the most faithful book adaptations ever - disney doesn't get all the credit lol
Sam is played by Dule Hill, he costars in a show called "PSYCH" if you want to have fun with a show, that's the one to watch. It's my favorite show of all time and has me laughing every time I watch. So funny!
Tru Confessions for me showed Shia’s acting chops. Powerful movie.
This movie is dope AF he ended up carrying an ancestor his new best friend and lifted the curse it's an awesome fricken movie and the book is even better caveman is a fing Dbag😂
There was most likely more loot buried throughout the desert. That was just the one chest Kate Barlow stole from Stanley’s great-grandfather. Stanley wouldn’t have taken it if it wasn’t rightfully his family’s.
This movie came out shortly after we read the book in school so it was cool to be able to see the story like this right after reading it.
35:22 madam zeroni’s son was already living in America when she told Stanley’s ancestor that he should go to America.
Stanley's trial for stealing the shoes was delayed for six weeks because of baseball season, That's why Zero had already been there when Stanley arrived.
Love your channel Primate! Been watching for a while and my day always gets better when I see you uploaded
Glad you enjoy it man thanks for the support!
18:36 love how innocent they are 🥰 adults would be there trying to charge each other, but kids like “come on ill show you” 😂🙌🏾
One of my favorite movies of all time
This movie gives me chills every time I watch it. Definitely one of my favorites👍🏼 I love how Zero and Stanley were connected over a century ago, it's so cool.
when I was a kid, holes was everywhere at school. Everyone had to read it, or it was at least recommended. It was like Harry Potter before Harry Potter happened. And the movie is pretty great too, it does the book justice imo. So I cant believe that nobody ever talks about it anymore, it's so sad.
Disturbia is another good one with Shia LaBeouf 2007 was his year
I do find it disappointing that Hollywood keeps trying to cancel Shia because of various reasons including his own behavior and issues in his personal life, but he is a legit talent as an actor and he should be in more movies because he’s one of the best actors of his generation. He should’ve been in the recent Indy film and it would actually be really cool to see him come back on Transformers playing more of a bad a** character would be dope. And seeing him in more projects in general.
This movie is what got me into stuff with Henry winkler. When I found out he had a children’s book series, I read them and they were pretty good.
I read the book before I watched the movie!
There is a lot of background information on all the characters in the book.
I think Holes is going to be one of those movies i let my childre watch on loop at the same age i did.
I LOVE this movie. This is gonna be my Halloween costume next year.
Read the book in middle school so when the movie came out I wasn’t disappointed, some stuff I wished it would’ve made it into the movie but it still stayed loyal to the book
there was a 2nd book called Small Steps that never got a movie. it was about Armpit and what happens after the camp. irc he tries to go to a concert with a girl but ended up being counterfeit tickets.
This movie is amazing!!! The plot, actors, scenery is top tier! Duke Hill is the GOAT! He is amazing in Psych as well 😊🥰
Yeah we both read the book and watched the movie in my English class back in high school, great book, great movie.
"Why wood a woodpecker want tree bark to be soft?" Yea idk bro. I just dont know
Truthfully, even if he is Royal Blood, it doesn’t mean the other one isn’t it if I were you guys, I would not piss the lizards
14:11 No, that's just how weather works. Temperature and pressure change with altitude, so when a storm travels over mountains, it loses potency as those factors change.
“I can fix that” 😂 my life everyday being a mechanic
Yeah another classic from my childhood it is amazing
In the book she couldn't afford to have it investigated.he just showed and said hey mom and it broke My heart
The soundtrack is actually good it has unique and fitting songs
Shia is in some amazing films. Fury, Peanut Butter Falcon, Lawless….
Disturbia and Eagle Eye too.
I agree with you about the mother. She probably heard her son was rich and thats the reason she came back.
Love your reactions as always and I love this movie to this day but I'm very loving, so go figure. This is definitely underrated and I think we read the book, which I think was spot on with some differences of course. Favorites are definitely Stanley and Zero, no question. It's sad that this film never got a sequel that it deserves. Regardless if it focuses on the same characters or not, even a sequel in the form of a T.V. show.
And Happy belated 20th Anniversary Disney's "HOLES" (APRIL 18, 2003)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (R.I.P. Eartha Kitt)
(Edit) I just found out the author of the book, Louis Sachar, made a sequel called "Small Steps" and I hope they make it into a film. That has me extremely excited. Also VUDU has this on sell for $8. 47 after tax, I am definitely going to get this today😊😊😊
Khleo Thomas (Zero) recently won a Mortal Kombat tournament at DreamCon dressed as Powerline from The Goofy Movie
Glad you enjoyed the movie a lot!
It's less "..for a Disney movie.." and more the book it's based on, which hits on even more subjects than the movie shows[Like Stanley. Y IV is supposed to be overweight and bullied constantly for it, but all the work digging holes in the sun, changes that and Stanley gets tough.] But I agree, "For a Disney movie, it slaps." A classic for sure.
Great story of tied fates, destiny... etc,.
My dumbass self when I was younger put none of the clues together but what's weird is I remember a BIG chunk of this movie. Probably from all the killing, this was a brutal movie intended for kids haha
I was told holes is just shawshank for kids, I haven't been the same since
😅
I still say, "I'm tired of this Grandpa, Thats to damn bad!" On the regular lmao
Trout was the wardens grandfather.
The bad cgi lizards are the funniest part of this movie lol
I love this movie it is an underrated classic❤
I watched this in gym glass in elementary school such a great memory
"I Can Fix That" LOL
It’s funny talking about descendants. We’ve traced my family back to Aaron Burr and his mistress. My great aunt Betty has the paper trail on our family’s genealogy. And yes. The Aaron burr that shot Hamilton.
Rereading the book as we speak. One of, if not the best book to movie adaptations in my opinion. Joins Socondhand lions and Big fish as one of the great story within a story movies. Still love When Dule Hill delivers "I can fix that."
this movie was made 2003 and I love this movie as a kid as well plus just watched it yesterday for the first time as an adult and im 24. I also read the novel when I was younger.
I remember being a kid and not understanding the significance of zero grabbing the pool ball and watching it when I was older and going “oh wow I was sheltered”
😅
Zero was ready to go ham on some skulls😅
@@fullnelson4986 I remember out loud saying “he can’t grab the ball like that he’s messing up the game” and my parents I guess made the conscious decision not to explain it to me
The dude who plays Zero has a CZcams channel. His name is Khleo Thomas.
8/10
Much better than expected!
I really liked the book, it was a well written one and easy to read and understand. This film adaptation does have some flaws but it was much better than I expected it to be. The film looks very beautiful, the photography is excellent throughout, even in the flashbacks, and the music was great. The screenplay is fairly faithful to the book, and is consistently engaging. The performances from everybody involved are very good, Shia LeBoeuf I actually found quite likable in this movie, and Tim Blake Nelson is fun to watch too. Patricia Arquette is given little to do, and while her character was necessary, I just felt that they could have cast somebody else that fitted the character a tad better, though I liked her chemistry with Sam the onion man, wonderfully played by Psych star Dule Hill. Sigourney Weaver looks beautiful, and seems to be relishing her role as the warden, but my favourite is Jon Voigt. He was absolutely hilarious as Mr Sir. My only other complaint of the movie, other than Patricia Arquette was some slow moments in the middle half, where little of interest happens. On the whole, it is an enjoyable and engaging film. 8/10
The dad in the movie was Adam Sandler's dad in Click
remember watching this in grade 7 great times !
My sister and I watched this movie everyday for a month straight
Yessir‼️‼️ Holes is definitely a classic 💯
Been a while since I saw this movie, didn't realise Ellen Ripley and Buster Scruggs were in it.
My teacher read the book to the class in elementary school. It's worth reading if you ever have the time
"you sleeping outside"😅😂
27:28 You recreated line perfectly 😂 😅
If you want more shai movies, I definitely recommend watching peanut butter falcon. Very wholesome
Ertha Kitt the original Catwoman from the 1960s Batman TV show.
You would Love Shia in Fury. Some of his best work
3:24 I think he was 14. Or at least that’s how old Stanley is. Idk about the actor himself. Probably around the same age
I got holes in different area codes. 👍🏾
Unfortunately, parents lose their kids in a matter of seconds sometimes. Kids tend to wander, and sometimes they stay lost. It's unfortunate, but it happens
thank you youtube reccomended for blessing me with a new channel to binge
✊
i like this seen it several times but the flashback scenes were my favorite parts
Fury would be a cool movie for you to check out, shia as a tank man
His dad is the fanz
Dude is also on scream
25:07 "the lake goes on..."
Ive wished i was **** for a long time..."
If you think this is crazy as a plot in a movie just wait until you hear about the place Dr. Phil sends kids to...
