@@treetopjones737The Squire of Gothos was about Trelane, who was of a species of non corporeal beings. Q is an omnipotent being. Non-corporeal beings may have abilities beyond the physical limitations of corporeal beings, but they don't necessarily have powers. Omnipotent beings have all-powerful, infinite, or virtually unlimited authority or influence. In other words, some agree they are separate categories.
If y l00k up Trelane in the memory alpha, he is not even listed in the powerful and godlike list. His nature is mentioned at the top, which is non corporeal lifeforms. However, there was a non canon novel called Q Squared, which revealed that Trelane was of the Q Continuum, which would make some sort of sense if his species are somehow not.

  • @tofersiefken
    @tofersiefken Před 8 měsíci +23

John de Lancie is delightful as Q. He's villainous, though not a villain. He's a foil for Picard and an antagonist in relation to humanity, but also a being on an evolutionary scale far beyond humans, similar to the "god-like" beings the TOS crew occasionally encountered. The Q episodes really develop the powers, limitations and lore of the species in interesting ways, and reaches across several branches of the franchise. (Fun Fact: I first knew John de Lancie from his (mentally unbalanced) soap opera character Eugene Bradford on Days of our Lives 1982-1986 and 1989-1990).

Personally, I despised the Q character. Maybe it just felt overused and over-powered. I won't say more to not be a spoiler. As it is, he is a meddlesome trope at best. I have hopes maybe he's a bit different in the Picard series, but I don't watch it. Star Trek lost me as a fan since 1969 with some not-too-recent choices made by writers and producers. To avoid spoilers the only one I will specify is not spinning off Captsin Riker and his USS Titan as a new series. What's not to love about a doctor who saves the Captain's wife by biting her so its venom will put her onto a coma, then casually tells Riker his wife is delicious?
John De Lancie, the actor, though, I have only the highest respect for.

In the late '90s, DeLancie costarred with Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) in a short-lived but fun Western/comedy/adventure series called "Legend." Anderson played a writer of adventure stories, DeLancie an eccentric inventor (think Tesla, but exaggerated). Together, they brought the hero from Anderson's stories to life.

The portrayal of the Ferengi is still in its infancy in TNG. (Honestly, they usually dress with a lot more rizz, not so much the animal skin sashes.) If you react to DS9 in the future, there is a lot more development of Ferengi culture and the rules by which they conduct their endeavors. The ears, apart from being sensitive to certain sound frequencies, are also very sensitive erogenous zones for the species. TMI?

True. The show get's a lot better over time. Not that the early stuff is bad, but it's far from what it becomes.
The Ferengi episode is a perfect example for why I - and I guess a lot of other fans - had some problems with Wesleys character. It's just lazy writing to "feature" Wesley. They receive that brain manipulation transmission the whole time, but nobody on the ship but that kid have a look at it and makes that connection? Even when there is clearly strange stuff going on?
And though I know he's quite popular, I didn't really liked Q at all (great actor though). The idea of introducing an antagonist that just has godlike powers with no "counterplay" always felt boring and annoying to me.
Though same as with Wesley, there storylines get better.

I highly recommend that coming of age movie for a reaction. Wesley Crusher gets bashed a lot, both by "fans" and by the Enterprise crew. (You could almost make a drinking game out of how many times a ranking crew member has the line "Shut up Wesley!") Fun fact, the Stargazer was originally going to be a Constitution-class ship like Kirk's Enterprise and then they decided not to reuse that model to keep it more 'special' and made a new one with four nacelles. They picked the name Constellation-class so they could dub it over Geordi saying it. You can tell this because in Picard's ready room for this season there's a model of a Constitution-class ship and they only swapped it out for the Constellation-class Stargazer later.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but there is a blooper from this episode that was on the later blurays. In the Battle episode Brent S who plays Data shines a flash light on the Stargazers plaque and says in a Jimmy Stewart voice "My God Mary, they built this thing in Bedford Falls!" That references the movie "its a wonderful life." Plus the Stargazer was for most of production set to be a Constitution class ship the same class as the rebuilt Enterprise from the TOS movies as they still had those models to use from past films. But towards the end of shooting they made the change to have the ship be a mid class between the TOS era and TNG. And a new ship class and model was made. Even the actors called it a Constitution class ship, but was redubbed a Constellation class as it looked like the same word when they spoke.

The Battle is a favorite of mine. It's a good intro to Picard as a character and would lay some foundation for later seasons. Indeed, the Battle shows vulnerability that we do not usually see in Jean Luc Picard in early TNG. And Ron Jones has a tremendous score. (Thank you for letting me tout that.)

17:23 I would definitely classify *Q* as a villain. IMO his popularity among some fans could be influencing their opinion as to his clasfication. But again, I would absolutely classify *Q* as _a villain._ If I'm being generous, I might call him _the antagonist_ in some episodes. But a rose by any other name…

12:13 Mark! I like "WC" too! He is inspired by Gene Roddenberry himself! Someone called "WC" the definition of a "Mary Sue" but I hate that expression! 😒 WC is a prodigy, but for that to work, he is given "Player Knowledge" while the others only have "Character Knowledge"! But regardless, he is what a lot of poor people with little education, such as my paternal grandparents, would call "book smart", a "smart alec", a "smarty pants", a "wiseacre", and so on and so forth, even with evidence that the person actually is smarter than they are!
My paternal grandparents liked to shield themselves with "The Ten Commandments" to get their way, but shouting at us that we weren't allowed to "talk back" to them, when we were simply correcting their mistakes, by saying that as our elders, they were always right by default! "Young Sheldon" has it so much better in comparison! Grandma was like the mother in "Carrie" when she became fearful of the weather or anything.
Ergo, that's why "WC" never annoyed me! 😤

2:34 Don't know if you know this, but Bones got that nickname from Kirk. It is a derivative of the old nickname for a doctor, Oxford English Dictionary's earliest evidence for sawbones is from 1837, in the writing of Charles Dickens. Then with Dr. Crusher, I'VE always figured it was a nod toward Bones because of the term "Bone Crusher". LOL

Anyone who contradicts what you're seeing with your own two eyes is probably just talking about a different storyline. Q isn't a villain, he's a force of nature who is as above us as we are to a microbe. If he were truly evil, he could wipe out humanity with a wave of his hand.
Humanity, especially Picard has piqued his curiosity to a point where he has become almost obsessed with us and where we are destined to go as a species.
The first few appearances of Q were darker because the writers hadn't fleshed him out yet, he has plenty of fun episodes coming soon enough.

    Great reactions Jen!
Q really is more of a trial, a burden they must bear, than an actual villain. He is at times villainous, like with the threat of putting humanity on trial at Farpoint and putting Tasha in the penalty box (to face nonexistence if someone else commits a penalty) here. In some ways he's more like an excessively powerful small child, which is an idea we've seen before in the Original Series, though I don't think you saw that episode with us.
A lot of the season one episodes call back to previous episodes of Original Star Trek, but I think that was more to ground the viewer into the universe with familiar storylines, which was fine.
The Battle was another good character exposition episode, like much of the first season, where it gives us more insight into who the crew members are in the course of a story. As far as the A story of the episode went, it was pretty basic but with some nice tweaks. And my head dreams of a future without headaches, but my 23 concussions are more to fault for my frequent migraines than some Ferringi torture device. 😛 Also, the design of the Stargazer was always one I liked, even as different as it was from other previously seen Star Fleet vessels.
Hide and Q always struck me as a update of the Original Series episode Where No Man Has Gone Before but with Riker taking Gary Mitchell's role, and doing better with it by not giving in to the hunger for the power. And, as mentioned above, the exposition here is to teach us more about Riker himself and who he really is.
