I’m taking a Linguistics class with Dr. McWhorter at Columbia this semester and let me tell y’all, he is just as compelling to listen to and speak with each day as he is in this interview. One of the sharpest minds I’ve met.

I'm a mixed woman & live in NYC, like John's daughters. We really need to elevate rational voices like his. My parents are professors & in medicine. I grew up with more privilege than most. Point is, this media messaging that anyone brown is put-upon and needs lower standards is not helpful. 10 years ago, I felt like I was treated normally, whereas now I notice wht folks treating me with kid gloves, like I'm a pet or token. I just want it to stop

I'm a mixed woman as well. Just recently a high end store I loved to shop in started sending black people to only assist me in the store. I'm not the kind of person who "needs to see my face everywhere." I told them if they wanted to get technical hire a staffer that is black, white, south and east Asian because this is who I truly am. From that point forward I've only shopped online. This is sad because this hurts the employees not me. However I don't want to be in the middle of someone's political battle.

John McWhorter is such an important person for the time we're in: calm, reasonable, fair, level-headed. If anyone can speak in a convincing way to people of all political beliefs and help break the spell of woke madness that has infected this country, it's him.

I grew up the only white family on an Apache reservation. At school I was picked on specifically for the way I looked. Later in life we moved from the reservation, to a predominantly black/brown neighborhood. Where again I was picked on for being one of the only white kids. I think it’s just human nature to a certain extent to view difference with suspicion. I also made many friends and gained a great sense of what it feels like to be discriminated against based only on skin color or outer appearance. I learned to take and make jokes. Not take myself too seriously. And that there is a huge difference between people with ordinary everyday ignorance and a truly hateful person. Great conversation! I really enjoyed it.
While I didn't have the experience of being a minority in terms of skin colour, where I grew up, I grew up around a lot of European people from different countries, mostly Italians. When we were kids, and even to this day, we would all take the piss out of each other and our cultures. And as the only Ukrainian, I generally got quite a big dose of people making fun of my culture, but by that same token, we would also make fun of Italians, polish, Germans, the British, and the French. Most of us are still friends to this day, 25 years later.
There's a certain inner peace that is developed when you can laugh at yourself and also be comfortable to laugh at others for their differences. Not to be mean, but to have a laugh. I also find that some of the funniest things you can say about anothers culture is when there is a grain of truth and you've come to understand it yourself.
Only white folks would believe this BS story. White folks get the hell out of places where they are minority and never mind moving into a black neighbourhood.

Great interview. One of my favorite things about Andrew Yang is that he has always had this intellectual honesty about him. And he tends to attract others who have high intellectual honesty. Sorely needed in today's politics, left and right.
That's why he isn't the President of the US. I'm not even convinced by some of his positions, but what is clear is he has integrity.

@@Rabbithole8 My biggest draw to Yang is that he largely avoided mudslinging his political opponents. My biggest detractor to other political competitors is that they mudsling their opponents. I'd love to just focus on real performance/policy accomplishments but I also really care about a person's honesty and character, esp since performance seems so difficult to measure/pin on an individual/their administration.
intellect will get you nowhere with the two-party system. The people voting are the masses, and the average are too stupid to understand. If you trigger emotions, you can get votes.
@@laughter95 In the last election, most of the democratic candidates devolved into identity-politics and trying to out-woke one another with mud-slinging. What Biden's election showed is that thankfully most of the people didn't care about all that and an old, white, straight male still turned out to be more popular than all the younger, diverse candidates. Would any of them be doing a better job than him, right now? Maybe. Maybe not. As an example to that, everyone can just remind themselves of Vice President Kamala Harris telling migrants to not come here, because they can't handle them, even thought being pro-immigrant was one of the major platforms EVERY democratic candidate was sooo big on. But, when it came to it, with her even being VP, they were faced with reality and that maybe it wasn't going to be as easy as they imagined during their campaigning. Don't know how many years Biden's got in him, but it will be interesting to see if the democratic candidates will do the same come the next election. Meaning, will they make the same mistakes.
I'm wanting to give Yang another look, now that he has interest in talking with John McWhorter. I really digging the shift to 3rd party as well. Thanks for staying in the game, Andrew!
A third party will only give the Republican party more power. All is needed is a viable progressive wing, of the Democrat party, who will ask something of the public other than our vote. Sanders said during the campaign, that a massive movement would be needed, to get progressive policies enacted. He was half right. It will require massive social involvement of the public, in creating a new social culture, that is conducive to peaceful living.

He literally ran for president as a dem and lost. He ran for mayor of NYC as a demo and lost. He didn't leave because he is "sensible", he left because he clearly can't succeed in the party. McWhorter is one of my favorite people. It's so rare to have a public intellectual like him in the modern day who is both willing to speak his mind on these "dangerous" topics and who has such a reasonable, crystal clear and measured perspective. Before stumbling upon him on CZcams several years ago, I'd thought that type of intellectual was extinct. When he says that he's not saying anything that so-and-so people aren't already thinking but are afraid to say, I think he's correct on many points, but not all. He has some genuine insight and it's more than just having the moxy to speak up against the mob.
He's also an amazing lecturer on Linguistics: understandable by the layman but very full of insight. You should check out his lectures if you can find them (e.g. Wondrium).
It really helps that he shares many ideas and opinions on racism in the US with the people acting out this woke racism so he can make sense to them as well

After Yang got buried by the establishment pundits during the 2020 democratic primary, it unfortunately seemed like he bent the knee and accepted their consultants into his campaign/movement. Seeing these “controversial” interviews gives me hope that Yang is back to his authentic problem-solving self that made a unique voice in our political discourse

Yang was driving woke racism (he visited the rapist that police shot that caused the kyle rittenhouse incident, and said some shifty shit about stop Asian hate in nyc) because it got him attention, now he playing the other side, seems like a snake in the fucking grass to me.

Thank you for addressing the issue with black boys! I am an elementary teacher in a school where I see this! We need to hold the children accountable for their behavior but also help them learn. Excusing it because of their color does not help them. We only enable them and hurt the other children in the meantime. Love them enough to guide them.
This “no accountability” movement attempt at “equity” has nothing to do with raising black people & everything to do with creating division & chaos for the purpose of ushering in Marxism & authoritarianism. In other words, those who claim to work for the benefit black people are, in fact, sacrificing them for the sake of power. It’s just a deeper, more radical version of the left’s decades long march toward permanent power thru policies designed to make POC eternally dependent Democrat voters.
The district I work in is immersed in the "restorative justice" approach and they apply it to all colors, to the detriment of the schools. We had a freshman literally urinate on the floor of the library just for fun and he received virtually no consequence. We are ruining these kids, and sadly I believe it's by design.

Andrew needs to continue to be vocal about this as an Asian man, he has a unique opportunity to challenge and direct the narrative away from black vs white to unity for all and that America is open to everyone.

Yang is the real deal, and also actually has never been elected to office so not even really a politician. Just a good dude trying to solve problems. Been watching his progress since 2018 and honestly he has just gotten better and better. I respect his devotion and genuineness
I really liked him a lot, he actually got me into politics, I say the Joe Rogan pad cast with him, donated to him, then realized how bad the DNC is. I was sad to see him work for CNN, I worry the donors got to him. If he got chosen as a Vice President for the Republican nominee, I would definitely support.

Yeah he seems like a great conversationalist. He can talk and laugh about the absurdity of certain aspects of our existence- including struggles and suffering- while still acknowledging their severity. Being able to be level-headed and attack issues while maintaining levity is a nice quality.
Crazy timing for me to hear about this. I was just in the TYT comment section explaining these concepts to those woke racists last week. TYT was saying people were delusional republicans because of white privilege and people attacked me for calling that out as racist. I hope this book is a sign of more people realizing how far they've gone.

That’s where you messed up. The TYT audience and them themselves aren’t open to explanation. The hate and anger that fills them is not sustainable for them. They’ll give themselves ulcers and high blood pressure eventually. And only after they are the brink of destroying themselves will they be open to a different opinion.
As a lifelong conservative white female, it's beyond frustrating for anyone to assign ill motives and intent to me just because I am white, then claim I am the one who is racist. People who don't even know me seem to think they can read my mind. There's no point arguing with them because they're so convinced I'm the bad guy, they won't hear what I have to say. That is not a conversation. So I say nothing and just walk away. I'm done trying to have a rational discussion about it.

@@nicolette7007 To be honest, I have seen my fair share of people online who talked shit about other ethnicities while claiming not to be racist (some called themselves "race realists" or whatever). For instance, I once called out a guy for talking ill about Jewish people in general and he claimed that he wasn't racist.
I understand that many people are falsely accused as racist with little evidence and it is concerning. If I have to give an absolute answer, I'd use my actions instead of words (not counting how I talk with other people, as those kinds of words are good indicators of personality) to show them I am friendly.
This was by far the most insightful discussion on racism I've ever watched. For those of you who aren't familiar with Professor McWhorter, he has a brilliant set of lectures called "The Story of Human Language" produced by The Teaching Company, aka The Great Courses. I'm super glad to have stumbled across this video.

So glad you're doing this. We have mutual friends that believe in CRT. They stopped talking to me because I defended the individual. They think I'm racist because I don't believe in judging all white people by the color of their skin. My hope is that since I'm not the only one in their lives who believes this, they will come to the realization that maybe, just maybe, it's wrong to judge people by the color of their skin. I get pissed at my fellow black people and some I can't stand. However, it doesn't dismiss the systemic bias that's been part of this country for years and a study of race, a Critcal study, would show us all the systems.

I have listened to many ideas about race ( mostly by force at my workplace). This was the most productive conversation I’ve heard, by a mile! Nuanced and honest.

To OP's original point and Christine's, campuses have been a long-time breeding ground of leftist garbage (mainly social marxism), and that has now heavily infilitrated the business world. People used to say things like 'well, they'll get a rude-awakening in the real world'... that's not longer the case. The workplace, at least big corporate, has completely lost its mind in the last five or so years. We had some college kids come visit a few years ago. I pointed out that the obvious female put she/her/hers in her email signature, my boss was like 'what the hell is that?', I said 'give it a couple years'. Fast-forward to a few months ago and our HR dept is suggesting everyone do this.

A first-generation Latin American immigrant from a low-income, single-parent home. And I'm conservative.
35:21 - at my "prestigious" journalism school, I brought up something along these lines in a diversity in media class. The teacher immediately and directly called me "racist" and assigned additional coursework on the spot. I was only asking for additional perspective and info out of genuine concern and in an attempt to better understand the bias. Instead I ended up branded and ostracized. I have never been able to shake the feeling that the establishment of academia and the news media just don't care about reality unless it's salacious or palatable. This was years before cancel culture took off, so I escaped relatively unscathed, all things considered. John's words here give me validation all these years later.
Thanks for the interview, Andrew, and for the important book, John. Just ordered my copy.

It has real meaning, and generates a feeling of hope, when we can witness and mentally participate in such an honest and clear minded conversation, where linguistic taboos are cast aside (for the most part), and the religion of woke is dissected and analyzed in an objective and rational way. thank you Andrew, and also thank you for your book John.
Excuse me, sir/miss. Perhaps I'm asking the wrong person, but I'm a little confused as to what constitutes as "woke" and how do we separate it from being appropriately sensitive. What is your stance?

The present day “woke” Left is a reincarnation of the self righteous, censorious, finger-pointing, “holier-than thou” attitude typical of the religious Right wing of the 1970’s and 80’s.
I’ve lived through both eras, and get the exact same instinctive repulsion from both ideologies.
Except that the “woke” version is even worse, as it’s a betrayal of everything the centre Left, epitomised by Martin Luther King, were fighting for in the 20th century.
The present day “woke” Left has abandoned the working class, in fact has abandoned “class” distinction’s altogether to focus instead on racial division and race hustling.
Thats why the term “woke” has become a pejorative.
@@terrypussypower While I agree that any cause, no matter how noble, can have followers who go too far and act self-righteous and even violent, it does beg the question: where do we draw the line? I find that being anti-woke can also go too far as many of such people also try to find problems to make sensational headlines (if not outright hostility or even bigotry).
As an independent who I suppose leans a bit towards left, I try to refrain from hostility and discuss with civility. Since politics is not entirely black and white (while idiots and assholes on either side get more attention, there are the less vocal and more understandable folk), I constantly wonder what is the right choice and how far should I take it.
As the saying goes, those who fight monsters must see to themselves they don't become monsters.

I do hope that you aren't suggesting the past was better in this regard. While I would be interested if more people explored the positive aspects of our ancient ancestors (like, It'd be nice to see stories about Knights who were actually decent folk and not just ones who gleefully butchered and assaulted defenseless people like in many modern tellings of medieval times), people definitely discriminated, tortured, brutalized, and exterminated. I'd be careful with romanticizing the past.

Point 1: All of this has happened before, on both left and right. People have done terrible things using similar techniques. This goes all the way to the ancient past.
Point 2: I was trying to answer your original point of people going too far. I think I actually misunderstood your question, and that has contributed to the confusion. I thought you were asking how do we tell who is trying to legitimately having a conversation and who is going too far.

Yes, I agree with you about not going too far ourselves as well. That's why I always try to engage based on substance and not on emotions. I find it's helpful to acknowledge the substantive points of the person I am talking to. Otherwise, they would feel like I am just trying to pick on them, as oppose to a dialogue.

They are slowly realizing that systemic racism in the current day is a myth. With exceptions like affirmative action and black-black in group racism.
Yang is the most open Democrat to ideas. This is discourse. We need more people like him on both sides.
The most valuable observation I heard in this insightful discussion is that other people aren’t thinking about you; they are busy thinking about themselves. We need to snap out of our middle school selves and grow up.
What I find refreshing about this party is the tone of conversation. It's amicable, reasonable, and honest.
It has purpose and ambitions, with an objective, but the objective is not being muddled with petty dispute. Where I find even my favorite news commentators slipping, this initiative seems laser focused on the issues facing Americans, and less concerned with superficial titles that are ultimately used solely to otherise and create tribes of dissent than of unity.
Days before Andrew released this initiative, "Forward" was a motif in my comments. There are forward thinkers in every sect of society, in every nation. This movement isn't limited to those carrying the torch leading the way. The movement is guided by the will of the people who are all collectively making individual steps forward.
I hope people will be inspired, and possess courage enough to run for office under the Forward Party. Advocate for local changes.
I've heard the saying "You can't reinvent the wheel." Well, last time I checked we weren't riding around in wooden wagons. It's odd to be ruled by political thought, as old as wagon wheels.

Time Stamp 39:45, THANK YOU!!! I have been saying this for a while now. Im originally from South Korea. I went to San Jose State University after graduating high school in California. I got a degree in a STEM field. I am not a rich, but I am middle class. I enjoy my life, warts and all. Just because you do not get into an Elite University does not mean it is the end of the world.
My thumbs up to Andrew! It's tough to be Asian in America and most people pretend it's a no issue. He is honest and vunerable which makes him powerful. Keep at it!
We need more people like Yang and McWhorter. I totally agreed with John on the issue of which college to go to. I have two kids in a competitive university and while my daughter worked well there, in hindsight I think that my son would have done much better in a less competitive environment. Matching the right level of competition to the right academic level and personality is the only way to go. This applies to all races.
A bunch of studies have shown it's better to go to second tier "sub ivy" schools, because kids get to be a big fish in a smaller pond, which raises their confidence versus being in the bottom half of Harvard. My friend was in the bottom half of her law school class and the Dean got up and said only the top third of students should expect to become practicing lawyers. Her confidence was utterly decimated and indeed she never ended up practicing law and had to work for 10+ years to dig out of law school debt.
I agree with you. It's worth noting, however, that there will always be a bottom half of Harvard; in other words, it is less of a problem of being on the bottom half and more a matter of lax or corrupt admission standards. It's too painful to most people to be firing on all cylinders, exceeding your limits over and over only to be the absolute struggling bottom of the heap dying a slow death on the slide to failure. Being more realistic about the brutal nature of the competition between talents should be the rule, not the exception: people who won't be stopped won't be anyhow, and those who have better options and less of an appetite for struggle and travails will have better understanding of their situation from which to recognize and decide to take those better options.

@@xandercorp6175 Agreed. It is a problem of knowing how to handle failure/expectations. And, as you put it, the solution is developing the right mindset to not be stopped regardless of your circumstances. I know a person who went to community college and became a brilliant tech millionaire anyways. I've attended two top 30 schools (Cornell and the University of Michigan), and I find that the quality is severely inflated with all things considered. Besides, all this education is meaningless if we can't mentally/emotionally deal with the world.
Malcolm Gladwell goes into depth about this. Very fascinating.
Elitism only works if we buy into it.

I am seeing the Arts funding in the US being decimated by a layer of Equity consultants. It’s absolutely absurd and nothing but destructive. What can I do to personally as an artist to push back against this monolith ? Artists are extremely frustrated with having there work being shaped and used by politicians,oligarchs and bureaucrats.
No specific answers, but that's why it is essential to fight for freedom and civil liberties at all times. It shouldn't just be when it supports our political views. That's how this insidious authoritarianism makes headway - by manipulating us into believing that suppression of freedom and civil liberties is a good thing because 'Republicans' or some other group are against it. Whether it comes from the left or the right, it is never a good thing. It always leads to abuse and suppression of creative freedom.

Amen. I read Yang’s book the War on Normal People years ago, also a really good read. Felt like Yang was the only Dem taking men’s problems seriously. Everything else the Dems stood for was basically virtue signaling. I’ve respected Yang a lot since reading his book and feel we need to elevate more voices like his into the spotlight. He’s a good dude just trying to solve problems.

Great discussion and I ordered the book. The racism of today is a lot deeper than race. I grew up in a world where being Catholic/Protestant or Italian/Irish vastly outweighed being white/black. I grew up in a world where when you first met someone the second question they always had was "what are you?" So whatever racism is, it stems from something a lot deeper than skin color. Hope that makes sense.
