True story - When Carl Weathers first auditioned for the part of Apollo Creed, he didn't know who Stallone was, he thought he was some lowly set worker or construction guy (and not the star of the movie). Weathers asked for a "real actor" to read against, that he can give a much better audition with someone else... Stallone thought the mix of arrogance and humor was perfect for Apollo Creed.
Stallone based Apollo Creed off of his favorite boxer of all time Muhammad Ali. One of the things that made Ali great besides the fact that he was one of the best boxers of all time was his sense of showmanship and "selling" the sport of boxing to audiences that that didn't have interest prior. He not only boxed but he promoted the sport just as well as he boxed.

47yrs old, I pretty much grew up on the ROCKY franchise, even now, the continuation with the CREED movies, that I’ve been blessed to watch with my children
23:43 Rocky only had one professional fight but he has been fighting pretty much all his life, he started as an amateur fighter many years ago and is at the age where most fighters are retiring from fighting.
No they were pro fights just low level. Amateur boxing by definition doesn't pay, and they have different rules. He was just a mediocre professional, fighting crappy venues, that's how Apollo found him. Apollo wouldn't have picked an amateur. His record was like 40-20ish or something. So he was basically done with his career, a shitty career.
Rocky 3 is just as good, gives you a new look at their love story.
I love Apollo Creed's character. Born in 74', I grew up to these films and watched them as a really young kid. I never once thought of Apollo Creed as a bad guy, just a fierce competitor and emboldens what Heavyweight Champion of the World was back then. This was as prestigious as it gets back in the day. You couldn't have that title without pride and ego.
Creed wanted to make a show in the first one, cant fault him for taking the rematch seriously.

Rocky 2 always hits me emotionally the most and the the best fight of the series with an epic movie score during it.

Not sure if this is true or not as I have never read it, but it is revealed in the novelisation of Rocky II that Gazzo and Rocky are childhood friends.
And in the Rocky IV novelisation, Gazzo is killed sometime before Rocky travels to Russia to prepare for his fight with Drago.
You're very protective of Rocky, this seems to make you see the people who interact with him in negative way when many times its what he needed.
Rocky 2 has me crying every time at the end when Rocky shouts "Yo Adrian, I did it!" For me, I think every guy can relate because we too want to gain love and security with the hard work we put into our lives and when we see Rocky achieve this, we see ourselves in him. It is also a bit sad for some of us because we realize we are still waiting for this gift even though we've put in work. Still, overall, I think many of us cry more because we're happy to see fellow man (even tho its a movie) receive this beautiful gift in life. It is a relief.
2:12 55 years old and I 100% agree with what you are saying about Rocky pressuring her in the first movie. Back then it was much more acceptable to be a little more pushy but there was always a line that is not crossed and Rocky did not cross it. But even for me looking back at it now, many years later I can see how it is not acceptable to do that today and that if that was done today it would be very different. We have grown much more as a society in this area and it is 100% for the better.

His defense will get better later on just wait and see. Also I don't want to spoil too much but your'e gonna really like adrian's growth as a character from being very shy and awkward, to later on being rocky's ride or die. When he needs her to uplift him and her becoming even more confident, The success of him winning the world heavyweight championship really evolved his character too financially. I know you said you like the love story between them both, it gets even more real and genuine also.
Mick's not an A-hole, he's from a different generation where he likely considers what he's saying and how he says it as a form of "tough love." It's just the truth being said in a blunt way to snap Rocky out of his funk before he goes into the ring unprepared and not only loses, but possibly gets hurt.

I don't think enough people realize how powerful the support of a woman who actually loves you can affect a man. It makes us feel like we can take on the world. There is no drug more powerful than genuine love. That's why it's so hard to find.

Excellent reaction! In case nobody brought it up, Rocky had to sell that dog to afford food. He wrote the script to Rocky 1 in just a few days as a last ditch attempt to start a life for himself. He sold the script, bought his dog back and the rest his history. Also, I just subscribed. :)

Something to keep in mind about Paulie moving forward: he’s an uncomfortably real character. Everyone knows someone like him, and viewers give him a lot of hate for having common flaws. He’s there to show just how good of a person Rocky is, because even though it gets rough sometimes, he always sees the best in Paulie and tries to get him to see it too.
Rocky's record going into this fight was 44 wins and 21 losses. Being hit 500 times a night as Rocky suggests equals 32,500 punches to the face, but something tells me the count is closer to half a million...

Glad you took the opportunity to react. This is my favorite of the series. I always look at this one as a companion piece to the first, especially since it literally picks up right where they left off. The climax plus the lead up to the climax was done brilliantly. Also, I appreciated the fact that they made Apollo a sympathetic antagonist. The scene where the trainer is talking Apollo out of the bout always gets me.
Although this is my favorite, I do believe you will love the third. The other films are whatever, to include the sixth one. Finally, Apollo won the first bout for sure just by points. He would have gotten the second one if he didn’t go for the KO. Creed was just a more skilled boxer.

I think its probably not too controversial to say that three out of the six movies are 10/10. Which of the three is where the debate is.
Part 3 will give you more in the story. I like it just a little more than I do 2.

Rocky 3 is the shortest film but the most entertaining. Rocky 6 (Rocky Balboa) is the most deep.
I'm with Rocky on this one. I couldn't imagine seeing my child without my wife. I don't think I possess that kind of strength to overcome that deep of a sorrow. And I'm a pretty tough guy if I do say so myself.

Yo! Im Gen X, 48 years old, and I enjoy watching "young people" watching movies I saw when I was younger. And I agree with you, if she said NO! then its wrong, it has nothing to do with Generations. I personally never make the 1st move, my thinking is that when a girl, lady, woman is ready they will let you know.
I'm gen z, older gen z, I never really got the whole "making a move" thing or the cat and mouse game, my long time partner and I were always so communicative, when after months and months of being friends we had feelings for each other and one day at school we were hanging out and I asked her if she would want to date and she said yes and that she wanted to ask too, then I asked her if I can kiss her and she said yes and we did. We never did the whole guess work game or tried to impress each other in some ways.
We should each other who we were first thing, I feel like more people should do that instead of trying to impress

This is a long series that's definitely worth watching, including the Creed movies, if you like the characters. There's nothing else quite like it where you can watch the entire life of fictional characters from 1976 to 2018. The series is more about life than boxing and you can actually see different stages of life from young adult to old age.
The movies get better and the story is legendary. Watch them all please and then move on to the Creed movies. You won't be disappointed.

You are a great reactor! Nice that you picked up on Apollo Creed behaving differently without the cameras in the beginning there. You stated that you "hated" Apollo Creed at some point. Don't do it! I think you will realize where he is coming from later in the series. I wont spoil anything. But Apollo Creed is a proud man, and he knows how to promote a fight. So whenever there is media he will "change personality" to make as much publicity as possible. He do have respect for Rocky. Did you notice what he did after losing the fight? He raised Rocky's hand and brushed his hair in a friendly way. Apollo knew it was over. He could drop his mask.

Godfather 1 and 2 are 10s. Same with alien and aliens.. but the early Ricky movies are criminaly underated. First Blood is another great Stallone movie

The outside singer guy is his brother Frank Stallone! I think fights went from 15 to 12 rounds after the Ray Mancini , Dook ku Kim fight. It was televised, fought outside in Vegas, and was an all time great fight. But Kim had a burst blood vessel in his head. It went the distance, but Kim was obviously going downward in the last round. He didn't leave the ring alive.

Stallone based his Rocky character on three fighters: former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano, Chuck "The Bleeder" Wepner who fought Mohammed Ali, and former middleweight champion Rocky Graziano whose real name was Rocky Barbella. Barbella changed his name to Graziano so he could get licensed after some legal problems as a juvenile. His autobiography "Somebody Up There Likes Me" was made into a 1956 film of the same name in which he was portrayed by Paul Newman. Love story in that one as well.
Stallone based the Apollo Creed character on a combination of Mohammed Ali and former middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson. Both Graziano and Robinson appear in this episode of a 1961 TV comedy series and you can see where Stallone drew some of his inspiration in creating the characters. No spoilers here for any other film.

Joe Spinell, the actor who played Rocky's boss Gazo, was a very good friend of Stallone's in real life and helped him out when he was broke and also was godfather to Stallone's two sons. Joe Spinell also played Willy Cici, a soldier in first Sonny's then Clemenza's regime in the film Godfather I and later underboss to Frank Pentangelli in Godfather Ii. Joe Spinell also played the character Spinell in William Peter Blatty's 1980 film "The Ninth Configuration", the second installment of his Faith Trilogy after "The Exorcist".

If your biggest aspiration is starting a family, then you really are not like most of your generation. It can be discouraging to hear the opposite from just about everyone, and they have some very valid reasons. Just be aware that if you wait until you’re ready, you’ll never be ready, and you’ll burn so much time no amount of money could make it happen. My baby sister is 22 and recently found out she’s pregnant, and we’re all very excited and happy to add another member to our family 😊
