      It’s the fact that they’re animals that makes them more human, because it makes us think about it and fill in the gaps. Kinda like how monsters are more scary when they’re unseen, since our mind fills in the gaps. That’s why Aesop’s Fables works so well with animals, because we are the ones who will actively fill in the gaps.

    After their rap-deathmetal showdown, I think it's implied that Ton lowkey thinks highly of Retsuko. Saying "One day, you'll be a shitty boss too" I felt reveals that he thinks Retsuko is the one most likely to rise to his level in the corporate ladder out of everyone in his department.

    • @mothersbasement
      @mothersbasement  Před 6 lety +308

      yeah that's a hell of a backwards compliment that shows he really respects her, in his own way. The fact that ton is so good at improv raps about coworkers he hates also implies that when he was younger he used the same coping method as retsuko, just replacing metal with rap.

      Yeah, I never thought about that. Albeit id di thought about how in the end what make him "hostile" toward Restuko is the potential he see in her(big hint for everybody, if your boss give lot of work to you is because he know YOU CAN DO IT PROPERLY- you know your work.) but her meek, as you pointed out self centered, attitude unnerve him and what put him on war territory is the notion that she is looking to quit, essentially meaning that she don't give a crap about her job, that he consider important for the company(also kudos for explaining the meaning of company or society). Eventually they do come to mutual understanding. Albeit they still are on two opposite battlefield so to speak. Also I think that, much like Washimi and Gori, see a little bit of his yougner selves in her (and this add to his bad mood). Damn i too I have many theories about these guys.

      @jtaira7278 Před 6 lety +5

      I really don’t think that’s the case, I think it’s just the natural progression of an office job that if one person works long enough somewhere it’s enough to move up the ladder. A good example was my supervisor who wasn’t at all good at her job and regularly needed to be talked to even though her actions weren’t ill intended but the company needed a new supervisor so they just went with her because she was there for about 15 years

    I actually like how Resasuke and Retsuko's relationship ended. I enjoyed seeing a failed relationship not necessarily being because one or both partners are terrible to each other, but more that one can't meet the other's needs. Resasuke will never be the ex that you talk about behind clenched teeth, he's just not right for her. As for him, as his cluelessness suggests, he may not be the sort of person who is ever interested in relationships, and kept things going with Retsuko because his coworker kept insisting upon it.

      I especially like how Retsuko realized that Resasuke isn't who she was pretending he was. After suddenly turning into a death metal goddess and insulting him in his face, all he does is clap and ask what she wants to do next. While he is someone who does not care about Retsuko's true side, it's for the wrong reason: he doesn't actually understand what it means.

      Resasuke is how people see Retsuko from a outside perspective. He going through a lot of trouble because of him own flaws in a sector that does not fit his personality. He is also are tryng the best to fit in social pressure even if he does not understand why he needs a girlfriend. Resasuke is addtive to coffee because of stress. This similarity with retsuko is what make them have a moment in the bar. But the coffee bugs Retsuko mind.
      After falling to connect with Resasuke through fantasy, she come to the conclusion he needs the same thing she does to get real with people, But Resasuke is not surprise. He really is a another person with others needs and really needs a coffee over a beer to get through life.

      Actually i was rewatching it with a friend. She has dissociative identity disorder and often is walking around trying to just function normally. Between remembering to eat and being an honor student shes often off in her own little world and wont notice anything unless you actually say “hey im hungry you got any food”. Shes not actually inconsiderate, shes just not there in the moment.
      We actually kind of realized he was similar to her in a way. Kind of recoloring his actions. He did not want to date, he just wanted to be seen as a normal person. And normal people date. He also did not want to disappoint anyone, he knew he was unfit for it - but his friend wanted him to date, and she liked him. He was just going with the flow and hopping not to drown.
      But at end of day, his work, a few friends, and his plants is about as much as he can handle. And he can not fully handle that even some times.
      Hes not a bad person, he just cant focus on the things at hand.

    So this series started off as a bunch of small shorts that you'd expect to see between tv shows. The hippo character, Megumi, had one episode that meant a lot to me, where Retsuko was feeling under the weather. Megumi came over to her house to check on her, make sure that everything around the house needed to be done, but because it was her first time actually being there, she had to keep asking the ill Retsuko, "Hey, where are your pots? Where are your cleaning supplies?" It got to a point where Retsuko was about to belt out like death metal, but she was so ill that she just had a coughing fit.
    When Megumi leaves that day, she leaves Retsuko with a hot pot of soup full of the necessities for curing a cold. The episode ends with Retsuko commenting that it tastes pretty good.
    For those of us that have seen the original anime, this is like giving it a higher budget and allowing for even greater storytelling than a five minute block could provide.

    I think Resasuke isnt intentionally a jerk. He was basically pushed into a relationship he doesnt seem emotionally ready for. Which i guess makes it more depressing at the end for him. Im impressed the show got me to go from being hostile and disliking a character so much to actually sympathizing with them...which happens to three or four characters in two and a half hours, while humanizing even more. Incredible!

      mitkitty Yeah. Usually, when a show makes the "bad boyfriend " character they make him an abusive asshole. This guy isn't a monster, he just can't give her what she wants because he lives in his own head too much. It's a subtle touch that many other shows rush right past in their need to hammer home the message of not setting got the wrong guy.

    • @brendalee1215
      @brendalee1215 Před 6 lety +74

      mitkitty I know it's stupid but when he walked into his house full of plants I felt really bad. As it's clear he has socializing problems as seen on his date and has only been able to communicate with the only "people" that he understands his plants when he said "I'm back". It's also really good symbolism for the state of men in Japan usually single and working lacking social skills or the drive to really make friends or have a relationship. As Japan has a serious problem of really low birth rate. This is why I personally loved his character but hey Mr.Ton is in my top 3 favorite character in the show so I have a strange taste in characters.

    I like how Ton tells Retsuko that one day she'll be the one people are calling shitty boss. It sounds like an insult, but at the same time he's revealing that he thinks she has what it takes to grind up the corporate ladder and take over what was once his position. It also shows that he may be acting the way he does because he feels that his position isolates him from others, so he feels out of touch and lashes out at those around him. Sure, he's a jerk, but he may be that way because he feels alone. Decades of work in a toxic environment have jaded him into becoming the same. It makes his character sort of tragic, really.

    It’s weird.
    I was relieved when Retsuko’s crush for Resasuke faded and she decided what she wanted.
    However, I relate to Resasuke on a ton of levels. I never cared for dating or relationships. Literally the only reason for it is because “everyone needs a girlfriend”. I am socially... I don’t even know what to call it. Inept? I find it extremely hard to hold a basic conversation with someone. I can barely start one. I usually give short answers like “yes, uh-huh, I’m fine” and I know how repetitive it can get but I don’t know how to improve socially without it being forced. Like Resasuke, I’m more comfortable talking over text mostly because I can change what I say when typing. I tend to be pushed around by the few friends I have mostly because I’d rather not say no. I daydream a lot because I get bored easily and have trouble focusing.
    I wouldn’t say he’s a jerk because like him, I have trouble reading cues that other people give off. I don’t know if I would be incorrect in a situation like that.

But goddamn, when he mentioned the whole "liking the idea of her" it really hit home. It's been 5 years now and I still love that girl to death. Maybe I'm in Retsuko's situation and I just don't know it. The show paints it all really well by letting the personalities and the situations they are put in do the talking. It feels as if I've met all of these people before. Its honestly some of the best writing I've seen in a while.

      I thought I was the only one that absolutely loved haida's character. He's just so *real* . 3 years ago I was the same person as Haida, in the same situation as Haida. Stuck liking a girl to afraid to say it and ending up losing to a space cadet with there being nothing I can do about it because just how in the show, haida was never considered, neither was I.

      I was like Haida but one day I did get the nerve to say something one day......but nothing came of it, and yet she is still in my head.
      We were friends for a long time but I had developed a thing for her but then she got with some asshole for awhile and then ended up leaving her. After a few months I told her but she wasn't interested in dating friends, which I am fine with regardless of what she said we would still be friends because I care about her a lot.
      However Im glad in a way she said no, I have learned over time that I shouldn't be with someone. All I do is fuck things up for either myself or others, and I utterly hate myself everyday. I don't see any redeeming factors at all. I leave not impact in anyone's lives, its even a fucking miracle that I even have a handful of friends.

    Not gonna lie, this show kind of reminds me of the message One Punch Man gives: Life is hard, and not even a dream job can help make your life happy and self fulfilling (nor do they exist to), but the people around you can help you get through the day.

    • @seantaylor2683

      I'm pretty sure the message One Punch Man gives is: Without challenge life would be boring. Also dream jobs do exist

    • @CombativeMedic
      @CombativeMedic Před 6 lety +2

      Sean Taylor Take messages as you will, but Saitama did take on the challenge of becoming a hero only to find it not that fulfilling as he thought it was hyped up to be. The system is incredibly flawed and he doesn't feel anything from being a hero because there is no longer a challenge for him now that he has the strength (and is still ignored by the failed system all because he failed a written test when getting his license, thus lowering his rank, ignoring his god like capabilities).
      It's only when he's surrounded by people he grows to care about or people he has affected (like Mumen Rider, who is both in one) that he feels a sense of fulfillment or happiness in life. It's also one of the few times he see him smile, and not out of sarcasm.
      The job of being a hero wasn't all it cracked up to be, and that's the case of real life dream jobs. A job is a job, even if you dreamed of it your whole life. Saitama got lost in the fantasy of being a hero after leaving his previous job that made him miserable. He still does heroic things, but he's pretty desperate to feel something for the job again. He only looks up when surrounded by people who are genuine to him.
      So take what you will from the show, but I am going to have to disagree with you on how it was taken. But if it motivates you or anything, have at it.

    • @seantaylor2683
      @seantaylor2683 Před 6 lety

      "he doesn't feel anything from being a hero because there is no longer a challenge for him now that he has the strength" - This is literally the point I made. Saitama wanted to be the strongest but when he achieved that goal he found that nothing he fought offered him any sort of a challenge. When the show starts, he's merely existing and bored half to death and he wasn't even a hero yet. He only became a hero after Genos told him about the organization. His reason for wanting to join was he wanted to be popular like the top heroes, which was only a shallow "band-aid" solution for his utter boredom with life.
      Also a dream job isn't some perfect scenario where everything goes right. A dream job is a job that allows you to live life the way you want while earning a living doing something you love.

      It's actually pretty common, humans are very complex, and you cannot go much about them, cause superficially we're pretty much the same face. With Anthropomorphic beings is easier to see their intentions cause we usually have a general idea of what a character that it's a pig can act like, or a snake, then now that you have a clear picture of said characters is up to the writer to make it work.

    I don't think Resasuke is a jerk, he's just a bit of a air headed daydreamer who is so trapped inside his own head that he forgets the simplest of things. Yes, he appears inconsiderate, but not on purpose. He just has a hard time reading others and empathizing with them. I sort of headcanons him as autistic, as I'm autistic myself and I can relate to some of his traits: his interest taking up most of his room, his trouble with keeping up with people who expect him to read their mind, and him daydreaming so much he's practically sleeping with his eyes open. He's still nice when he understands whats going on, like helping Retsuko when she's drunk

      That's a valid interpretation. But she also specifically asks him, "if we were married, would you still want me to work?" While I don't think she intended it the way it came out, the wording she used was pretty important to Haida. It was pretty thoughtless of her, but that's kinda the point.

    One of my favorite parts with Ton is when he’s rapping and he says that Retsuko isn’t that great of a worker! What’s great about that is that when you step back and really look at it, you realize that he’s right. She’s just kind of getting through things she’s not going above and beyond at her job. Of course he still hate him but at the same time you realize that he’s right. And after she destroys him with death metal, he even says someday they’ll call you a shitty boss. That shows it at one point he was in her position, and is even letting her know that someday she’ll be a boss and people will treat her the same way he was treated. It’s a really great show and I can’t wait to watch it again. Great video🙌

  • @sorapokeball
    @sorapokeball Před 6 lety +107

    I think they did Resasuke dirty. The moral of that arc shouldn't have been that he was inattentive and 'too boring'. Most of the trouble she had with him came from being passive aggressive instead of outright with her needs. Instead of saying "my feet hurt, can we take a break" or "I'm cold, can I borrow your jacket" we get "you want to get some food and sit a while" and "crazy how cold it got". It feeds this idea that our partners should be mind readers and pick up on any subtle hints we drop, else they're an asshole. The arc should have been about resolving her larger issue (her inability to stand up for herself). Dumping Resasuke without taking any of the blame for how their relationship turned out was cheap in my opinion.
    Also I really wanted her to just be like "fucking do it then" when Ton threatens to fire her "eventually". It's clearly just a tactic to get her in line, I would have loved to see her call his bluff.

That made her realize they didn’t even have anything in common to actually bond over

    This anime is honestly one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long awful while. The first few episodes of Aggretsuko seemed like it was going to a be a nice, innocent, cute little anime that’s very relatable. But after Retsuko meets Space Cadet, the show starts to get a lot more serious showing how much love or relationships can turn yourself around and change you. The last 3 episodes of season 1 is a experience that I will never forget. I love how even the Christmas special is part of the canon and has more to the continuation because I needed to learn more. I can’t wait for season 2.

    Sanrio actually made more mature products since the 70's, Chirin no suzu is still considered as far as I know one of the darkest children's movie in Japan at the point of being banned in some countries, here in Italy the movie has still yet to see the light of day despite being like 43 years old and Italy is a country that has always been highly influenced by Japanese animation since the early 80's, Jewelpet is also a show that took the route of being targeted to adults and kids alike, while it started as a toy franchise in 2008, Sanrio did notice how in 2009 the anime had a cult following between adults and adult males in general, becoming like MLP before FiM was even a thing, the second season especially got an OVA that was specifically made for adult fans after the request of seeing what happened to the characters after the end of the series, people always give praise to Gudetama and I've never understood its appeal, it's literally one punchline of being lazy and "I have no will to live" just to satisfy the internet girls with the whole "OMG so relatable, I'm so unique and special", Aggretsuko on the other hand is a way more dimensional character than Gudetama, I see the appeal in her and the anime is pretty good, but Gudetama?He's too one dimensional to be relatable, implying that lazy cute mascots have never been a thing...

    To be fair; Resasuke was pushed into the relationship by his coworker. He wasn't ignoring her out of malice. He spaced out so much that it's his office nickname.

    I think my favorite character in this show is Ton. He's such a fascinating character to watch. Because on the surface he's a lazy, abusive boss drunk with power, but that's all an act. He says in Season 1 that it's because its how his bosses treated him so he feels compelled to pass it on that way, but I think that's a lie. I think he plays the hardass to both push his employees to be better and to sort of give them a common enemy to talk smack about behind his back. And the reason I believe this is because every single time when push comes to shove, he shows that he's willing to go to bat for his employees. ESPECIALLY for Retsuko. Like, that Calendar bit is all for show. He has no intention of firing Retsuko ever (unless he thinks it's for her own good). And when the busy season hits, he isn't sitting behind his desk angrily barking orders. He gets down in the trenches and more than pulls his weight in the office.
