- Getting Experimental Painting A Red Dragon! How To Paint Miniatures With an Airbrush. Painting Tips
In this video I show my technique for painting metallic red, by painting a miniature with a airbrush. The great thing with painting this dragon miniature metallic red, is that these techniques are transferable for Warhammer 40l, Age of Sigmar, frostgrave, Dungeons and Dragons and a ton of other miniature games. The dragon mini was 3d printed on a resin printer and designed by Lord of the Print.
This Video was inspired form channels like Miniac Painting, Black Magic Craft, TheDMsCraft, Real Terrain Hobbies, Nerdarchy, Web DM, Taking20, and of course Critical Role.

For the red dragon!
Nice!
This red dragon turned out awesome!!!
Thanks!!
I ran across this a couple years after you posted--it's a huge help for me working on a red dragon I'm in the midst of. You gave me some great ideas. Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Literally just printed the Young Red Dragon from the same maker. Loved your video and hearing your thought process bro. Just awesome.
Appreciate it!
The red gold looks awesome!
Thanks my man!!
Excellent production. The dragon looks awesome!
Thank you, happy to hear that!
Just found your channel this evening, and going back to hit all your videos.
Wow, that is so cool. I have been defiantly improving since my first videos.
Color shift!!! The dragon is 😎🤯💯🧙
I just started getting into this stuff! Adds a new level to painting!
I just finished redoing a bird bath for my Mom. It was one of the last things my Dad bought for her. ( He's moved on to the great beyond a short time ago)
I filled in all the little pits, cracks and damaged areas, painted the vines with 3 greens, the roses with 2reds and some color shift, then painted the bowl with red/purple, green/ blue color shift paints, then a very thin layer of gold paint. After that I painted the rest of it in white and gold marble. High gloss clear coat after that.
Love the color shifting paints!!
That bird bath sounds amazing! I love doing projects like that, especially for something so special. Thanks a lot for sharing.
That looks AMAZING, and the ease with which you use your airbrush makes me so jealous :D
Great result.. loved it!
Thanks! Its second nature at this point.
Great video. I'm shocked your channel is not bigger. Allot of great content here.
Thank you! Slowly growing lol
Dude...nicely done!
Thanks a ton!
I hit that subscribe button along time ago. Nice red. Great job
OG, before there were 50 subs I think. I hate adding that bit to the videos, but it's part of it I guess.
Nice job!
Thanks for watching again!
Another great video Troy, keep em coming!
Thanks a ton!
an ocre golden would be awesome
Fot sure
rruuurrrrrrrrrrr. Came out bloody cool. It does have a subtle shiny sheen to 'im like we dragons have. Nicely done! Gold underbody is a nice touch, and yea... anything gold is better appreciated in real life. Glad your experiments worked out in the end; hopefully your campaign buddies appreciated it, if not, they just have no draconic appreciation and deserve any fire they got >>:=p
Thanks a lot, yes he have a memorable conclusion to our campaign with this guy.
I was really looking forward to this video, looks amazing! I hope you do a video covering how the battle went for your dnd party against this thing!
Thanks a lot. It's cray for me to think someone is looking forward to my video now wow, humbling. There will definitely be a video of how this goes in the future, but its going to be a few months away.
That looks awesome, I recently got an airbrush and it is great to see what it can do
Thanks
The dragon mini itself is a very good one.
Amazing, it's from Lord of the Print
Looked better after the nuln oil before you highlighted those parts grey again.
I think so to... sometime I do stuff and wish I didn't when painting
subscribed my dude
Thank you kindly
The red-gold and the overglaze really worked well on this!
"It's pink. Fuck." ~Troy, 2021
Made my daughter come see what I was laughing about. ;P
Hahaha, there are a lot of F-bombs dropped in the facility. I was a bit worried there for a sec that I might have to paint it all over again lol.
Omg! It looks incredible!
What air brush are u using?
Thank. It is just a very cheap Master. There is a video on my channel for tips on what to look for when getting an Airbrush.
chromatic dragon there mr dm....but maybe his mom was gold
Too funny, that was what I was thinking when I was painting it
Looks great! It would have been real cool to have started with a green drab undercoat and worked up to metallic red from there
Cool idea!
Very cool
I like it
Thanks a lot sir.
Damn I missed this one. Just when I thought I was caught up.
Me again.
That's an awesome Dragon Troy, it really came out well.
I used the same Vallejo and FW on my Skeletons. I never thought of mixing them though definitely worth a try.
You mentioned some spikes breaking, do you think that there might be a more forgiving resin available?
Thanks, yes there are resin that are more flexible, I also over cured the mini a little making it a little more brittle as well.. however, the paint hides the few broken spikes.
Please make a pink baby dragon! Please!
That is a cool idea
Why glass thinner? I'm new to this and was thinking using water to thin the acrylic?
Cheap, works well, does not cause the paint to become chunky and has a little bit of liberation for the airbrush needle.
where did you get the paint shaker? I have been looking for one of those for years.
It's a fingernail polish shaker, got it real cheap on Amazon a few years ago
Looks great my man! Congratulations on that project from start to finish.
PS- Have you ever tried Liquid Green Stuff?? May be worth a check :)
-GM Atank
Yes I have many times, but I still don't have a lot of success with it... I think for whatever reason, I just don't like spending time fixing minis with green-stuff and putty...
@@FacilityD20 well you fooled me. You did a great job
@@GMAtank Thanks, I also stuck my word fumbling in there as a blooper in the last 10s of the video, cause you're not alone there haha... I turn on the camera then forget how to talk it seems.
can i ask where you got this 3D model? :D this is absolutely crazy and amazing ∞/10!
The file is from Lord Of The Print.
Nice Job! Wasnt Red Dragon a Skateboarding Company also?
Thanks. I'm not sure, but that would be a cool name for a skateboard company for sure.
What? Blue Moon's called Belgian Moon there?
Maybe two different brands.
Great work!! how did the party fair out against it?
Really well actually, we are going to be filming the encounter video for this this weekend.
Where do you get dragon models?
Lord of the Print

Gotta say it. It looked great until you added the flat light grey on the horn, wing spikes, etc. It clashes too much with the reflective vibrant red and metallics. Re nuln oil up those bad boys and the whole beautiful package will come together.
Yeah, I agree.
Troy: It's not gonna win any awards
My ancient red dragon is hand painted with cheap reaper crap and no skills
Me: Its ok girl, god tier airbrusher cant hurt your feelings anymore
This man me laugh... I think it's impostor syndrome for me, the better mini painter I become then more critical on myself I become. Thanks for the compliment!
no such things as mistakes, just happy accidents.
I have a lot of happy accidents sometime too haha.
