President Obama forgot to salute when he boarded Marine One. He later realized his mistake and went back to the Marine.

In 2008, he was nominated for president a year after his campaign began and after a close primary campaign against Hillary Clinton. He was elected over Republican John McCain and was inaugurated on January 20, 2009. Nine months later, he was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, accepting the award with the caveat that he felt there were others "far more deserving of this honor than".
I'm a stanch Republican. I spent 22 years in the service of this country. All I can say is mad props for this display. Anyone having been in a position where you need to salute knows that you occasionally miss one. The only one in that exchange required to salute is the Marine. The fact that the President realized he missed it, turned around and went back to shake that Marine's hand is more respect than you know and far more than just throwing the obligatory return salute. You can tell by the Marine's reaction that he was stunned and I'm sure his heart was bursting with pride. Good on you Mr. President. Good on you.

Respect - I’ll forgive him this temporary oversight as he probably has a lot on his mind but it was good to see that he acknowledges his forgetfulness and then rather than shrugging it off goes back to apologise and shake the marines hand. A nice touch. He may be president but manners cost nothing and that marine will surely remember the day his president appreciated him.

As a non American (Australian citizen) I can only say that Obama brought back to the US and it's people a level of international respect that had been sadly lacking for quite a number of years. He was a genuine President with a good understanding of foreign affairs and a decent level of respect for other world leaders. I would have to say that so far, outside the US, the current POTUS and his Administration have shown themselves to be even less competent than we feared. National Security Advisor sacked for dodgy dealings with Russia behind the scenes (and President knowing about it for weeks), President being briefed on National Security matters in front of his 'Country Club', a Press Secretary that comes across as a complete moron, changes to US Law that have now put the country back at least 10 years, and the list just keeps getting longer. Can you tell me, just for interest, are the current Administration still holding meetings in the dark, or have they finally been able to work out how to turn the lights on in the White House?
Just back to the original topic, the man had the common decency to go back outside and shake hands with the marine when he realized (or was advised of) his mistake. Has anyone bothered to think that, maybe, as President of the United States there was something on his mind at the time.... maybe something of extreme international importance that distracted him. Pretty easy for some to jump to conclusions :-)

On the flip, there are a lot of civilians that go against code and salute. Civilians are to stand with their hand over their heart, should never bow or salute.

anyone from a military background will realize higher command is not required to salute back. The lower ranking enlisted is required to. The officer does not have to return the salute. Atleast he had the decency to go back out and correct himself

In Italy the first to salute must do the lower and the high must reponse. If there are more people that receive only the higher reponse. The "saluto alla visiera" is always direct to the higher.

I watched this again after seeing a couple remarks. I never noticed but he misses the initial salute to the marine in Blues but does salute the aircrew. It’s possible the pilot/copilot mentioned something to him about the missing salute. In any case. It’s not the end of the world either way. He made a mistake and went back to correct it.
the pilots would not have said a word to him about that, even if he could see. Saluting is at the will of the commander and chief, it is not required. Obama more likely just remembered and is just a decent person who recognizes what the marine does and showed him his gratitude in that moment.

But presidents are highly criticized by the opposition each time they forget or there’s a lapse in awareness that a salute has been rendered. I concur Obama is a good and decent person. I was merely offering possible scenarios based on the short clip as so many people were highly critical of Obama failing to salute. I thought it was ridiculous for people to be so critical of a president for such a small thing. Especially one who never served. Personally, I’d talk with everyone in my orbit if I were president and ask them to help me make as few little unforced errors as possible. Ie: failing to return a salute. Still, just my opinion. A good friend of mine’s dad was one of the pilots of Marine One during Kennedy era. He had several non-formal photographs of them together. It was those stories I based my possible scenario on. In the end, no one knows exactly what was said. We can only speculate.
