In this video, Patrick Hall of Fstoppers compares the effects a cheap small "strip box" to an expensive strobe setup to see which one creates a more aesthetic look for a portrait. - Jak na to + styl

sweet jesus , could the model have been more depressed!
When it comes to lighting people keep pushing expensive studio lights for video and photography. Quite often I find you can get similar and occasionally better lighting using cheap household and work lights.
Most of us viewers are hobbyists or work for smaller independent studios. Knowing about the cheaper options like this is very helpful.
Thank you.
$18, $40, $60 - the price of those Ikea lights keeps going up! Didn't realize inflation had gotten so bad!
Ha it's Ikea, of course the light itself is $18 but in order to plug it in you gotta buy the power adapter and then the cable to connect the two! -P
Wow Patrick, this looks great, I might buy 1 or 2 (or 5, lol) of these. Very handy for video work too. to place in backgrounds etc.
Model after IKEA light: "Can I see the finished look?"
Patrick: "Sure, but it's actually Swedish..."😆
“Yeah you can see them but first have you tried the Swedish meatballs in the cafe?” -P
@@FStoppers the joke is that finished sounds like Finnish … for Christ’s sake…
Amazing! What a great idea. I've been looking for a way to get some decent Headshot / Portrait lighting kit on the cheap.
Another great video 👍🏽
I've found myself looking for some ways to shoot photos of my knives that I make, but not for a lot of money. This is making me think I'll be hitting up Harbor Freight for their wide selection of small LED job lights. Good stuff!
Interesting, thanks! Not so sure about the catchlights though with the IKEA setup!
Do you prefer Martin’s catchlights? They are super crazy looking! -P
so sad you can't get a $18 lens to make the pictures look this amazing!
hmm you can
What is the IKEA light name, please?
Now test it using the actually 2500 dollar light not just a modelling light
If this was attached (Velcro/double sided taped) inside an appropriate size cardboard box with the end cut out and white cloth/tissue on the end to soften the light it might reduce hotspots and produce better catchlights...just a thought. You could use a similar approach and use higher wattage led standard light, using a different shaped box, with fabric to soften the light(DIY softbox).
The point was NOT to use soft light. I want a thin, long hard light exactly like it is. I think the catch lights are pretty cool. If you look at Martin Schoeller’s work, he sometimes has some crazy catchlights with a ring flash, beauty dishes and soft boxes all in one setup. -P
@@FStoppers 👍True. I just thought I'd add the other options...good for different outcomes.
Great video
I'm surprised you didn't mention this: what's the CRI on the IKEA cabinet light? CRI is critical for commercial work--but you knew that. Thanks.
Yeah I’m not sure what it is. If it’s below 90 then yeah it’s pretty much crap but I’m finding more and more leds now have great CRI ratings. I’ll see if I can find that spec on the ikea page. -P
Great but it your subject has in imperfection’s on their skin I doubt the light would be as useful. One of the benefits of a larger/defused light is it wraps around removing micro contrast.
1:58
The 5mm at the end do nothing, the 4m in the beginning can make a huge difference. A little disingenuous but I get if Tamron made you say it.
What is the speed? Aperture? ISO?
Very cool😁
I figured you were going to throw the light in the softbox lol gaffer's tape and go!
Ha no, I wanted the light even thinner! -P
Nice, do you have a product name or product number of the Ikea light?
It’s shown at the beginning of the video. Mittled or something like that -P
this video should be sponsored by Ikea lol
I think Anna would look astonishing even with 10-cent candle from the church store. 😆😆😆 Just jack up your ISO.
As they say, light is light. The profoto is much softer given its size.
Yes, large soft light is relatively easy to find in the photo world. Narrow but small light like this isn’t as common.
Softbox for me. Doesn't even need to be an expensive one
What's the name of the lamp?
It’s show at the front of the video. Mitset or something random like that. -P
I win HSOTW on Peter's Headshot Crew using triangle setup build on Talia 400 LEDs (60$ each). Knowing how to work with lights and knowing what you want to achieve solve problems of being on the budget. But proper quality stuff i alaways great way to go!
Is that lens for Nikon as well
Only Sony at the moment -P
It is rumoured that the new Nikon Z 28-75 is licensed from Tamron
but with the 18$ light you get a vertical line in the eyes
.
Yeah that’s part of the look. I like it, you could easily photoshop the shape differently if you want. -P
@@FStoppers yeah maybe its a photographer thing, people wont even notice ;)
The Ikea light blows out the tip of her nose.
Wouldn't a better comparison be a purpose-made continuous light for photography vs. a household lamp? Judging the performance of a modeling light wasn't the point of this video....
Not sure I understand. The modeling lamp and the flash produce the exact same light quality once they are inside a modifier. Using strobe only helps over power the sun/ambient light or helps freeze motion. Other than that, the differences are prob indistinguishable -P
Yeah it was more a comparison between the softbox and the Ikea light
Tbf the only way to mess a pic of that chick is to take it with the lens cap on
This reminds me of a meme I saw of a cup once. The cup was worth $5. But the same cup with an Apple logo was worth $500. Go figure🤷♂
Well to be fair the Ikea light can't pop any flash and is worthless outside in the sun. -P
@@FStoppers Good point. I didn't even think of that.
19 oz means nothing to me, and the rest of the world. Could you please speak metric?
THE PROFOTO IS NOT BEAN TO USE AS VIDEO LIGHT! YOU PAY FOR THE STROBE AN LIGHT QUALITY! BAD VIDEO!
