- Great Peter of York Minster (North tower) being rung manually by Erik Loggen. September 22, 2013, ~0950am. In the beginning of the video one can hear the change ringing on 12 bells in the South tower of York Minster. At the end, when the change ringing has come back to rounds, Great Peter joins. For the occasion of the visit of the Utrechtse Klokkenspel Vereniging, the bell is rung manually by Erik Loggen, with some help by David Potter.
The recording is in mono, because the other channel saturated too much. Although the sound recorder was not in the bell chamber, but in the adjacent stair case, slightly behind the central pillar, the recording saturated. Fortunately one of the channels is still acceptable.
Filmed in the ringing chamber by Ralph Luthart, filmed simultaneously in the bell chamber by myself.

Many thanks to David Potter, who gave us access to the bell chamber for this occasion, and to Ralph Luthart for putting his film at our disposal to make this compilation.
Dank aan David Potter om ons toegang te verlenen tot de klokkenzolder en aan Ralph Luthart om ons zijn film ter beschikking te stellen voor deze compilatie. - Hudba
hypnotizing. I swear I could hear music coming out of that bell.
Yes, that is what bells are supposed to do: make music.
+Thierry Pauwels +1 to that.
.
It's because there are bells in the other tower
Beautiful bell with an awesome sound!!
clean looking compared to the great paul
Prachtig filmpje, Thierry! Dank je wel! En jij ook bedankt Erik!
Is je achternaam echt "Achternaam?"
Fantastic! Great workout! That is a Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig Bell! Thank You.
Excellent video, very well made :-)
I rang at York minster in August 2000 and saw great Peter but it wasnt rung.
She is an amazing bell in part due yo the hatmonic tuning.
I have seen Great Paul twice, one in 1963 when it was rung manually and i mafe a recording in 2000.
Whilst it is way heavier it predates the simpson harmonic tuning that Taylors adopted in the end of the 19th century.
All thanks to this video,I went to do this!
How impressive to ring a bell weighing 10 3/4 tons!
Thanks for video
you must also listen to the carillon it is beatiful and it is situated in the same tower where the 12 bells are
Yes, I have posted a film of the carillon on CZcams: czcams.com/video/sE5LPkdmpBA/video.html. Unfortunately not the best sound quality, because I had to record it from the street.
@@thierrypauwels Why complaining? It sounds really good and cool!
Omg I want to ring that bell
so do i and i might get a ring on it on my birthday
I love big bells
Bedankt voor de grote Petrus! Ik hoorde de andere luidklokken op de achtergrond.
Very Nice
Your name is in the Description. Are you the one that rung it, or is it a different Erik Loggen?
I hear the other bells in the background.
I once got to ring a small church bell but this..... this is way different
wow
Wow
I was once chased my one of the minster constables all round york minster and this bell was ringing during the chase
whaaaaaaaaaat
Oh Realy
@@chix0616 yep 100 percent
Great Peter so heavy
right
What is that note?
e flat.
@@thierrypauwels I Swear It Sounds Like A D.
To me it sounds really like a e flat. Compare with Savinienne, czcams.com/video/XYpxawFSh6o/video.html, which is clearly lower, and still slightly higher than a d.
Definitely an e flat. I thought it was a G sharp at first due to the harmonics. Just like Big Ben sounds like an A bell when it's actually e.

Was this in england?
Yes, York is in England.
is that the only bell in the south tower or is there other bells in there?
It is in the North tower. The South tower contains the peal for ringing. The North tower contains Great Peter, and as far as I remember also bells for chiming the quaters and the hours (not sure they are Westminster chimes).
I dont think it is westminster chimes
so im saying that is that the only bell in the north tower or is there other bells in the north tower besides in the south tower
@@kristiebeals3 yes there is 6 or so bells used for the clock chimes and great peter
that was loud from yum yum kimbo

I thought the bell at our city hall was big!
I do not know the bell at your city hall. Maybe it is big. But this bell is very big.
How tall is the bell ?
I guess of the order of 7 or 8 feet.
Thanks for the info
Guys did you hear that others bells?
These are the 12 bells for change ringing in the other tower. Great Peter joins only at the end of the change ringing.
In the second scene why is that rope in the back ground moving up and down?
I had not noticed it (I was filming the bell itself). Probably it is the other end of the rope that comes down from the other side of the wheel of the bell. I notice it moves up when the rope in the foreground moves down and vice-versa. Maybe it is to allow two ringers to pull the rope ? In the Domtower in Utrecht they have the same for the larger bells, to allow more ringers to pull.
Thierry Pauwels Je pense que cette cloche est retro-lance. Comme Hosanna, Great George et Great Paul. Je sonne les cloches aussi, le change ringing. C'est cool.
Ringer Jake
??
JB Crafter I lived in France for 10 years. I am fluent in French.

Ok. =D
I FREAKING LOVE CHURCH BELLS, HOW CAN I GET ONE OF MY OWN????????
Paying about £5000 to John Tayloy's bell foundry or Whitechapel bell foundry
moncky2000 One of the size of Great Peter is probably more like £200,000.
Why dont you simply learn to ring it is such a fantastic hobby and to be honest is secular. It just so happens that bells are in churches
Kamaal Wellens MEEE SAMMME
Same
Yup that's GREAT PETER the heaviest bell in Britain.
Definitely not the heaviest. Big Ben is heavier, Great Paul in London is heavier, the Olympic Bell is heavier, and Great George in Liverpool is heavier.
No it is not the heaviest like the other guy said big Ben is heavier
seeing the bell & ppl rining it loooks odd too me as im not used to seeing video's with whats happening below & above

Sounds like the 12 change ringing bells at the beginning were ringing bristol surprise maximus
Sounds like royal to me. Unless the 2 trebles were there but barely audible
@@nord1486 it’s Maximus
its just taller than panay bell
That looks like a heavy Bell

Sound Great Peter nice together Savoyarde Sacre Coueur Paris Monmarte
why does Great Peter's clapper move like that, almost by itself
That is because of the wings at the top of the clapper.
Its called a "counterbalanced" clapper..... common fitment to huge swing chimed bells
It's moving with the same speed of the bell because is its attached to the bell
Great Bell. Pitty about the name, should change it to Great Harry.
Why?
It must be really heavy to ring lol
Not really. If you imagine that this bell is rung by one single person, while twelve persons were needed to ring the Pretiosa in Köln, which has a similar weight. And in the middleages, when the bearings were not so good, they needed 24 persons to ring the Pretiosa.
+Thierry Pauwels Pretiosa is much higher pitched, though.
it's like 10 tonnes so yeah
I rang this bell when i was 15
Bedankt voor de grote Petrus! Ik hoorde op de achtergrond de andere luidklokken
thats a huge bell. 25 times bigger then my yellow lab
Darren A was it loud
4th biggest bell in Britain
+smith23 Is it then the biggest bell in Britain outside London ? The olympic bell, Great Paul and Big Ben are bigger anyway. How about Liverpool ?
+Thierry Pauwels OK, the 5th biggest. I forgot about the Olympic bell. Great George of Liverpool comes between Great Paul and Big Ben
+smith23 What happened to the Olympic bell in fact ? Is it still used ?
How did they even ring this it’s so heavy
*It’s also creating music as I type this comment ;-;*
They can ring it because the bell is almost balanced. Bells with a straight yoke are much harder to ring. You would need 5 or 6 people for a bell with that size and a straight yoke. The music you hear is probably the bells in the other tower which were already ringing for some time.
@@thierrypauwels Hey! Big fan. How do you get a place to go and ring that bell? I am a bell ringer and would like to give great peter and also great George a try
@@kaidenmccreath4269 I have no idea how to get the possibility to ring the bell. We were in a group and it was arranged that one person from our group got the permission to ring the bell, and I could then get a permission to film (and yes, I would have liked to ring it myself also). I think you should contact some local people of York minster.
@@thierrypauwels OK thanks. Such a big fan of yours though
