WHAT STORIES WILL THE THAMES REVEAL TODAY?! - Mudlarking the River Thames with Nicola White

  • Join me as I mudlark along the River Thames in London. This video is made up of previously unseen finds filmed before the UK lockdown and I have been having fun rediscovering this footage. You just never know what you will find along the Thames foreshore and that is certainly what keeps me coming back to it time and time again. Each find tells a story and today's finds are no exception.
I always think it is nice to link a find to a real person or a real place and so today, we take a trip to a cemetery to see if we can find someone who might have a link to a wartime find.
Thank you for watching. You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart
    See you soon.

    Hi Nicola!
You are right, the messages are in Romanian.
There are reasons to love a close person.
"Te iubesc pentru că" means "I love you because"
23:57 - You have the power to change me from bad to good
24:01 - You realize my condition through messages
24:05 - My condition depends on you
24:09 - We are the same and at the same time very different
24:12 - I offered you something important and you didn't make fun of me, but you knew how to take care of me
24:17 - If you ever happen to be late, it scares me that you won't come again
24:21 - You are the way you are and you have never changed to impress
    24:25 - You are in my mind 24/24 and 7 days / 7 days
As always interesting things on the banks of the Thames.

That is the head of a Wolf Cub, the junior group of the scouts. I had the same figure on my Woggle (a leather band that held my cub scout scarf together) At one time I was the youngest Cub Scout in greater London!
I still remember the oath (after almost 60 years)we had to recite at each gathering.
"I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to keep the law of the wolf cub pack, and to do a good turn to somebody every day " this was followed by the chant "Arkila, We'll--do--our--best!" (and a cyrptic) "Dob, Dob, Dob" :-)

I've recently retired and I'm feeling the urge to purchase a metal detector. As I live in the Cascades of Washington state, the beautiful PNW, a metal detector and, perhaps, a heavy duty fishing magnet would be the tools for me. I'd love to mudlark the Thames, although, chances of me making my way to Britain are pretty darned slim. So, you keep searching the Thames for me and I'll search the Cascades of the PNW. Perhaps I'll look into starting my own CZcams channel. Best of luck to you and Happy, Happy 2023!

Thank you for the video. I like your videos better when you have more of the area incorporated. Some wildlife, some boats, the skyline shiwing the part of the city or countryside that you are in. It makes it more like we are tagging along and seeing the area with you. You had some amazing finds this day. The cap badge, the fox head(could have been off a pin badge or a neckerchief slide), and those amazingly decorated pipes. The cemetary was a poignant connection to the cap badge. They were later members, but they also showed that life can be short. They were members of a unit that you would think would be out of harms way most of the time. The one soldiers headstone you found was older, but not extremely old. The second one was relatively young.
So thank you again for these videos.

I was going to suggest that the black clay might be German (or Dutch). I’m only saying Dutch due to the tulip motif and the “tulip mania” that occurred between 1634 and 1637. The price of tulip bulbs was like gold and people lost their entire fortunes when the market collapsed due to the sellers becoming too greedy and buyers refusing to pay the crazy and ever increasing prices.
It was like one day everybody just snapped out of it and realised how mad they were all behaving.
It always reminds me of the “crazes” of the school playground when I was a little kid - Yo-Yo’s was one, elastics was another, sticker collecting was totally wild, with great value being placed on double sided stickers as well as “puffy” stickers. Scratch and sniff stickers were cool for a minute too - kids had albums full of their collection and would show other kids, sitting in groups swapping their “doubles” and trying to make a trade.
Ah the memories, good times good times - being a tall girl, I absolutely loved elastics, it’s a great game and you’re only competing with yourself really, trying to advance further as the elastic got higher and higher.

Hello ! i may have an idea for the black pipe : there is a technique called "reduction firing" where you cook the ceramic without oxygen, making it shift to a dark colour. It's a technique that has been used since the neolithic period. Of course the pipe could've also just been glazed in black. If you look at the breaking point on the stem you might be able to tell wether the colour sits on top (like a layer of paint) or if it seeps a bit into the inside (like reduction firing). Maybe it's a bit small to tell.
And i can confirm that the skull looks very much like a cat's indeed ! :)

I love your CZcams channel! I live in the states on the west coast. We have big storms on the Pacific ocean coast and lots of people go looking for treasures that "blew in" but I don't think they find things as interesting a what you find. I think I'd rather go mudlarking with you. I'm always game for a good treasure hunt. So much fun and always somethig to learn. Thankyou, Nicola

This watching is so much more comforting and real than what MSM feeds us about royals signing Hollywood deals and the lies of rich politicians. This is MY life, my comforts, my realities and it is darn good, the sound of the surf, the sound of the birds, the sounds of the wind in the trees.

  • @vivsalittlebitcrafty4854

Aww fancy building a nest right there, how cute and how sensible!! Unlike the blackbirds who built in a very precarious position on the rose smothered pergola in my garden...gale force winds saw me out there, at stupid o clock, in my pj's tying the nest to the nearest stable and very thorny branches, whilst Mum was giving me hell from a distance...got absolutely soaked and scratched to bits. Sadly one baby had already fallen to its death, but 3 others survived...hoorayyyyy 😁 . Looking forward to your message in a bottle video. x

@@nicolawhitemudlark -- Simon is trudging and digging through the muck -- but it looks like not much fun -- and for the "What do I spy with my little eye" mudlarking that you do, you'd need x-ray vision to see any pipes under the sludge! But I'd love to see a video on your letters-in-bottles (you have shared some before, but you must have a lot more), as well as a tour of your workshop and shelves full of amazing flotsam and jetsam!!! Stay well and hang out with your daughter and son when you can!!!

Very good video. I wish the ship lantern was intact. There's something about copper when it's shined up! To me, that pipe does remind me of a pine cone. I'm glad you left the doll. It had creepy eyes!!!! Not too much into collecting skulls. I had my fill when I was a kid, growing up in Detroit, there were plenty of them in the allies and abandon garages.
Thanks for visiting and dedicating this video to the two engineers. Perhaps there maybe a relative that subscribes to your channel. That could give you more information on them? That would be interesting!
