- Family is everything for this veteran of the U.S. YNT's. He is currently the mainstay in net anchoring a stingy Columbus Crew defense and working to be the next great in a long lineage of U.S. MNT goalkeepers.
This guy showed during the France game that he deserves to be the US Number 1 going forward. Jesse Gonzalez, Horvath, and Bono will keep the competition good but it's his job to lose. Would like him to go back to Europe soon, as I believe he has gotten a feel for the pro game.

Hopefully he gets out of MLS so he can get even better, the France game showed he's ready for Europe. Horvath is another good, young GK to watch and he's already in Europe.
Emma Stokes she doesn't want to be in Europe. That's the whole reason why he left SC Freiburg to play for Columbus Crew SC. He said numerous interviews that he hated being so far away from family and if he were to go to Europe that would end any chance of him seeing his family a decent amount of times
he already was in europe. when i watched him at the 2015 u20 WC he had potential but the stint with freiburg and their coaches improved him so much. now that hes in MLS it gave him a great base to get pro experience at a high level. now that hes one of the best in MLS he should be getting interest from better leagues

Crew turned down Bristol City’s offer for Steffen. I understand Crew would like to keep arguably the best current MLS keeper until the end of the season but I hope they don’t block offers forever and let him go to a good team even if it’s the second division in England, which is better than a lot of top flights in Europe.
Precort wanted him around to anchor his marketing when the team moved to Austin. Now that the Crew appears to be staying under new ownership, the Browns may sell.

bro im a former goalkeeper raised by a former professional goalkeeper and i pay a lot of attention. gonzalez is clearly talented but also nowhere near the level of refinement he could be. its ok, despite the level of advancement steffen has on all aspects of his game and being the same age as jesse, it doesnt mean one or the other will be better. if this were a field position itd be different. but these goalkeepers both have so much more time left to become a complete player
steffen is far and away better currently. he has better diving technique. distribution, and command of his area. jesse is also talented but much more inconsistent and more mistake prone. it could be argued jesse has more potential, but he has to fill it over the next 10 years

If you watched all these videos, non of the rising stars are from inner cities; I say this because when you look at the demographic of European and South American soccers top tier players they are usually grown in inner cities; and we wonder why soccer isn’t progressing on pace with the popularity in America? Because The US federation is interested in money from white parents rather than investing in the sport itself regardless of race and social economical status.

As a young goalkeeper I would chose a bad team in one of the best leagues but it needs to be good enough to keep being in that league, so SC Freiburg in Germany was a great choice.
