how is this an illusion? seems like harmonization across a stereo spectrum to me

Because,our brains percieve what it wants to,instead of what's real.

@@daniellbondad6670 kinda?? You can definitely make out that there's not just like a straight scale being played, but any musician (especially one that's written music) knows that your ears are gonna kinda pick up on structures and not just the "audio" coming out

But if the sounds are coming into different ears, shouldn't we expect them to come from two different sources in the world? In that case, it does not make sense to perceive it as one scale.
