Trent gave his permission for Johnny Cash to cover his song so it was not stolen. Even he says that Cash did a better job. Cash had many hits during his career this is just one of them.
Thats why Johnny was known as "classic country's one of the all time greats " but, that's your opinion .... you are allowed to have !! Not pathetic though ... I guess you can have that name for saying that ;)
Johnny Cash became a committed Christian later in life so I doubt he would have used that one lyric - thus his using "crown of thorns" as a reference to Christ's crucifixion. And yes, his version was MUCH better - much more melodic - and got the point across equally well.

Cash ver is completely stale without any emotions to it except sadness -.-. he basically just stole the song to make it about himself as the selfish prick/junkie he was during his whole life. crown of thorns is the most cliche sentence he could've translated it to. that didn't even fit very well with the lyrics. crown of shit is something that represents alot more and alot less generic junk cash made up the song to be about.
Not saying that Johnny Cash made a bad song, but seriously, nobody will ever surpass the raw and sincere emotion that Trent captures in this song.
Johnny Cash made it about a man looking back on life. Trent made it about how his addiction hurt all around him.
Every version Trent does of this song is so touching & So Real- Thank you

Johnny cash did it way better... empire of "dirts" and crown of "shit" i mean how lyrically moving is that. So stupid in word choice.
