  • In-Line Pressure Relief Valves are simple but essential safety (insurance) devices designed to protect a hydraulic circuit from overpressure.
OVERPRESSURE can cause catastrophic failure in many hydraulic components such as
Damaged Pistons or Gears and cracked casings on Pumps,
Damaged Rotors, Seals, and Shafts in Motors,
    Blown Hydraulic Hoses,
Bent Rods in Cylinders and Rams and
    Cracked Housings in Valves.

In this video Hydraulic. online store owner Minos Mantzavinos explains how In line pressure relief valves work and why they should be installed as close to the pressure generator (or Pump) as practical.
Pressure spikes will be safely bypassed back to the tank allowing for both the correct functioning of equipment & also for operator safety.
The pressure that the inline relief valve will release excess pressure can also be adjusted and set to a predetermined level.
Inline pressure relief valves can also be used to protect or limit forces in individual circuits such as limiting the pressure to a certain function such as reducing the force applied by a cylinder or lowering the torque applied by a motor. The rest of the system can still continue to function normally at elevated pressures.

Does the the flow back to tank stay open when you have pressure on or just open when something is not right 1:24

Oil will Flow back to tank any time it exceeds the relief valve's set spring pressure. When pressure drops below the set spring pressure the bypass valve to tank will close.
