Founded in 1570 by Juan de Ladrilleros, Buenaventura today is a bustling metropolis of 375,000. On Colombia's Pacific coast, the city boomed after the opening of the Panamá Canal in 1914. Today, some 70 percent of Colombia's exports, including almost all of its coffee, pass through the port. The city is also a major fishing port, tourist destination and gateway to other destinations in the Colombian Pacific littoral.
