How to Make a Rabbit Stick or Primitive Throw Stick

- This is a "How To" video on MY method of rabbit stick or primitive throw stick fabrication. This is a demonstration of a mid-range and mid-use stick being created for survival and primitive living.
Rabbit sticks have been used by all different cultures thorough time and geography. The land and the individual creator determine the style of stick. MY style is based of resources and the tight, rocky forests of the Rocky Mountains.
Quick Rabbit Sticks can be created by picking up a stick and just giving it a toss at an intended target. More aerodynamic and long term rabbit sticks require much more time and tools to create. The stick demonstrated in this video is a "go-between" quick stick and a long term hunting rabbit stick.
Some rabbit sticks can fly in excess of 200 yards, while others can fly just a few feet. This is based on design and resources.

Had the pleasure of meeting Donny several months back when he stayed with my son for a week. He and my son were using their throwing sticks and Donny had his take off into a rough patch of area on my son's property and it appeared to have been swallowed up by the brush. While at my son's this past Monday I said , Let's go looking for that throwing stick because the underbrush is dying and we might find it. Sure enough, 5 minutes into the hunt I found it. Now I ain't gonna lie I tossed it a few times myself because It's not every day you get to handle and toss a Quality made tossing stick that is owned by your favorite ALONE participant. Well I had my son take my photo holding it and pointing to it like, Hey Donny !!! Loose something lol. Well I'm HAPPY to say it will be shipped back to Colorado to its rightful owner very soon. Hopefully He can make it back to Ohio again soon and Just maybe I can toss it again, lol.
That sound after the throw makes this all the more satisfying 👌🏻

I’ve been watching your CZcams shorts a little here and there. I’m watching Alone season 6 right now and I couldn’t get the idea of learning to carve a throwing stick out of my head, so I searched it on CZcams. I saw this video, saw the thumbnail, saw the channel name, remembered the shorts, waiiiiiiiiit [click sounds in head] OH ITS THE SAME GUY!!!
I then saw that this video was already chillin in my watch later playlist. It has been moved to sooner in my watching queue.
I instantly loved all the shorts a lot more.

@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks The original concept of Rabbit Stick morphed into a flea market atmosphere for selling ferro rods , mora knifes . Most of the customer herd have no desire to sit through an actual workshop showing primitive skills .

Hey man like the work. I'm from Australia and just wanted to let you know that the rabbit stick is called a boomerang. Aboriginals used them to take out kangaroos rabbits birds and other small game...again like what you do it's unique and it's nice to see someone live of the land and appreciate it..
If you make it on more of an angle you can make it to return to you if it missed the target. I also left out they also used them to fight other tribes
They also have fishing ones.
Yeah but the australian aboriginals call it boomerang, but they were used all over the world in past. I know boomerang is australian icon though. Its really just hunting throwing stick even egyptian mummies were sometimes buried with them. There are even ones carved out of mammoth ivory i think found in europe, and also native americans used sticks like these to the modern times. I at least think the returning ones are more like toy. Any projectile weapon you want to fly as straight as possible to hit moving targets with, but the returning sticks goes in arcs basicly. Maybe they could be used for big masses of flying birds idk.
Its kinda like everyone in english calls the spear lever stick thing atlatl because some native americans called it that, but it existed all over the world including in australia. I think some people also thinks boomerangs as the returning ones only

There werent any rabbits in australia til the white men bought them from europe. That was 30,000 years after the boomerang appeared

Aboriginal boomerang are exactly this. Everyone thinks that a boomerang comes back to you, but as a tool 99%of the time they were throwing it at small game so towards the ground. So it hit the ground. It wasn't coming back. I love the old throw sticks, cus it takes determination to succeed in a hunt. Love your channel donny!

Great video! That’s almost like the original Aboriginal Kylie. I’m trying to look around for branches or fallen trees to make some like that. I’ve done a couple of boomerang style throwing sticks that fly at least 70 or so feet. But if you fine tune a Kylie well, you could get a range of 90 yards or more. 👍
I have all different types of sticks with different range capabilities...I think that is the fun part to see what you can make out of a stick or branch!
A "Kylie "is a returning boomerang, not a throwing stick.
Would splitting the branch be better than shaving off one side? Obviously it would still need smoothing.

Is it legal to hunt with one of these? I know in a survival situation it wouldn't matter but practice makes for survival so just curious.
If one were to season a throwing stick what would be the best method to do so?
I live in southern Illinois Williamson county in the USA. What kinda rock can use for makin arrowheads and spears? I'm gonna try to make a rabbit stick a little bit later
Addictive show, yes many Australians make trational throw sticks and boomerang's its the roo fat and bee's wax thats the hard to find, plus you rub it with a smooth rock to a refective finish. Like a plane wing, the difference in traditional boomerang and decor one is plywood ones are to sell to holliday makers, Australian hardwood ones have lasted 40000yrs even more. Museums date them bucause of this, definitely paleo area. People evoled out of Africa but tools evoled from out of Australia, Hypothesis/theory.

What is the difference in throwing sticks between those that are for longer distances, and those that are for shorter distances? How much difference between larger and smaller prey?
You should learn how to make an Aboriginal boomerang same concept as this but thrown properly they come back amazing bit of engineering from my ancestor's from over 60thousand years ago
I'm guessing you have to practice alot to get accurate enough to hit anything. Looks like the animal would have a good chance of avoiding being hit by the moving stick. It just looks like it travels kind of slow. But I'm willing to give it a try.
I've made that mistake myself _many_ times in bird photography - the bird is flying _so_ slow. And it isn't. Speed is deceptive.

The big long range ones were made to hunt kangaroos. These are flying baseball bats and they're awesome
I've watched Australians hand make them , and they would split it in half and make 2 out of one because you would want a flat side
Question: what is the benefit of a rabbit stick as opposed to throwing a rock?
Great question. Honestly...both will work. A rabbit stick or throw stick covers greater surface area upon impact. With proper airfoil design a rabbit stick can be thrown of excess of 150 yards. Stocks go farther, straighter and are more accurate. Sticks can also be used against large game targeting the legs causing a break and immobility of the prey.

We have lots of evidence for the what in the form of artifacts, but your experience actually using them is invaluable to understanding why things were the way they where!

How would you season this so it won't crack?
Season the wood prior to carving. for the best results you would cut the stave to 6" longer on each end and then seal the ends with glue(or pitch), and let it dry slowly through its bark for 6months or more. That would produce a very hard and stable piece to work from.
