When these two behemoths pulled into LaGrange Road westbound that day they buried everything within a two block radius with smoke and steam. I'll never forget it. It's shameful there are no CB&Q O-5 or S-4 steamers in operating condition today. I also remember guys with microphones mounted on poles while riding in gondola cars to capture these sounds. God bless 'em.

The recording from IC tower is my favorite part.
There is not to much film footage or audio recordings in Mendota.
I work at the railroad museum in Mendota which has an HO scale replica of the Mendota train yards as they looked in the late 30-early 40s.

One of my favorite steam records! Cool hearing that Op at Mendota Tower clear the train w/the Train Dispatcher!

Interesting. In 1959, the 5632 ran a doubleheader trip between Chicago and Galesburg, IL with 2-10-4 Colorado type No. 6315. During the trip, No. 6315 lost both of its eccentric rods and could not continue under its own power. No. 5632 pushed No. 6315 the rest of the way to Galesburg while also pulling the excursion train. (both were scrapped prior to 1969)

@@tom_tractor_trailerscotrai2809 5632's story is such a tragedy, it shows how Anti-steam railroad successors became at the 60-era.

@@AdmiralColdhead what about 6315? It was the other 2-10-4 that ran on an excursion, besides 610

@@tylergreen4843 On the excursion in this video, 6315 bent both eccentric rods, damaging it horribly which spelled the end for 6315. It was pushed by 5632 for the rest of the journey.

@@tom_tractor_trailerscotrai2809 5632 was scrapped sometime after November of 1972, I have a photo of it in the scrapyard dated as such.

I had this recording, sadly my first wife slashed it with a Stanley knife, Before anyone asks, It was most definetly grounds for divorce.
