Drive Through London - July 2007

  • Imagine you've just arrived in London for the first time from an airport or railway station, and you're taking a taxi ride. What would you see? You would be absorbing the sights of the buildings, people, shops, other vehicles, signs, advert hoardings, driving on the left, and more. When you see a city for the first time like this, it's an intense sensory experience which I hope I have been able to recreate in this episode.
This episode takes you through two districts close to the centre of London: Brixton and Victoria. The camera is set up on the dashboard and sees everything I see in front of me as I drive the car through the heart of these places.
    Technical note:
You will notice that this episode has two black bands at the top and bottom of the picture. I positioned the video as a narrower strip than the standard widescreen format because at the bottom of the original video footage is a close-up of the windscreen wiper! Since this does not contribute to the scene it would only take up the attention of the video compressor and soften the more useful parts of the picture. Lowering the picture and taking out the windscreen wiper using black bands means that much less data is absorbed here and the moving images are sharper.

I wouldn't mind going back to 2007 just to have a shop about and also Woolworths were selling Nokia 3220 phones for 30 quid I'd buy 5 of those. Shops were better and charity shops had good stuff in back then and also markets and boot fairs were good. 2007 don't seem that long ago but so much has changed since then. We take so much for granted that we don't realize what we have until its gone. Of course things were even better way before 2007. Look at London today in 2019 it isn't even worth coming too there's nothing left.

This look fairly modern, even the cars don’t look too dated. In my area of London, 2007 still seamed like the 90s

I’ve been to London recently on and off and I feel so sad. It’s changed so much, run down and overpopulated with people who don’t seem to belong there.

driving through london requires maximum concentration as well as the traffic signal cameras there are speed cameras box junction cameras and traffic observation systems of every kind leaving you no room to make even the slightest mistake and then unless you have a good knowledge of london to an outsider the direction signs and the one way systems can be very confusing

what i really liked about this video is that i never heard a car honking through the entire video, there seemed to be quiet everywhere which i really like and miss here in Egypt. here people seem to never wanna let go of the car horn which drives me nuts while driving. i also liked how pedestrians wait for the light to turn red (for the cars) before they cross the road. Here pedestrians never seem to mind the cars moving fast. traffic here is a MESS... Egypt needs stricter traffic rules and laws

I really find this weird to think that London looked like this and I was 1 and a half years old at that time and I didn’t have a developed enough brain but I really didn’t like the city it was too overwhelming and I preferred being with my Persian grandparents but I think London was better at that time than today today it literally is a breading ground for crime

Back when the streets still had a good variety of different cars (car types, makes, and models) and before manufacturers began to dish out overpriced, hideously overstyled, and overly-engineered s**tboxes.

I agree. Car diversity. I never thought it would vanish away the way it did in 2013 onwards. Enjoyed seeing the rarity of German cars until that year onwards.
