    I'm going to be watching all of these videos. I'm glad I watch this one because I'm going to be happy when I can just get the start screen to load. I noticed when I load one last night, it loaded a section of a game object. So that was a start. :) thank you for all of these in-depth tutorials

      I got a friend excited about Nes maker and I just sent him to the website :) I know you guys are super busy, the fact that someone took time to help me get the best start makes this product the coolest thing I bought in a long time. I honestly can't praise it, or the team enough.

    I bought NESMaker a few years back and I'm hoping to dive into it soon. Are there any plans on creating more of the "prefab" game styles that it comes with? It would be cool to get more things such as "poiint-and-cliick adventure" for things like Shadowgate or NESCape,and "Racing" for things like Rad Racer and Spy Hunter

    Any advice for I guess you'd call an "open world" 8-bit 2-d platformer? Like Zelda but not top-down and not screen to screen. A platformer with doors you press up to enter another world instead of Zelda stairs to the underworld. Hope that makes sense. Is this possible with NESmaker? What would be the limitations? Thanks.
    Basically like Mario but open world smooth scroll up/down/left/right to explore a world .

      First, make sure you're looking at the most recent tutorial, which you can find on the LEARN page of The New 8-bit Heroes website. That will probably give you a lot of good ideas of where to start 🙂

    Ran into a problem. I went to player under game objects like you said, but my player tileset isn't being used. It's just using a blank one. I thought the bmp file "PlayerTiles" would be the one it would use?

    I commented on an older video earlier, and was directed to this one in the forums.
    I'm using Mesen as described in the video, but when I try to test the game, the screen in the emulator just goes grey.
    I set my working directory to the projects folder where I saved my game.

    • @TheNew8bitHeroes
      @TheNew8bitHeroes  Před 5 lety +1

      That's a bit too vague to really get any answers for you. I don't know where you are in the process. If the game is just hanging, it likely has to do with you making custom graphics and not really understanding how sprite 0 works yet, but that's just a guess. There are a million variables. The forums are a place where people have had a lot of issues, and solved a lot of issues, in a collective spot, where screen shots can be shared, code can be shared, etc...so it's a much more reliable place to seek for answers than here :-)

    is it still the case that having different frames of animation for different animations screws things up?

    • @TheNew8bitHeroes
      @TheNew8bitHeroes  Před 5 lety +3

      Yes. This is for different frames of the SAME animation type when facing different directions - that's when this happens. If you have walk up which is only two frames and walk right which is 8 frames, and you are on the 8th frame and change from right to up, that's when it will happen. It doesn't affect changing states (like if walking is 8 frames and jumping is 2...that's fine). And it *can* be fixed by making it so the macro for changing direction changes the animation frame back to 0, but in most instances you wouldn't want to do that, especially for one off animations, like an attack.

  • @oleschoolgamers
    @oleschoolgamers Před 5 lety +1

    Hey guys. Not trying to be difficult, just asking questions as I watch each video =) So here goes this one. I'm good up until 8:26 when you select the animation assignments. The window that pops up says "Monster Animation Info". But this is the game object for "players" animation for walking left, right, up, down, etc. correct?

    • @TheNew8bitHeroes
      @TheNew8bitHeroes  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm not sure exactly how much clearer to make it than I do in each of these videos :-) Yes - you created a bunch of animations for that object that you're in. "Monster" really just means game object in this case - they're generally all using the "monster info" dialog box.

    • @oleschoolgamers

      @@TheNew8bitHeroes haha, yeah, sometimes I miss the obvious when I get too deep into the weeds. Thanks for clarifying, just wanted to double check because it seemed important in the video to distinguish the player from the monsters so wanted to make sure I understood the difference. Thanks again for the reply, very cool to get immediate feedback!

    36 US is okay. I like the idea of making NES games. I have nearly 0 skills in programming, but start to learn with Java and Android. And i want to learn how to use sprites and paint them. looks like your programm make this easier? so maybe it is a good start with my creative ideas and THEN to learn and Code? what there is behind the charakter that he move up and down and how much life he have. is there a option to see code? i think i will give it a try. good work. i use at the moment RPG Maker VX Ace.

      Yes. That is exactly the design - you can get started with zero programming experience, and then keep building your skillset all the way to building your own custom engines from scratch :-)

      You're looking at a very, very old tutorial for an older version of the software (it should show a tag in the top right corner warning it is out of date, and shows the version number in the description)
      Make sure you're using the tutorials on the LEARN page of the website - they are always the ones that are current with the current version of the software. :-)

      @@TheNew8bitHeroes No, I'm using that version. I never update cuz I'm too used to my version. The new one is very different. So how can I fix this problem?

    • @TheNew8bitHeroes
      @TheNew8bitHeroes  Před rokem

      @@themusicalsnailman Your problem probably has to do to the sprite zero hit. Unfortunately, there were quite a few improvements in the new version that were addressed - a lot of help you'll find will be on 4.5.x, less on a version that is almost 4 years old now. But you probably have your sprite zero not set up correctly, which is causing this problem (because it gets caught in a perpetual loop to find sprite zero, which isn't there). This is why it was removed by default in the new version, because it was confusing to users.
      My strong advice is to upgrade to the newest version, especially if you're just starting a project. You can use the same activation, and there are a million upgrades that will be very beneficial to you. Help for older versions you may be able to find on the forums.
