    I recently used the meriwool midweight base layers for an early AM start in near freezing temps to hike up Mt Yale and Mt Belford. The conditions varied from near freezing to Sunny to Cloudy to Windy to Ice rain. Happy to inform you that meriwool top, bottom, beanie and liner gloves performed extremely well.

      That is what we love to hear! Thank you for your support. What was the temperature range at Mt. Yale and Belford?

      @@meriwoollayers7693 I am going by memory but it was only last week so reasonably accurate. I would say the temp ranges were between 30 to 60 Fahrenheit . Early AM starts were on the cold side and got colder with ascent. After Sunrise and above tree line temps got warmer. On the Summit of Mt Belford, it started to rain Ice eventually settling into a steady rain. Nothing too bad. Easily manageable with a waterproof rain shell and pants. What was impressive was how well the bottom and top base layer maintained comfort throughout the range of temps and conditions. The beanie was an unfortunate casualty as I sweat very heavily from the head. I was flipping it inside out but still it wet out. I had anticipated this and had a spare with me. All in all, very happy with how the gear performed. Next trip Kilimanjaro in September. Wish me luck.

      @@meriwoollayers7693 So the Kili trip is done. Midweight top & bottom & crew socks for the first 5 days were just fine and heavyweight for the Summit night. Worthy investment and the base layers performed very well.

    Thanks for explaining the various weights. I was wondering about that, since it varies from brand to brand. 🌺✈️ Heidi

    How to wear merino wool base layers: put them on.
    This is not difficult stuff people 😅 the stuff keeps you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. It's nature's solution to the need for effective insulation.

    Whats the composition of mid weight products? 100% merino wool?

    • @smnkm4ehfer
      @smnkm4ehfer Před 7 měsíci

      The weight has more to do with the knit, not the composition. Generally you'll see some lycra/spandex blends anywhere from 2% upwards of 40-50%. A small amount of synthetics help with stretch and durability.

  • @stuartsteele9984

    Synthetics such as polypropylene is useful as a base layer down to above freezing temps. Below freezing marino wool makes sense vs synthetics owing to its' high cost and low durability. I have polypropylene zip turtle neck and crew neck base layers that well over a decade old without deterioration. The same cannot be said with marino wool that can last as little as six months. The stink factor of synthetics can be alleviated by using a good deodorant.

      Synthetics are, not is, merino not marino, its not its’. Wow, English class wasn’t a happy place for you was it.

      @@davidj8658 What’s your pathetic excuse for responding as you have. It’s clear to me that you can’t handle the truth. Are you just a died in the wool advocate or retailer hungry for attention and monetary gain that you don’t have the ability to see beyond your limited experiences. I have over 55 years dealing and experimenting with base and the other layers, as well as an inventor with two patents in packs that eliminate the 8 bio-mechanical inefficiencies of the backpack, as well as having developed performance techniques for hiking for virtually doubling one’s speed, increasing comfort and endurance and decreasing fatigue. Blabber on little boy.

      Merino makes sense for all temps. It's better than any synthetic in all temps, but yes, it isn't as durable. A plastic water bottle is very durable, but it doesn't make it a great material to wear 😅

    • @ULperformance
      @ULperformance Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@smnkm4ehfer It’s interesting that you ignore and diffuse my comment. Polypropylene is lighter than wool, permitting greater freedom of motion for improved performance. It is far more durable and significantly lower in cost than Marino wool. I own a number of zip turtleneck long sleeve polypro base layer shirts that have lasted over a decade. You can’t say that about base layer Marino wool. And don’t forget that it’s hydrophobic unlike wool. The added weight of water to Marino wool will cause adhesion to your skin limiting your freedom of motion, less so with polypro. I also own Marino & Alpaca wool base layers & sweaters. I’ll say it again plus - polypro is excellent for cool to cold weather, exceptionally light, durable & far less costly than Marino wool. You can buy a polypro crew neck long sleeve shirt for about $15 dollars, USA. Due to polypros numerous benefits less it’s wearer stink factor, it is far more beneficial for cool weather sports than Marino wool.

      @ULperformance bro you can't even spell merino, you think I'm gonna listen to anything from you? Have fun wearing your recycled bottle caps and I'll continue wearing the objectively better material. I mean if you're too broke to buy merino, just say that 🤷🏻‍♂️
