    i agree, i got a lot of stick when i used to say Kalvin was inconsistent and overrated. When he was in the championship before the bielsa era, he was mediocre, he was on level with alex mowatt. Bielsa came in and improved him, found a role for him, that anchor man position where he is in front of the defense, winning duels, spraying balls out on the wing etc and it made KP the player he is today, then the first PL season he was quality at points, but also poor at other points then adding the injuries, his second PL season was absolutely dreadful... injured constantly and poor when he did play, we offloaded him at the right time and definitely got in two long term central midfielders who are arguably better. Tyler adams is like 3rd in Europe for tackles per game and interceptions per game and Roca is like top 10 in key passes and forward passes.

    Calvin Phillips has moved on. I dont think that suggestion is a good idea.The Roca/Adams partnership is working well. We do need a backup for them in case of injury, suspension etc but bringing old players back is rarely a good idea. The team has moved on now. We have also got some up and coming young players such as Darko who will be ready in the next 12 months to step in. A striker, a left back and another central midfielder if possible and we are good to go for the rest of the season.

    The balanced decision for me is that Calvin remains at City for all the personal reasons he left us in the first place. He wanted to fight for a first team start at City to be exposed to football at the highest level. From his perspective, to come back to Leeds would only delay that possibility. He’s also advancing in years, and cannot afford a step ‘back’ to try to move forward. From Leeds perspective, it’s a system related ‘NO’. Aaranson and Rocca are blending well into Marsh’s way of playing, and will remain the top 2 in our midfield. Darko, for me, is good enough to be in our first team squad as cover to these 2. Indeed, he may even eventually play his way into starting. I believe that’s a real possibility. To conclude then… Calvin has given, and been of, service. Our way forward is now without him.

    Right, Connor, we American fans tend to follow players rather than clubs, though Leeds is the exception. I think it is critical for the future of American managers in top leagues that Jesse and Leeds do well. I think the short, arguably disastrous stint of Bob Bradley at Swansea really set things back , though other factors were at play, besides Bradley, who has been a successful national team manager and in MLS. That said, I'll watch Chelsea typically with not a bunch of rooting interest, but rather to see how Pulisic will do, and how he will be handled or mishandled as the case may be. Or Fulham with Robinson, and to a lesser extent, Ream who probably won't be going to the WC for the States. FYI, do not be surprised if Aaronson comes off for the bench in Qatar, given our very crowded set of attacking players in midfield, particularly Yunus Musah at Valencia who can be absolutely spectacular at times. Adams in contrast is likely to play 90 every game.

    As a CDM no, maybe if he plays a role similar to his England position where he is more forward minded, he might be able to run as a 10, spreading the ball about. We know he will track back, isn't afraid to put a tackle in, he's good at retrieving the ball. Running as a 10 would release Aaronson to run more without being pulled out of position. I would be happy to see LLorente dropped, and JM adopt a 3 at the back. with 2 CDMs I think 3 defenders of Koch, Cooper and Striuk would be effective. Harrison as a wingback, Rasmus on the right, Aaronson free in the middle, with Bamford up top (if fit).
    It wouldn't happen though

    • @ardentspy

    • @ardentspy
      @ardentspy Před rokem

      I mean, you literally have 9 outfield players for starters, no genuine width and only Aaronson to play in the middle of the pitch. He'd be overrun with basically no one to pass to.
      The way you could fix the problem you are identifying is simply to play Adams as a DM and push Roca forward into central midfield. He's not very good as a holding midfielder but he can pass, so he'd probably do better receiving the ball a bit higher up the pitch. Play him alongside Aaronson or Gyabi and we'd turn our dominance of the ball into some actual chances instead of looking like we have no idea what to do with it.

If we dropped the team back by a meter or so might help, but then you don't get that rapid vertical transition as easily. So it is what it is.

      In fact, the system is not magic. It's already been found out by at least three sides this season -- Everton simply played on the break, Brighton easily broke the press and Brentford strolled through our "doing well" DMs as though they weren't there. Southampton walked through our midfield once they had the right personnel on the pitch and Wolves outplayed us for long periods and were honestly unlucky.
      It was abandoned by Southampton, who looked terrible the second half of last season, and by RB Leipzig, who struggled when they were coached by Marsch and abandoned the Red Bull style for something a bit more constructive. It didn't work at Scum either.
