19-Year-Old Arrested for DWI at Nearly TRIPLE the Legal Limit (0.23%)

- Around 10:43 PM on December 4, 2023, the Pequannock Township Police Department received a call from an employee at the QuickChek located at 29 Jackson Avenue informing them that a visibly intoxicated female was sitting inside her vehicle in the parking lot. The witness reported that the vehicle struck the curb while the driver pulled into the parking lot and she observed the driver stumbling in the parking lot while returning to the vehicle. As he was arriving on scene, Patrolman Brian Parigi noticed a gray 2013 Kia Optima matching the witness description fail to signal while making a left turn on Jackson Avenue in violation of 39:4-126. As he began pursuing the vehicle, he observed the driver depressing her brakes multiple times for no apparent reason in violation of 39:4-56 (delaying traffic), which could have caused an accident with another vehicle behind her. A
fter the vehicle abruptly turned left onto Sage Road, Patrolman Parigi activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver kept driving before eventually coming to a stop near the intersection of Elm Road and Kenmore Road. After she pulled over, Patrolman Parigi approached the vehicle to make contact with the driver, who was identified as 19-year-old Laura. Sergeant James Dericks and Patrolman Stephen Knatz also arrived on scene to assist with the traffic stop shortly afterwards. Laura was asked to exit the vehicle. She told them that she was headed home, but denied consuming any alcohol. Based on his suspicion of impairment, Patrolman Parigi asked Laura to perform field sobriety exercises.
The first exercise was the recitation of the alphabet from “B” to “K” and she failed to do so in the correct sequence. The second exercise was counting backwards from 52 to 36, and she was unable to perform this exercise in the correct sequence as well. The third exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, and Patrolman Parigi observed the lack of smooth, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. He also observed vertical gaze nystagmus in both eyes. The fourth exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Laura failed to touch heel-to-toe on each step, turned improperly, and took an incorrect number of steps. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test, and Laura failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion, did not count as instructed, and nearly fell over multiple times.
Based on the witness statement, her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, and her inability to adequately complete the field sobriety exercises, Patrolman Parigi placed Laura under arrest for driving under the influence. Her vehicle was impounded for a mandatory 12-hour hold under John’s Law. She was initially transported by Patrolman Parigi to the Riverdale Police Department for the administration of the Alcotest.
At the Riverdale Police Department, Laura was read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and agreed to submit breath samples for testing. The Alcotest machine was administered by Riverdale Police Sergeant Andrew Duffy. Her results indicated a BAC of 0.23%, which was nearly triple the legal limit of 0.08% for drivers over 21 and 23 times the legal limit of 0.01% for drivers under 21.
Laura was then transported back to the Pequannock Township Police Department for further processing and eventually released to her mother after she signed the Potential Liability Warning Form on Laura’s behalf. She was issued the following summonses: Operating under the influence, reckless driving, delaying traffic, and failure to give proper signal

I agree. I would hope at 19 she doesn’t have a long history of drinking which means she’d be very susceptible to alcohol poisoning, which is extremely dangerous. It happened to my oldest daughter who is only 4’11”. She arrived at the ER with lactic acidosis, a very dangerous condition that is the result of alcohol poisoning. She spent 4 days in the hospital.

She couldn't figure out how to get out of her car (I assume there is a way to unlock it from the inside), butchered the alphabet, couldn't count backwards (or forward most likely), couldn't follow the pen, took like 20 steps for the heel/toe test, and pretty much did the bunny hop while attempting to do the one-leg stand. She was beyond plastered! I'm just glad, and motorists on the road that night I'm sure were very thankful, that she was pulled over by the police before someone got seriously injured or, God forbid, killed.
Her level of drunkeness was mind boggling.

Sometimes these are so hard to watch because I was a victim of a drunk driver. I was t-boned and left for dead. Brought back to life twice by an off duty nurse that came upon me. Seven long painful years inpatient/outpatient in a physical rehabilitation hospital. It's just disgusting that people do this. 😵💫😮💨😤

I've had 2 cousins killed by drunk drivers, and I actually got a dui when I was 19 for driving a block away to my friends house after leaving a bar and I wasn't drunk but was definitely way too tipsy to drive.
It was an incredibly stupid decision but in a way I'm happy it happened because I NEVER drove after drinking again. I realised how stupid and careless of a decision it was and I had to have a breathalyzer installed in my car and it gave me a criminal record for a long time before I got a pardon.
Never ever drove after drinking again since then.

What I find even more horrifying than drunk drivers, is the lack of knowledge shown by some of the commenters. One must assume they watch a lot of these videos, but they still question why the cops "waste time" doing FST's on an obviously drunk individual. FFS! Do they not get it yet!! The cops have to get proof for the courts about the person's drunken state. It's called EVIDENCE! If it is not done any lawyer worth shit would pull that case apart, were it not for the visual proof.

Y'all have to recognize that if there's a field test that they COULD DO and they end up NOT doing it, a lawyer can use that to get her entire case thrown out of court. I'm fine with her doing the horizontal gaze nystagmus test for three hours, as long as she actually gets punished for this (and yes, I'm aware that the judicial system being what it is, she'll probably end up getting a free participation trophy and two months non-reporting probation, in lieu of actual punishment)

So basically the law now in Jersey allows for a teenager to get as drunk if not more than this young lady as long as they are under 21 atleast once to just get a warning if pulled over. Ppl like her are why I am terrified to let my wife drive somewhere with my 5 week old son and 5 year old daughter. We need to make the punishment for driving under the influence of any drug or alcohol way more severe. Back in my younger day I got caught with a bottle of pills. Never in trouble before. The prosecutor wanted to send me to prison for 5 years first offense. These ppl are 3 times the limit and they get a ride home from jail. My bail was 164k! I wasn't selling pills. I was driving and got pulled over and they found the pills. I was addicted and taking the pills. Alot of them. I didn't need 5 years in prison. Ended up getting 3 years probation and am coming up on 16 years clean from heroin and opiates. I never drove high or drunk.

my dad was drunk and caused an injury crash and got charged with DUI a few years back. i know he’s my dad i care about him which means he needs to learn but he didn’t get the sentence he needed to help him learn he only got a month. i’m still mad at him for it. he isn’t an alcoholic anymore but now he’s addicted to cigarettes 😕

19 and already a drunk driver. My Uncle was killed by a drunk driver back in 1939 as a boy and things have not changed much since then. They still get a slap on the wrist unless they kill someone and even then it's too light. Why do people do this shit? Vehicles should be treated like killing machines but too many people act like the cars are driving themselves. A drunk shouldn't handle a gun and a drunk shouldn't handle a vehicle.

I live in a pretty small town (15 to 20,000)..got stopped one night going home from work for a headlight out...cop thought he smelled alcohol and asked if I'd been drinking...."no" i said....he said "pardon me i thought i smelled beer"...i let him know i do not drink beer...ever (the taste is just nasty).....he had me get out to do FST, with it being about. 10 degrees i asked to skip test and go straight to breathalyzer... passed with 0.0 ...the next day I was cleaning out my car and found an empty beer bottle under seat , my son must have left it when he borrowed my car (the lil bastard lol).....I never smelled it, but that cop did...
