The Minecraft furnace. So basic that most of us probably never give it a second thought after we craft our first one. Well, Austin is NOT that guy. The Minecraft furnace can craft a plethora of items... but should that be possible? Now I'm not talking about the recipes for the items, but the heat it takes to melt them down. Today Austin is going to find out if the furnace is up to snuff or if the science will burn it to the ground!

Here's a question about the furnace: How does it light itself? For every other fire you need something already hot, like lightning or lava, or a flint and steel. But the furnace just lights itself.
Same way coal just lights itself when you put it on sticks.
Honestly a logical explanation in the lore of the game might be....magic. Magic is something that exists in minecraft and maybe creating a spark for fire is like the most easiest to do thing that it is basically like breathing.
We also need to remember that Steve has enough power to punch through a tree in seconds. Him using his body for a fire is not out of question.
There are also chemicals that when close to oxygen will start to heat up or set on fire.
@@lurkingone7079 Yeah crafting table has magic for sure. I would say the crafting table imbues the furnace with the ability to be lit on command as long as there's fuel inside. Same with torches, the crafting table just imbues the torches with eternal fire
minecraft has no animation for that.....
Lava also never cools unless it’s in contact with water, water sources can be infinitely generated in one-block gaps, and both fluids flow indefinitely downwards. I think we can all agree that Minecraft logic does not follow real-world rules, like melting temps and chemical equations.
"Some others have suggested granite..."
Ah yes, granite. As if that's not already a block in the game.
That’s what I said lmao
@Frostey, A Minecraft library Almost all granite found in the United Kingdom is of the grey variety. If you check out the wikipedia page for granite, you'll see that it comes in a variety of colours, including grey.
lol
Other granite? Just not granite granite?
@Joshua Federico diorite, granite, and andesite are pretty good blocks for some garden decorations.
I love how Austin tries to make sense of a game where you can place water to break your fall, break a tree in the middle and it doesn't fall over, and where you can eat to repair a 30 block fall.
Hey don't get ahead of yourself, I've been tempted to do a video on the water trick lmao
@@Ahourigan oh my God it's actually Austin

@@Ahourigan What about the fact that a stick and a piece of cobblestone combined create a lever that can be flicked with enough energy to somehow power massive machines forever?
I always just thought it was weird that 8 cubic meters of rock gets compressed into just one cubic meter
I've long assumed that the furnace has a high carbon element to it which would actually increase the temperatures it could withstand. The 8 cubic meters being compressed into 1 cubic meter might also help explain the high melting point of the furnace (it's much denser than normal stone).
@@grn1 Know how the recipe doesn't match the appearance of the two cavities of the furnace? It doesn't make sense and isn't supposed to make sense.
@@Bretaxy Party Pooper. Obviously it's a game and uses game logic but that doesn't mean we can't have some fun trying to science it.
Wich is mostly hollow to allow smelting
its really dense bc you shoves 8 meters into a single meter, and that alone would make the melting point higher
kinda wanna see a theory on the ambient temperature of the nether in Minecraft, and how impossible it is to go there and not get severely burned. imagine wearing iron armour there, the intense heat conducted by the metal would definitely cause severe third-degree burns in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. The reason I ask is that in the nether, there is lava literally everywhere, so it's going to be intensely hot, but woodblocks and other flammable materials can survive being placed in the nether without going up in flames instantly. The nether is (most likely) a closed space, shown by the layer of bedrock above and below, so, to guess, it is a closed system that would contain most of the heat energy given off from the lava (kinda like an oven or kiln), instead of dissipating as quickly as it does in the overworld as well as in real life, causing the temperature in the nether to be even hotter than it would be if it had an open ceiling giving it access to an open atmosphere to allow the energy to dissipate more quickly. or I could be completely wrong and be making a complete fool of myself. either way, I find it to be an interesting topic.
Well its enough for water to literaly not exist without glitches, even If you bring It there and place It, so chances are you still would not walk for long...

Breaking News: Minecraft BANNED in the US!
True but I don’t think it actually melts completely into liquid, it might just become malleable enough for the individual cobbles to stick to each other
@@jamesgabor9284 Wouldn't that also "melt" the furnace into "smoother" stone?
I mean the bottom of the furnace is a smoother stone so maybe the heat is just concentrated there?
i actually came up with this exact question a long time before you posted this video. Good job explaining it (it technically does not make sense since there is no flux added to the furnace, but it is probably just neglected in a similar way as iron used to make the chest latch or forge used to make metal instruments). But there is still one thing even your theory does not explain: How is the furnace able to withstand melting cobblestone to make it smoother if it is made of it?
You can see that the part of the furnance that is the hottest is also smooth, so if you heat out the cobblestone untill it's maleable it will become smooth on it's own presumably.
I don't knoe much about rocks but this aounds logical enough.
Use a crucible. The outside of the forge will act as a heat sink and only the small area right below the crucible will get to that peak super heat.
A forge also needs a bellow to work.
In ancient times, they made glass in stone forges regularly.
.....the cobblestone in the furnace has Flux.
question: how hot would the nether be in irl temperature? how do we survive there as a player? genuinely curious
5000-10000°C? you can't place water in nether and even if you did, it will instantly evaporate
You can survive in lava for a few seconds and also regenerate to full health as long as you have some food.
You can survive a 20 meters fall without breaking your bones.
You can use magic to enchant objects.
You are not a normal human being in minecraft so it's natural you can survive rougher enviorments.
How rough though?
Well you can sprint and jumo trough a 1 meter thick lava block without armour and you'd survive both the initial exposure and the fire damage afterwards, let me get the point across, imagine lava coating your body, from your head all the way to your feet, having lava remainign on you when you leave that initial area, not only living when it all falls off but missing no limb and you can regenerate all the way back to full health.
This means that you have a heat resistance that peaks at about 2000°C, way above the boiling point wich is the minimum temperature in the nether.
@@resu9277 Steve would literally be chilling in the sun if that was the case :))
My personal headcanon is that since my character is a demigod, he has access to some limited types of spells, like putting a cooling enchant on his nether horses' armor sets so that they're more comfortable

Oh man, think about this: a science class where, the first class, the teacher shows a "THE SCIENCE" video and announces that by the end of the year, for your big final project, you will find something in a movie or game that sounds plausible but isn't scientifically possible and use what you've learned to explain why. That would be SO much better than most science class projects. Also you are 100% allowed to ask the teacher to discuss topics related to the problem that you found, but you can't tell the teacher what the problem is, just ask to cover a topic. That would force students to pay close attention to the topics covered, because anything might be their big clue to the problem, AND it would be more fun than most projects.
