FIRST DRIVE: Kia EV9 - MASSIVE New Range Rover Rival

  • Need to move seven people with electric power alone? No space for an intercity train on your driveway? Then you might fancy a look inside the biggest, most expensive Kia of all time: the new EV9. This absolute unit of a family SUV has all the usual stuff: big screen, big torque, hot-hatch troubling acceleration and lots of annoying driver ‘assist’ tech, but it’s what it’s made out of (recycled plastic, fishing nets and even sawdust) that Kia thinks will give its huge flagship an eco selling point, and allow it to steal customers from the Range Rover Sport, Tesla Model X, and Volvo’s new EX90.

    I watch a lot of auto review content, and im still baffled by how often people keep brining up “Korean” and “cheap” when it comes to Hyundai and Kia. Yes, they’re Korean brands, but so what? Nobody mentions the nationality of other brands. Re the “cheap” comments; they’ve long since moved on from cheap. They’re building some of the best, most reliable and good looking cars in the market, at a good price. It’s not cheap; it’s quality. Time to move on from these old stereotypes, and to stop pretending to be surprised at the value; they’ve been putting out quality cars for a long time

    I have literally just got home from test driving the EV9. We have a XC90 and are looking for a new car. The EV9 is a very good product for a lower price than the EX90. I like it and our kids did too - bonus! No air suspension, which is a bit of a shame. Very good car.

      “Very good car” rather depends on your frame of reference. Your kids will love it now, while they don’t know any better, and will hate in 50 years when it never stops raining! Buy a 10 year old car and keep it forever, show the little darlings how to make a positive difference. Or, buy a nearly 3-ton monster carrying a 1-ton battery, comprising the most noxious chemicals transported by road, 90% of which end up in landfill, which their generation will have to deal with, to show them how to make a bad difference.

    • @Harhawink
      @Harhawink Před 7 měsíci +31

      @@M4rky71 you gotta educate yourself by quite a lot about how batteries are recycled and how oil is drilled and in what "ethical conditions"
      Battery doesnt weight 1 tonne in this car. Its roughly 500 kilos the battery and after an approximate 15-25 year life cycle in a car it still can be used without any major modifications for example in a house hold as a wallbox for the next 20-30 years. After that combined 35-55 years the battery can be recycled roughly 85% and use in minor electric devices batterys.
      EV9 as it stands is one of the most recycled car in production as per say and the seat material feel way more refined than like 95% of the car industly leather.

    • @M4rky71
      @M4rky71 Před 7 měsíci

      @@Harhawink try asking Google how much of the worlds LiPo batteries are recycled if you don’t believe me. You do know it’s chemistry right? You can’t create a chemical reaction, use the energy it produces, then magically reverse it and do it again! Try recycling a match if you don’t believe me. The only parts of an EV’s battery that are used again are about 2% of the raw material, and the aluminium box it comes in. The recyclable claim is for gullible idiots.
      As for oil, that isn’t in question here, that’s equally as bad, but the oil exists and so does the infrastructure. We should all be driving 600kg, 150hp, all steel, 200mpg petrol cars. And then keep them for at least 10 years. Building 3 ton EV’s certainly isn’t the answer to the planets problems, far from it. All EV’s do is help the government milk idiots to help them meet their meaningless GDP growth figures. And seriously, 15-25 year lifecycle? You really have shown you’re a marketeers dream. How many of these EV9’s have been recycled - none! It’s just what the brochure tells you. Car companies don’t give a sh1t about the environment, they just need to sell you a new car! Also, it’s a 2,600kg vehicle, you are trying to say it still weights 2,100kgs without the battery? EV’s only make sense in cities, but not 3 ton, 4 metre long, two meter wide ones! Seriously dood, what’s the weather like on your planet.

    • @moogle68
      @moogle68 Před 5 měsíci

      even if there isn't a trim option with a different material (I think there is, actually), I'm sure you could find a place that does wraps to wrap just those arch panels either with the goal of making it look like a different material entirely, or with PPF/window tinting material that blocks out the majority of UV light, which (aside from bad weather + physical damage) is usually what causes discoloration/structural weakening/warping of plastics. I also know that there are maintenance/protective products here in the US specifically made for the external pieces of black plastic trim that you are worried about. I've used them on one of my old cars that had almost 200k miles on it and they definitely revitalized the worn trim, and rejuvenated the trim that was still decent to almost new levels. Furthermore, I doubt a full set of new plastic wheel arches would be all that expensive after it's been out for a few years.

      Those are are two finalists too (Lucid Gravity would be first but is arriving too late). I have deposits on each (and the Volvo but I've given up on that vaporware) and am expecting both early next year so we'll see who crosses the finish line. For us the price difference isn't as much -- by the time you are getting the GT it's only ~$10K more for the RIvian. The RIvian has much better range, is slightly faster, has more off-road capacity and more storage. And I like toe look a little more. But the Kia has a bunch of major feature advantages -- faster charging, CarPlay/AA-support, on demand regen braking adjustment down to effectively normal braking, captains seat second row, a better balance between screen and physical controls and the promise of more advanced assisted driving capacity in the future (Rivian has said this is not a priority for them). Among other things. Kia will also have better dealer support and probably be cheaper to maintain and repair. The Kia's poor, below average range is really the only thing keeping the Rivian is contention. The Rivian will go almost 100 miles further on a full charge, and that's the Large battery pack -- it could do closer to 150 more with the max pack.

      @@cranburydad what I’ve seen of the Lucid Gravity so far is extremely interesting. It’s a gorgeous vehicle and the range and features are impressive (as is the price which is comparable to the R1S.) I agree with all you wrote about the R1S being more attractive than the EV9 and with significant better range. The R1S also tows 7000 lbs vs 5000 lbs for the EV9 which is important to me.
