Aww, your Dad 🙌🏼. That guy in the car...bad Karma, it’ll come back to haunt him. I love hikers too. 💗 Thanks for another great video. 💫💫
What wonderful parents you have Jen, they're always there for you. So tragic with all the fires on the West Coast. I hope you are nowhere near any of it. Stay safe out there 🙏
Love you Starburst! Thanks for sharing your hike with us! I cannot believe the rudeness of that driver. Those horses were bombproof. Happy hiking tomorrow!
Amazing job as always babe. :) I’m glad that the bears didn’t get your food!
I am researching the TRT for a future trip. I am reading, monitoring Guthook and of course watching vlogs. This series has been the best I have seen. Entertaining, good footage of the trail and just plan fun. Thank you for sharing your adventure!
What a jerk! Who honks at horses? I mean really? I cannot get enough of those shots of the terrain where you are hiking....beautiful!
yup, not cool. But its not good riding horses either - they weren't born to be slaves to humans.
I had a 4 wheeler driver rev his engine in the the face of my really great Arab and said he didn’t think it was a problem? He was so good, icalmed him, but that is how little people know about horses.
When I got to the Echo Chalet after a single night out at Aloha lake I had the best cookie and cold coffee of my life
People underestimate some good coffee until you've been backpacking for days!
Papa to the rescue - he certainly did come through! Thanks for the road crossing lesson. No more waiting for me, from now on it is walk slowly with oncoming traffic and have a quick finger.
Great fun following you on the trail. What a positive attitude you have. I've been backpacking for many years and now have the joy of taking my grandkids into the wilderness. What a blessing it is for me to see them flourishing and understanding the importance of the natural world. I don't have to tell them anything. They just understand and that brings such nourishment to my soul.
Thank you so much! And that is incredible to hear. I wish I got into backpacking way before I did!
Glad to hear from you on a more "Regular" basis...lol great scenery....great hike...cant imagine where people come from that are always full of hate...couldnt slow down to let horses cross....jeeezz....what a super creep.. .stay safe out there Jen & Dyana !!!
I checked out Dyana's CZcams PNT hike and it was an amazing! She really pulled through doing that trail alone for the most part. You guys are bad-asses! Have fun!
I appreciate your channel. Your PCT videos inspired me to get into backpacking. Found you before Dixie and others LOL. I’m a newbie and hope to do some thru hiking next year. Thanks for the inspiration and realness in all your videos.
Lake of the Woods is a sweet place to camp ... enjoy watching your videos!
Gosh, I would die with all those mosquito bites! How annoying... But just to mention it again: I love the two of you together. You ladies are so much fun!!
I remember Aloha Lake - I lost my first toe nail there. I literally popped off while I was sitting on one of the boulders watching the sunset. I remember all of those super cute cabins along Echo Lake too. I think my favorite part of that whole section was the ice cream I had before heading out on trail. Your videos are giving me all of the PCT feels. Thank you!!
@@JenniferMabus It was so weird - it didn't hurt when the nail came off. It just looked gross, maybe from all the dirt? It feels good to embrace my inner Hiker Trash. What I'd give to be able to go back to Aloha Lake and camp there again. Hopefully one day soon. Next time, I plan on keeping all of my toenails!!
Thank you so much for sharing. I see lots of TRT videos but yours showed a different perspective. BTW. I cant believe what an a-hole that car was!
I’m waiting for the laugh. That up from the gut belly laugh of yours is contagious.
Great way to start to a sunday with one of your videos. Btw, I dont think bushery is a word 🤣🤣🤣
Go Starburst and Diane.
Beautiful hike. I glad you are back on trail. You are so happy. When you did the PCT, I was about a week behind you leaving the chalet, but went down to Emerald Bay, were Eagle falls is. Beautiful section to hike.
Enjoy your week.
I also remember your mom and dad from the auburn theater event for the PCTA
Cheers for using that bear canister the whole way!
After hearing the story of the family who had their 4 hangs Yogie Bear'd I can't help but think that Dyana got lucky with her nonchalant "hangs" on the trip.
Very nice video! Lake of the Woods was my very first backpack trip long long ago.
Enjoyed your video. I do the same I stop turn around when hikers pass. I love hikers and respect one another.
And have a fun time and enjoy.
😃
Great video. My favorite hiking spot in the world. I'm heading up on Monday for my once a year spiritual solo voyage to connect with nature talk with those who I've lost. I saw the trail has been closed for the fires. I just hope they can re-open by tues or wed.
I love my own spiritual outings. And there is some rain in the forecast so let's hope it helps enough to get the fires under control and wind to clear the smoke!
I hiked up to Desolation Valley on this trail in the late 1950s with my late-50s mother and two of her college friends. There were no cabins along the trail beside Upper Echo Lake at that time to my recollection. I recall vividly meeting a much older man, about my present age of late 70s, almost running up the trail, and wondered if I could be doing that at his age. My last hike to Desolation was in 1982, plus one to Eagle Falls Lake (above Emerald Bay) in the early 2000s. As in post to the previous leg, I also vividly recall the odor of the wildflowers. Lots of mint-like smells. I do wish one could bottle that.
That sounds like so many great memories! I wish I could bottle up the smells as well.
Enjoyed this part of the journey. 'Gratz on the Smooth Move! Ya nevah know about those bears. I guess the skeeters didn't carry you off 'cause we have videos 😊
I was going to start from Echo on 8/26 but there were literal hail storms for 2 days there 😂 You never can trust a clear blue sky for long in the mountains!
What a gorgeous section of the trail with spectacular weather. Dyana keeps reminding me of Idina Menzel with a healthy dose of Paula Poundstone in the mix. Both amazing women, as is Dyana. ☺️
Gotta love papa coming threw
@@JenniferMabus I'm so jealous I'm taking care of my dad! I wish he was still taking care of me!
I love Lake Aloha, but I also really like the trail and site where you set up camp at the end of the day. That was a sketchy highway crossing. You guys keep running into the horse lady but I'm surprised she's not way ahead of you since she can cover more ground.
That's so sweet your dad was able to bring you your resupply! Me and my buddies finishing our PCT miles this summer had to buy everything from the chalet store (so we wouldn't have to hitch), and unfortunately our poor GF friend ended up living off 3 bags of chips, avocados, tuna, and cheese for the next 3 days since they were out of a bunch of stuff :/
Oh nooooo! Usually they have more stuff, but because of COVID I think it was a bit diluted.
@@JenniferMabus Yeah, it was a little goofy. But the ladies at the store were super nice! And I guess it was a built-in way to mix up our food choices! We got an awesome photo with 6 bags of chips between the 3 of us, hahaha.
Bear cans are the way to go in Desolation wilderness. You have more weight to carry, but you don't lose your food to bears. The bears near Tahoe are adept at getting at food hanging from trees.
Huh, wonder what they could do/are trying to do to improve safety of that road crossing. I'd be pissed at that guy in the car the rest of the day! Hope you all were able to move on quickly :)
Man your so lucky you got to do this before Tahoe was smoked out. I had to cancel my thru hike for the 14th like 2 days before leaving.
I hate mosquitoes! I can feel them on me while watching you swat at them. I love however this retracing of PCT steps.
When it was 6 days between postings I thought that maybe you got off the trail due to smoke
Stay safe!
I think I have a crush on Dyana !!! Tell that car driver where to go !!! You two girls are doing so good.. Stay safe you two....happy trails
Jennifer, Skin So Soft by Avon is the best mosquito / sand fly / gnat / midge repellent, imo. Avon actually market an insect repellent based on their original SSS product. I haven't tried that because I still have plenty of the original stuff. I've tried it in the Caribbean, N America, Scotland (midges) and Far East where I live and it is efficacious in all of these regions. Smells pleasant as an added bonus.
If it's good against scottish midges than it has to be the holy grail. I'll have to try that stuff since I always suffer like Jen does. I think I've also A+...
Safe Trails & happy hiking
How awful honking at horses and people walking !!! What a wonderful father you have for such a nice resupply!!
I’m surprised at how clear the skies are. I thought for sure it would be hazy from fires.
@ 11:29 It looks like a black bear had a SMOOTH MOVE! 💩💩💩👍
If we look at the PCT videos again, we can see how much the image quality has improved in the TRT videos. It has been worthwhile to carry the weight of the camera, the result is much better. 👍
The Garcia bear canister is the only approved one for Desolation. Saw a bear eatting berries just after the bridge on south end of Echo Lake in '18. Didn't mind carrying it after that. I would have done that same thing as the horse lady. I want to do the TRT some time.
You definitely should, it's beautiful! And where did you see that requirement about the Garcia bear canister? Because what I see online is bear cans OR bear bags are authorized?
I will never forget your Dad telling you that you needed to take a shower and. That he was worried about you returning to regular life after thePCT.
Did you guys go into Echo Chalet? I’m at the very, VERY beginning of planning a thru hike but am wondering how easy it would be to resupply there/what the selection is? The only picture on their Yelp is of ice cream bars lol.
Yes! I went in on the PCT and TRT. Because of COVID, they shut down their sandwich bar. But they still had a lot of snack food! They have some bread and tortillas, cheese, hummus, fresh veggies and fruit, chips, etc.
The Whimsical Woman THANK YOU! I am very new to this and your videos have been so, so helpful! Thank you and I can’t wait to watch the rest of your and Dyana’s TRT adventure! ☺️😎
Lake aloha is my happy place
@@JenniferMabus i know! Lake schmidel, even though way off the beaten path, is so worth it, too.
The poop tastes sweet if it's cat and sour if it's bear. 😉 Your new trail name is......."SMOOTH MOVE". Good huh? Let me know. I really do like you. 😁 Great video.
Glad things moved along for you. Lol. Ya that car, really could have been nicer. So, sad about the families food. Keep trekking.
Just wanted to say hi if you're getting a signal. Wildfire smoke looks choking around the lake. I hope uou and Diane are doing well dealing with it. Be safe, I know you will.
I would be eaten alive too! All I have to do is step outside for 5 min and have like 20 bites on me. So happy you had a ‘smooth move’ 😂
Ive been missin you...what have you and Owen been up to....??
If that driver had spooked the horses some people could have gotten injured.
Omg that poor family. But I kind of laughed too lol. I thought the bear cans were required there?
Hi hello my names mark from England Royal Air Force technician harriers and bomb disposal technician omg ace vlog with you and your friend I love walking hiking in uk I’m going to watch your your whole pct vlog I watched already till your dad left and you hitting the 100 mile marker omg you are so good girl how many vlogs is it ? I’d love to do it but at the moment can’t get into America I waked the north to south rim of Grand Canyon 2 years ago at the end of my Route 66 trip
Wow, the Grand Canyon must have been beautiful! I still haven’t made it there. And thank you! 🙏🏻
I can't find it
Day 5
So my girlfriend and I just rescheduled our trip bc the TRT is closed due to wildfire. How are you still out there??
I have the recording date in each description, but I hike this in the first half of August. I am sorry you had to reschedule!
Thanks for the video! Stay safe and have fun!
I keep forgetting to ask you, what brand of and where did you get your hat?
Of course! And my hat is Arc’Teryx. I linked it in my gear list in the description if interested. :)
@@JenniferMabus Thanks. Just for your info couldn't find the hat on the gear list.
Not foolish ANGELS 😍😙😙😙😘
Glad u got to see ur dad and re-supply! That dumb A#$ in the mustang......I've seen horses spooked by sudden loud noises... that could have ended badly. When u saw the poop on the trail, ur dialogue reminded me of a Cheech & Chong sketch....It revolves around dog poop....and yes, I'm that old! Sorry 'bout the mosquitoes!
Would be nice if they some kind of traffic control or maybe a walk over.
Maybe treat your clothing with permethrin next time. It is a game changer when it comes to mosquitoes.
That black mess kinda looks like Bear 🐻 Scat💩 to me. Best of luck on your trip.🏞
👊😎✌
@@JenniferMabus If you are still hiking up and around Sierra Nevada area just be careful black bear roam the area best thing to do is make lots noise and remember there more scare of you than you are of them. I ran into them a few times backpacking around Yosemite and parts of the Tahoe Rim. I hope you 2 brought bear spray that definitely works and loud noises as well. Once again be safe and enjoy the beautiful Sierra Mountains.✌😎👍

Those cabins around the lake are so cool. So happy for your "Smooth Move" lol. I can't believe the bears got all that hiker food. I hope they don't have to kill those bears like the one's in the Sierra. Bear cans makes sense. I would not be very good at hanging my food. I love watching you two hike. I can't believe that guy honked at HORSES like that, what if he spooked them?! JERK! People act so personally offended if they have to put their foot on the brake. So weird!, How dare you make them move their foot! Sheesh! I wish my state was not on fire, I need some outside time. Those cold beers looked good in that cooler.
😷👍Respect Girls 🙃👌👍👍👍(Polen)✊✌.
Clueless lowlanders speeding in and out of the mountains endangering everyone in their path should be ashamed of themselves. It happens constantly on every Sierra pass and wildlife pay the ultimate price. Also, the campers who lost their food to the bear need to know that they have done irreparable harm and altered that bear's natural behavior forever. The time has come to mandate bear canisters in every part of the Sierra to protect the wilderness experience.
I fully support bear canisters. I don’t understand why the Desolation Wilderness has not made them mandatory like Yosemite.
Pretty soon bear canisters will be required throughout Desolation Wilderness. Rangers really, really hate to shoot bears, just because hikers don’t keep their food from them.
I am surprised they aren’t required already! They should be. That’s why I brought my can over my bear bag because I know all about those stories of people’s food always getting swiped.
Sounds as though people on trail are more respectful than the towns and cities here (UK). I’m so tired of the lack of respect humans have for each other right now, as if wearing masks and keeping your distance in stores etc is a hard thing?!
Trust me outside of nature it’s not like that here. Ignorance is global haha
Alyssa is correct as well. People are still like that here! But out on the trails, I noticed how respectful everyone was!
@@JenniferMabus wish I was living on the trails instead of in an english city right now
I do not believe it!
The car had enough time to stop.
Horn? Very stupid on his part, the horses could have been afraid and made dangerous maneuvers.
Sad to see that there are fools like that around us.
Courtesy is not given to everyone unfortunately :(
@ 6:02 We stop the video for this SPECIAL BULLETIN............. 💩💩💩💩💩💩 👍 💞
This looks like nothing more than a suffer fest. The same company that makes your water filter also mfg's the best bug repellent. Sawyer 90% deet is amazing.

There are reasons seasoned backpackers DONT hike around Tahoe.
Too many people, theres a lot of crime (keep your wallet and car keys with you) overpressured fish, too many rookies, too many day hikers, especially those who are way underprepared
I did the PCT in 2016. By far the parts near SLT had the rudest, least experienced hikers. People shouted insults at me from cars, no one knew hiking etiquette (uphill has right of way), and overall ridiculous backpackers with gigantic antique framed packs. Maybe it's just the destination's repute for gambling/partying in the summer that leads to this. Beautiful area but lame humans.
Thank you horse lady. You're a boss!
She totally is!!
