SENA SMH5 Battery Diagnosis and REPLACEMENT!

- Today I diagnose and replace the battery in my SENA SMH5 Bluetooth Headset giving this little COM UNIT a new lease on life! The unit wasn't holding a charge, wasn't connecting to my phone via bluetooth and the power light was blinking between re and blue!

I came up on 2 SMH5s from retired riders. One still had some juice, and the other one was completely dead. I came across your video, and it helped me a lot. The thing that took the longest was getting the batteries. The first package got lost. Amazon sent me a replacement package...then both of them arrived, so now I have spare batteries on hand along with the replacements. The switch out was as easy as you showed. I haven't slapped these suckers on the helmets yet, but they're in a much better state than they were a month ago.
Sucks you had to wait so long ro the battery but awesome that you have it ready for more miles!

Thanks for the video. Replaced my battery today. Will see if performance improves. Mine wasn't "terrible" but had definitely experienced shorter and shorter standby and talk time. But, hey....I got nearly 10 years out of the OEM battery!
10 years is a good haul! Hope it gets another decade of use for ya!

First of all, Thank You for this Video! I have the same headset and noticed on my last few rides that, after a full charge, the battery would die after an hour's use. Your link connected me to a very affordable replacement battery. Are you an affiliate? If so, how would I make sure you get credit? Also where did you find the double sided tape? I have some but it is not robust enough for this application (it's for photographic mounting and posterboard).
You are very welcome! I am not affiliated with Sena, this was all just to fix issues I had and I wanted to share. The tape I used is Gorilla Double Sided tape and I picked it up at Walmart. Found it near the paint section in my local Walmart but you should be able to find it at Hone Depot or any other big box type store. Good luck with it!

I'm not sure, I only know of the battery that I found which is mentioned in the video fitting. Hope you get yours back up to speed or already have.

Not sure, but you can cross reference that in a few different places with a quick search of the web.
Lol! As I was thinking: "Hm, not using a torque wrench" you responded with the torque specs comment. Your mind reading capabilities are scary.
Scary and debilitating as I haven't actually slept in years because I hear the thoughts of anyone wonders about or judges someone for not using a torque wrench or stating the torque specs as soon as the bolt is shown on screen.
Opened up and replaced my 20s battery, tries to boot but shuts off. Same after new battery. I found a second battery behind the board, 3.7 100mh. Wondering if maybe the second battery is bad. Ive searched the interwebs and back, no mention of the second battery?
Sadly I have no experience with the more advanced 20s. I know that they are a bit more complicated, so your guess is as good as mine in if the secondary battery is a fail pint as well. Wish I could be more help.

Do you have better battery life between charges with the replacement battery?
I do! I never got more than 3 hours out of the OEM battery, but now I 5-6 hours run time out of one charge.
@@LoneWolferGarage I used to get probably 8 hours out of mine, but now it's down to 40ish minutes. You can get a 550mAh replacement now so I'm hoping I can get a bit more use out of it once I do the swap.
I never got that kind of time out of the OEM battery, that's kind of amazing. And I didn't know they had a 550 available, but I am curious if that may be slightly wider which may cause a fitment issue in the housing. Probably not though as my OEM was a bit bloated and still fit in there!
@@LoneWolferGarage it's possible, but it is billed as a direct replacement for the smh5, so it's worth the $13 to try
