  • How I Got Home From The PCT | My Trail-To-Town Transition | PCT 2023 // I often get asked about trip logistics like how I get to and from a trail when doing a long-distance hike. In this video, I’m going to bring you along with me and share with you how I got home from the PCT this year.
    Part of my Trail-To-Town Transition after hiking the PCT for the last two months was to relax and take my time getting home up in Washington, which is the main reason why I opted to take a 35-hour train ride home instead of flying.
    The getting home portion of my hike this year ended up being QUITE the adventure and maybe something you’ll find useful when planning your own long-distance hike, whether it’s a thru-hike or section hike along the PCT.

    Do you enjoy taking your time coming back from a big trip? As part of my Trail-To-Town Transition this year after hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, I decided to take the long way home and board a 35-hour overnight train ride from Los Angeles to Seattle.

    I think this is the most perfect trail-to-town transition ever. So romantic, peaceful and gradual. If I were you I'd probably cry on that train at least several times, not because of sadness, but because of the beautiful views, the romantic aspect of the whole journey, and the post long hike blues, ofc. You made a great decision to take that train, thank you for showing us your journey back :)

    You mentioned a lot about reading “your book” during your time of reacclimatizing to non-trail life. Given your spirit of adventure and your “foodie” brand, I’d adore a video of you discussing what kinds of books you like to read and maybe sharing a few of your favorites and why you like them so much. As an avid hiker and bookworm, this is a video I would watch again and again

    What a perfect transition from being alone for 981 miles and then going back to civilization. Watching this I wouldn't hesitate to take a train across country. Sure beats all that hectic herding of cattle feeling associated with flying. The food looked VERY appetizing too! Thanks for sharing this; very interesting and helpful info too. Hope you're doing well Kathleen & welcome home!

      After this ride home, I'm now obsessed with train travel. It's so much more fun than flying and you get to see so much more of the area you're traveling through. Having a Trail-To-Town Transition plan has been key with helping me deal with the Post Trail Blues, something I'll talk about in detail in my next video.

    Funny story; my GF and i broke down in the bay area 2 days before Thanksgiving. We lived in Sacramento, so we got some amtrak tickets... but we had a few hours to kill... so, being young and dumb, we spent our time at a bar near the station, Oakland I think...
    After some beers and shots, we got on board...
    Then we passed out. (She had the pot, it's totally her fault, lol)
    I woke up with the sun rising, I'm seeing mountains...and I realized that we were not in the valley at all.
    We had slept past our stop in Sacramento and we were just about to hit Klamath falls.
    This is now the day before Thanksgiving. There was snow on the ground. We didn't have warm clothes...or enough cash to buy 2 more tickets south...
    We begged a motel 6 to gives a cut rate on a room, hit up a thrift store to get some warmer clothes and waited until the train was coming south.
    At 1st, they (amtrak) weren't really empathetic to our delema. But, after a few minutes, they agreed to issue us tickets back to Sacramento...
    I've used amtrak a billion times, and it's amazing. I've gone back and forth on amtrak across the country several times and I love it.

    FYI, if you apply for the Amtrak credit card and spend $2k within the 1st few months, you can earn enough points for free travel. That's how I'm going from OH to GA next year to do the AT. Really looking forward to it at the beginning of my trek.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  Před 9 měsíci +1

      That's a great deal and a great idea, but only if you're a good and responsible credit card person. Have your money work for you and help you go on more trips!

      @@TheHungryHiker You are spot on regarding being responsible w/ the card. I'd suggest using it for those things you'd already be purchasing (food, gas, etc) and be sure to pay it off in full when the statement comes (or even before). You can always send in payments earlier than required.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  Před 10 měsíci +3

      Ticket prices will vary greatly depending on when you book your ticket and the station you get on/get off at. The earlier you book your ticket, the less expensive the ticket will be. I was only able to book my ticket a couple weeks in advance and paid $846 for the Roomette from Los Angeles to Seattle. Not the cheapest or fastest way to travel, but definitely the most fun and relaxing.

      @aledenra It’s a pretty long train ride (35 hours), you have the opportunity to lay down flat in a bed AND all of your meals are paid. You get what you pay for when it comes to traveling. Tickets are less expensive the sooner you book them though and Amtrak also has a points rewards program that’s free to sign up for and offers deals from time to time. Book early for the best price.
