    For propagation, I cut a bunch of the growing tips off, about 3-4" pieces, cut the bottom couple pearls off and start them in a shot glass of water, they'll start to grow roots after a week or so. I'll wait a few weeks and plant those. I plant them back in the same pot to thicken it up...Then I cut some more tips and start another batch.

  • @cherylanderson3340
    @cherylanderson3340 Před 2 lety +1

    This was very informative. Those flowers are so unique. Before this, I hadn't known that they flower. After being intrigued by this plant for decades, I'd never had one, until a couple years ago, when I found a pot of String of Pearls in a small shop.
    When we got home, I'd put it on a plant table that sits about 2' away from an unobstructed, North-East exposure. There, plants get the low angle of the 1st rays of sun until maybe 10:30 to 11:00 AM - when the sun passes over the house.
    I'd planned on it growing large, & of rooting many cuttings & having several of these plants around. Knowing it would want a bright spot without a lot of direct exposure to start, with summer coming, I'd thought I'd found a great spot. So it would have more light, I set it into a small, footed ceramic planter I'd had, which raised it up an inch or so.
    It seemed the perfect spot to let it get bigger. In the meantime, it looked perfect there on my big oval plant table. The beads had a few inches to hang down before draping themselves onto the table, with a few strands being longer, spilling over the edge.
    Then I noticed many of the peas were missing. I saw nothing on the rug or the table. It was a head scratcher. It took me a while to realize that it was being eaten by at least one mouse. I moved it but wish I'd put it up higher. Then I'd taken the last section & placed it on the soil, in a little circle. It ate that too, though I'd put it up on top of the microwave.
    I bought some mouse traps.
    Question: When you showed the section with multiple roots, I wondered if they'd grown those roots while still attached to the pot, & just hanging down, or did that section have ground contact?

    • @annieschreck7938
      @annieschreck7938 Před 2 lety +2

      Well, that is the first time I've heard of a mouse going after someone's String of Pearls! And good question. Yes, the plant can sprout roots midway along its stem even before a cutting is taken and even if the stem is not touching the ground. They're such incredible plants!

    • @cherylanderson3340
      @cherylanderson3340 Před 2 lety

      @@annieschreck7938 Thank you for the reply. Now they've completely eaten 2 more plants - new ones I'd treated myself to, a new to me type of Aralia & another I'd never seen before - a succulent, & now working on my 3rd new one - a big coleus!
      They're also digging in the soil, so making quite a mess I keep on having to clean up!
      Too bad I still haven't had the stomach to use the mouse traps I've bought, since I am lot looking forward to tossing the mangled mice into the trash. And some lose a limb but get away, leaving a bloody mess & then go off & die somewhere, so I'm considering other methods.
      Years ago, I used a Have a Heart trap, & would then drive them out to the woods to release them.
      Nope - not this time. There's a sticky paper a friend used & swears by it, but they're stuck & still alive so ... ick.

    Thanks for all your advices. This plant looks really good but till I see your video I never challenge to grow one because I was afraid to be not able to keep it alive. For sure, I’ll try it soon because now I’m more confident, thanks to you. (Sorry for my English if I made mistake)

      Thank you so much, Alex. That's exactly why we make these videos and it's so nice to hear. Good luck with your String of Pearls, you got this! And your English is great, by the way!
