    Did this type of work @ night shift for 3 years . It takes its toll on you trust me. But with the right staff you’re fine…. But the Uber life is so much better 😎

    • @blakasmurf
      @blakasmurf Před rokem +2

      Hey bro, any more detail. I'm about to start nights, want to know what to expect. When you say takes a toll is mentally, physically?

    • @christiangonzales3642
      @christiangonzales3642 Před rokem +19

      @@blakasmurf I know exactly what he means. Night shift with this type of work will take a toll on you both mentally and physically.
      First off, as an order selector you are being timed on your picks, so mentally you have to be alert throughout the whole shift whether 12 to 16 hour shifts. I'm not joking about those hours because you will hit that often. I started off as a selector in a cold storage facility picking items and the whole staff felt drained because we had to keep moving and never knew when we would leave since the shift was not complete until the orders for the day have been selected by everyone, so you will have your stragglers who will keep everyone from leaving and picking up his slack.
      Then if you were super fast they will keep you to finish other extra work. So there is no incentive for being fast but being acknowledged by management as the top picker and making you enemy number one from the competition.
      Then you will have to return to work the next day with barely 4 hours of sleep after working 16 hours. Oh, and you have to work weekends. At least 6 days a week with one day off. Lol no work life balance there. You will live life working and not actually living with your family.
      Money was great due to the overtime but what are you gonna spend it on? Your healthcare due to your sleepless nights and stress! Also, overtime means higher taxes on your checks, so you're slaving for work and not actually working.
      If you're young you will think it's all great having so much money but as you keep working in such a depressing environment it will hit you physically and you will start feeling a lot of headaches and back pains. Trust me, lifting cases like that everyday will wake you up one day to see the bigger picture.
      This is repetitive work and you will start thinking about your life while you work. It will get mind numbingly boring and tedious.
      Your coworkers will definitely talk shit about you and everyone else around them, as you will them. You will see once you get used to warehouse environments, it's just like that in this field.
      If you want to start working as a selector then it's ok in order to build your wealth, but use the opportunity to build your resume for better opportunities out there that will compell you to use your creative thinking more.
      The trades are an excellent option like plumbing and electrical or automotive and IT. That's what I did and studied CNC operation and now work as a fabricator for engineering parts that encourages me to use my problem solving for rewarding results.
      Ultimately, don't be like the old heads who've worked in the warehouse all their life only to look and act hella depressed and bully the younger cats.

    sometimes you'd have to do it with a bad pallet truck which made the weight twice as heavy to pull in a warehouse twice this size
    and unloading shipping containers full of wine by hand 3-4 a day on your own , no pallets on those containers just boxes and crates of wine stacked

    So much bantering in the comment section of people that chose warehouse jobs. The only advice I really have is GO TO COLLEGE. Go to college, and you'll avoid being scammed into being legalized slave labor for the rest of your life. These brain-dead roles are for those who only have very basic job skills and no greater ambitions in life. Or ex-cons that did time in prison and are attempting to get back into the workforce. I chose to further my education after high school. Got my degree in science, and now I'm a full-time laboratory research technician that sees more money in one day by preforming phlebotomy and conducting case studies on animal behaviorisms, compared to what anyone in a warehouse gets in a single week moving boxes from one end of a building to another. So, it's pretty obvious what the greater decisions in life are when it comes to a job vs. an actual career. McDonald's isn't a career no matter how much they try to trick people into thinking it is, and neither is Amazon (unless you're the franchise owner or CEO of either). If you're a high school dropout that can barely read and write, then companies like this and many others don't need to give a rats ass about valuing you as an employee. And believe me when I say: (they don't).
    How much you get out of life depends on how much effort you put into it. So don't be lazy. Don't be a fuck-up. (Stay. In. School).

      @Alex Lin well, I too struggled with learning disabilities. I had a very mild form of autism along with pervasive developmental disorder. But that didn't stop me from taking on the Sciences. Although I suppose things don't always go the same for everyone. Most people can't become astronauts anyway because once people get into the role of Space Science, they don't retire anytime soon. There are far and few job opportunities in things like that and oceanography. Those are very hard careers to get and once someone does land that sort of career, they hang onto it until they retire.

      College is a scam. This is reality. Your job is some specialized stuff with the pay equivalent of owning a business. Being a worker is different from owning a business and both have pros and cons. If you know what you are doing in any field you will never work a day in your life.
