So today is my first full wearing of Birds of Paradise, but I managed to get my first impressions of both of these, so here goes.
John Varvatos Oud - I like this one for the same reason I think I like a couple of other fragrances that might not be similar, but all do the same thing. John Varvatos Oud, Creed Royal Oud, Tumi Continuum, and just for fun, Dunhill Icon. What do they all have in common? They're supposedly oud scents that don't have any noticeable oud. There's a lot of oud fragrances that I can't stand, and in general I'm not a fan of the note, but when it's used so sparingly as to almost not be noticed, it can enhance a good scent. Then you have scents like Amouage King Blue which just flat out smell like a cowboy hasn't wiped in weeks. That kind of oud sucks. This kind, where maybe .01% of the fragrance is oud and the tobacco, cinnamon, cloves, and leather are doing are doing the heavy lifting are really nice.
CH Birds of Paradise - Really nice, honestly I could wear this all year. I was telling you this last night, but to me this is the spiritual successor to Fahrenheit Aqua. It's not the exact same or anything, but that violet leaf mixing in with those creamy green notes is something special. I think CH Pasión is still the better limited release, but Birds of Paradise is right behind it. And since I've smelled it twice now I can confirm I'm definitely smelling that Banana Leaf even though it's not a listed note. It doesn't smell like a candy sort of Laffy Taffy banana, more like being surrounded by all sort of fresh greenness in a clean garden, which is why the banana leaf sticks out when compared to the other green notes.

I agree 100% on the Oud. The Oud is not a main player in this fragrance at all. A much more classy take on the note. The supporting notes push this fragrance in a different direction than those of typical Oud.
Birds of Paradise is 🔥!!! Originally, I wouldn’t have thought I would be as taken aback by it BUT MY GOODNESS!! It’s extremely nice. I would have wore mine yesterday but with my luck I’m currently fighting a summer cold 🥲. S**t hit me out of nowhere honestly. I’m wearing that one as soon as I start to feel better though!!
