That's at least how it used to be - but it wouldn't surprise me if they changed it. You have to have a person helping you by laying down the final chapters of each tall tale five times.

no it's still the case, you have to complete all tall tales 5 times with all the tall tales achievements

No you for sure have to complete all 9 tales, 5 times, and get all the journals in each of them
I would know I just got my gold curse two days ago and had to do all of it solo too.
Luckily sometimes the game will be gracious enough to give you a free final checkpoint after you complete a tale meaning in some cases you really only have to do a tale 3 times.
But don't rely on it cause sometimes it'll bug out and you won't get that free checkpoint, also as a heads up don't finish off your grind by tackling the 6th or 9th tall tales, I'd recommend working backwards, go from 9 to 1.
