- The Rippingtons are a Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz group, founded by guitarist and composer Russ Freeman in 1985. The group has passed the thirty year mark, and continues to innovate. Under Freeman's production, the group has released 22 albums, all of which have attained top 5 Billboard status, with 5 of them reaching #1. Their debut album, "Moonlighting", which Jazziz magazine has called "the number one most influential contemporary jazz album of all time."
The group's influences are wide-ranging, from instrumental pop, to rock, to world music, to EDM, to R&B. Some artists having recorded with the Rippingtons include Arturo Sandoval, Jeffrey Osbourne, Kirk Whalum, Kenny G, Dave Grusin, the late Joe Sample, Dave Koz, David Benoit, Patti Austin, Peter White, Rick Braun, Zak Wylde, and many more. The Rippingtons were chosen Best Group 2000 by Billboard BET, and Best Group 2 years in a row, 2001 and 2002 by the Oasis Awards, in addition to Achievement in Video 2001.
My favorite smooth jazz group of all time...never, ever tire of them...ever...so classically timeless...

I saw them live in 1994 at the Star Light Theater in Kansas City Mo. what a great performance! I am sad to hear that Russ Freeman has retired but their music is still out!
My childhood memories. I listened to you guys as a child and now my children listen to you too. God bless

Same man, some of my earliest memories are of the Rippingtons playing in the house
Ahh so. Found them on Tourist in Paradise, reversed to Moonlighting, then got every release since. Timeless.
Russ Freeman is one of the most prolific writers of this age...Some of his stuff is similar, but I never cared. Yum.
OMG, Kit. My feelings exactly. Saw then live decades ago. Will stay with me forever.
This music takes you to places you've never been to and places yet to be seen. Pure magic. Russ we love you. You and Russell Ferante are my favorites.
i’ve been listening since 92
i can say i hear their songs literally every day
See them live in person if you can in your lifetime
great band , Russ Freeman is the best !!!
Russ Freeman is incredibly talented and versatile. Over the years I have seen Rippingtons members come and go and yet all of them were excellent musicians. I understand his concept to keep the Rippingtons fresh and vibrant and to keep the band going and going. This is why he relates to keeping the Rippingtons brand intact, rather than suffering a breakup like the Beatles. Another one of my all time favorites. He holds it together....... till today.
While listening to his music, I am fascinated, it just amazes me how he conceives and arranges all the melodies.ie. Snowbound. He can go from Funk, to latin to classical to fusion to modern smooth jazz with ease!
Guy is simply a musical genius!
I have the entire collection! To say the least, it's one of my most prized possessions. Music is indeed food for the Soul. Thanks Russ and The Rippingtons.
Could not agree with you more. I own most of their albums and listen to them far more than any other albums I own.
Agree
I could not agree, more!!!
This music simply moves me like no other......that's the test. If it doesn't make you feel, then it goes on the scrap heap. A 1% for sure......

25年前にこのバンドに出会えて本当に良かったと思う。
Found them on Seattle radio back in the 80’s..Changed my life (and musical tastes) forever!
Russ Freeman is an absolute genius. Highly underrated and just shines whenever you watch him play. Choices are tremendous and it brings me right back to a younger time in my life. Thank you for sharing this with the world and continuing to play.
Indeed, I had the AWESOME pleasure of seeing them perform live in Mobile, AL back in 2000 at the Saenger Theater and when I tell you these guys NAILED every song they performed with FLAWLESS precision, THEY DID!! I do believe Mr. Russ Freeman changes guitars at least five times to produce the sound needed for certain songs.😄 I play bass but, after HEARING/SEEING them do their thing, I knew I was in need of much more practice to get to this level of play. ONE OF THE "BEST" GROUPS EVER!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾❤💯
I completely agree with everything you said. I seen them Live once at the Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee, WI.... My favorite group of all time Period...
@@yinman1975 Thank you soo much my brother and I see we share the same GREAT taste in music, Amen!👌🏾👍🏾💯
The melodies are breathtaking. Glad to see they are still going strong!
They always take me to an island paradise no matter how crappy my day is! Absolutely luv them🙏
I have seen the Rippingtons 4 times in concert, and every time there is no disappointment, the music is alway fantastic, and after the show's they are always friendly and there to meet the fans and give out autographs. Can't wait to see them again.
6:44 I love when Russ steps aside (no ego) & then every one of them watches with a sense of awe & wonder when Master Saxophonist, Brandon Fields, plays his solo. Even though they've ween him play countless times before. B. Fields is incredible!
And this is why I buy there music they are brilliant!!
Fabulous music!!My dear friend and Brother Joseph Miguel DeJesus passed in march 2021.. He was an amazing man and musician amd song writter he turned me on to The Rippingtons...Joeseph DeJesus from the band Banshee RIP 😌😊😊😇
I've been wanting to see the Rippingtons play in concert for a long time. One of my favorite albums is Topaz with a special native indian flute player. Well I just checked, guess I'm heading to Austin next June 2019 to see them.
@Dreg yep at the One World Theater!
On of my favorite smooth jazz groups. They never disappoint.
Love Russ Freeman... he is a genius!
My personal favorite band/bandleader/guitarist/composer/producer! My favorite segment is Russ's lead on Tourist In Paradise 11:10 to 11:52. Have seen Russ's band three times live, from half full 500 seat community college theater to full on performing arts theater (where Jeff Kashiwa played sax standing right next to my seat). The band is always flawless and puts on an amazing show. The fact that you are listening to only five musicians play is a testament to his ability to put together a stellar live band.
Für mich ist es die beste🎤 Band. Ihr seid großartig. Großartige Musik 🎸von begnadeten Musikern. Einfach phantastisch. Ich grüße alle Menschen auf dieser weiten Welt 🌐die diese Musik 🎶 mögen.
Wow, performed in Hawai'i? Please come back again, I would love to take my little ones to see you. 😊
THE Best contemporary jazz group by a million miles. I've been a super fan since the very beginning. They're always ripping it!!!! The composition of their masterpieces are second to none. Perfection for the senses. 👌❤
so many wonderful & precious memories.. all through the years.. don't know how to move on when they are no more..
Saw these guys for the first time performing at the Arena Theater in Houston. They blew me out my socks with their latin, soul, funk, smooth jazz along with lots of brass to go with it. Fell in love with their music ever since. Thanks a million Russ.
So unbelievably good, I was into jazz big time as a kid, then grew away from it, but have recently fell in love with music without lyrics again, and I am drawn to this group majorly, I love their stuff so much
The Magic finger "Russ Freeman and The Rippington " FANTASTICS
Music is medicine
I am a fan of this group since they launch tourist in paradise album in 1988/9. Never bored to hear their music.
Mind altering music. Changed the way i listen to jazz, funk, R&B and anything in between. Thanks, Russ and Rips! So many years and still rippin’ it! Hope you recall University of Kentucky way back when. Stay safe!
Just found this in 2021...in middle of quarantine...Thank you !
I listened to you guys so much when I was in highschool. So happy to see more from you now.
Bravo, Russ, you and the guys defined the 80s for me.
Best smooth Jazz Band ever!
Summer night in Brazil.....
The best smooth jazz band ever. Sadly, they disbanded a few years ago. Luckily, I got to see them live a few times. My favorite album is and always will be Modern Art.
One of the best smooth jazz groups of all the time with its leader Russ Freeman!

Russ Freeman has a way with jazz that can make you be some place relaxing you want to be. Excellent. 🤙🏼🌴
Beautifully composed music. Been a fan for years and years. Hate the ad interruptions in the middle of the music though. It breaks the mood.
Estoy de acuerdo con los mejores comentarios para este icónico Grupo de Jazz. Larga vida musical para sus integrantes.

Master Brandon F.
3:12 transition... gorgeouuuuss!
Always enjoyed touring when the Ripps were on the bill. Russ and Kim were so inspiring to be around, I always felt as though I had a crash course in new perspectives where melody is concerned after an evening with them. I spoke with Kim not long ago and he as well speaks of great times and memories in the early 90s with that gig as well.
I look back into my career and there are some gigs that were fine but ya know after a while and enough performances that counting is no longer an option and lanyards that are hanging in the closest are to many to discern as if there were only 12 hanging, you can start putting specific performances or tours and sessions in category, and some are well, not to sound negative, but for lack of a better way of putting at the moment and it's not at all a negative when I say, some are forgettable in that I have had some folks comment on seeing me play at the so-and-so with XYZ at the XYZ venue back in the day, and I have to catch myself before I say "um no I think your mistaken I did not play that tour" and then it comes to me Oh yea I did do that tour, or Oh yea I did do that session Oh yea there is my credit on the Cd or the album. And then there are tours or three night sit in for someone because of illness or double booking or ? And spot session work some not credited and early forgot about, and they just stick with you for what ever reason, for me, I think it was always inspiration in working with others that made me want to play better want to impress or meet the skill sets of my peers and not want to regret a session or live performance. To me the late mid 80s to early 90s were the heyday of live venues, in and outdoors and such abundant work one could most often have choices ass to what coast to tour and season, The lame spandex and big hair and weird make up the ladies used I could do without the memories of, but! Yea, that was the contrast, I suppose. LOL
Perfecto grupo
Go Russ!! Love your music!!!
Man what I wouldn't give to have a front row seat of this!
Da best ..jazz group ever..😊🕺💃😎😆
