- Hey sailors,
Whilst working on cruise ships there are many crew members who do a side job alongside the main job during their contract on board. In this video we are going through 10 of the main side hustles that people do when they are working on cruise ships.
Let me know in the comments which side hustle you would do if you had a job on board cruise ships!

Thank you for watching
I had absolutely no idea ‘side jobs on cruise ships’ were even a thing - that’s amazing!
Way back in the 70's, I had the opportunity to major in "hospitality" in college, which would prepare one for a career in the hotel, resort, cruise business, or being a travel agent. I know being a cruise ship employee involves a lot of hard work and long hours, but I wish I had gone into that now.
I remember at the end of this year's cruise telling our cruise director how much I appreciated all the things she did to keep us passengers entertained, and she said that it's a lot of work and a lot of hours, but she wouldn't want to be in any other sort of career.
You miss a lot of side jobs, waiters pay plate wash to save them plates, luggage on dis embarkation, laundry for dining room, staff soft drinks trolley, i spent 7 years onboard as a waiter then a butler
Cruise ships really are like small cities - they even have their own underground economy going.
Glad to hear that you all have opportunities to earn a little side cash . I crochet and I would definitely be crocheting in my spare time or teaching it to others if i were in your type of job.
I seriously love watching your channel grow. I remember when you had way less subs. You definitely deserve this awesome growth. Love your channel!!
Thanks, Lucy! Safe travels ❤
We missed you on the Transatlantic crossing. I hope you are enjoying your time off and I look forward to meeting you next year.
Lucy, your videos are awesome! It would be great if you could start each video by telling us where in the world you are at the moment. It may add to the mystery and romance of cruising! Keep up the content!
Love your videos. I can't imagine why you aren't a cruise director with your personality and speaking skills.
Hi Lucy …thank you for your content!
A very good explanation, thanks
Fascinating!
Well, who'd have thought! Fantastic
I think it’s quite sweet. People coming together to make life easier/better/more comfortable for people 💕
Great episode! Underground, like post apocalyptic black market XD
Funny you should do a video about this. Several years ago, on the first or second day of the cruise we were kinda sorta "alerted" by some of our cabin crew that there was one particular steward in our section that would be more than happy to take our business if we were to want to make "friendly wagers" on the NCAA Basketball Tournament games that were going on during our time onboard. I'm not going to name the line of the ship.
I guess that was his side gig. I'm also guessing that management would not have been too happy with this being his side gig. And yes, a couple times during the cruise, we did see him either collecting from or paying a couple of the passengers in our section.
On the smaller ships like I work on there are also opportunities to work as a costume dresser for the cast or the spotlight operators. Because it’s a smaller ship they don’t hire full time people for those positions so they have to ask people from other departments and pay them an extra wage to do it.
And you would not be IATSE union either...
That’s Amazing
I'm a guy and didn't know eyebrow threading was a thing. Pluck 'em, paint 'em, trim 'em - I had heard of all of those. But not threading. Truly I learned something new today.
I was wondering if you could ever make a video about time shifting or how to manage time on a cruise ship?
Im glad you mentioned teaching, because ive tutored various subjects in college (without officials knowledge) for like $10 a week per person. I know this is kind of different since its academic versus practical skills
I never knew there was a secret economy on a cruise ship! Nice!!
I really wish NCL would let the crew do babysitting for the guests. I'd happily pay $20/hr for a few hours of babysitting each evening.
That is rather complicated, specially if something wrong happens.
Legal ramifications. I think that Disney has babysitting areas
that is opening up the cruiseline for a big liability since they would be responsible for anything that goes wrong...
Have you thought about asking a young person in your life if they want some free travel and some extra pay?
I used to travel around the world nannying.
@@emmib1388 Cruise lines already run kids clubs and they manage to mitigate liability there. Crew members can receive training and certifications. I don't see why liability should be a showstopper. Plus, some cruise lines like Celebrity currently do offer in-cabin babysitting for crew members to make a little extra cash. Though since the program is run by Celebrity they take a huge cut of the hourly rate.
This is a good content. Hope I could have a side job, too, in the ship, soon.
Hi sweetie I'm waiting for the embarking Day to join the cruise. Feeling so good
I believe this video could've been titled paid side jobs. In my previous company side jobs would be housekeeping helping security to man luggage scanners or F&B crew dressing up in kimonos (when in Japan) and standing on the shore near the gangway for passengers to have photo opportunities or casino crew directing passengers to their muster stations on embarkation day, etc. 🙂
Interesting information. I kind of figured there would be some kind of housemaid type operations because it doesn't compete with what the company offers. If the company was smart - they'd get these people to offer cruisers classes and cut them in for half - like a painting class, or a game class etc... win/win.
I am new to your channel, I found your channel spoken about in a certain UK newspaper.
Your hair is gorgeous, im getting model vibes from you.
$150 for a tattoo that covered his back?!? Amazing!!! Here is Florida, it cost $100 just to get a small butterfly on your shoulder blade! An entire back covering would cost well over $2,000 or more!!
Excellent video, thinks.
Thank you

I'm lucky in that my hairdresser also does eyebrow threading and facial threading. No matter how cool the wax, it always irritates my skin and the waxed skin shows up bright red for a week or two afterwards, counteracting the esthetic effects of having my eyebrows or face waxed. My skin now likes being threaded and it does wonders for my skin texture and my pores. I LOVE male massage therapists and tall female massage therapists! I'm a dancer and love getting sports massages and some of the best that I have gotten have been from men, because they are strong!
Ears pierced while you wait 😁
That was truly good to know and I offended wandered did the crew have a life outside of their jobs on a ship 🚢
But that's how service industry works. To be able to download some work to helpers, they need to be earning per hour less than you.
I'd like to see how he was able to maneuver the massage in that space
Funny this European idea that you do laundry in the kitchen :)
Lucy... You should be a model. You are beautiful and missing your true calling. Love your videos. I'm just a cruiser (sailor) not a Crew yet I enjoy the information you provide to everyone. 😎
Thank you very much dear sister it's very important info regards from #IndiaNagaland❤
Laundry is something that would be cheaper for me as a passenger as it would be as crew. I can get bags of laundry cleaned with Carnival for free because of my status with them. And even at $15 per, two bags would cover what I bring. Obviously, I don't bring anything that's hard to clean or would shrink unacceptably.
I’ve always wondered if I would be able to continue to get lash extensions if I were to work on a cruise ship. I get irritation from eye makeup so I invest in lash extensions since they are glued to the lash instead of my skin. thanks!
Reading the comments, I get the feeling some people think it is more glamorous than it really is, but that's just my claustrophobic personality reacting.
Club HAL on Holland America may do it
Hi Lucy just wanted to let you know l like your videos , especially on the waxing side hustle but so did she have a portable bed as well and how was shipment approved meaning was this done before embarkment
I hope there is a hairdresser for ethnic hair plating
I spend $40.00 on a haircut every month (tip included). But they do the hot towels and shoulder massage.
I read recently. There is a new cruise ship coming out that does have tattoo shop on it
VV has a tattoo shop on board...not sure if it is all of them, but I believe the one Lucy is on has it
All Virgin ships have tattoo parlors onboard.
My son is considering working on a cruise ship. I wish I had when I was younger but I made the great decision to be a Security Contractor which is a nice term for a Mercenary or soldier for hire. It was great money but it gets harder every day remembering what I had to do for the money. I should have just worked on a cruise ship.
I don't want to know...
Oi Oi!
Morning sailors!
I really like to join the cruise ship but I don't know how to do
Can you include chapters next time? 🙃
Thanks Lucy your content is very useful. I will be joining Princess cruises end of this month and i want to start a you tube channel as a side hustle too. Do you have any advice on how i can do it well?
Let us know when you start!
I sub in case you do
What Princess ship are you working on?
How do you advertise side jobs? Like how do you let others know availability and price? Just word of mouth? Or a posting somewhere?
As a security supervisor I never had time for a side job🤣 also read a few reports of prostitution but never delt with it myself
What certificate for your position needed?
How about photography?
I personally think 15 or 30 dollars a month is terrible pay for cleaning. Vs eyebrows that take 15 mins. It is one thing if the pay is comparable. Yours and theirs. When I worked on ship as crew I tipped so much to try and make up for the inequities.
Thank you sooo much i am professional lashmaker and browmaster. And I was sure I culdnt work this job on board. But should I keep it as a secret. I mean is this prohibited?
How did you move up to have your own cabin? Thanks
I was wondering, what about getting nails done? Is there people who do that as a side job too?🤔 or do people usually go to the salon or how does it work? Thaaanks😊
Oh, definitely. I had a few colleagues who brought their own kit and did it for themselves, and they were often happy to do it for others as well.
how do you get amazon stuff while on the ship? how would the address be. ie: John Smith, Crew, Virgin Scarlet Lady, and the homeport address? need to send to birthday surprise to a friend working on a RCL ship .... thanks for the video.
I wondered the same thing too
You missed that laggage holding of guests
I am disabled, I need assistance with stretching and strengthening also get me ready in the morning.
I would pay for the assistance.
How would I go about finding someone to assist me?
Is gambling among crew members allowed in cruise ships? It's common on landbased workers especially in the construction jobs where some will do lotteries🙂?
can the crew go to the pool & fitness center or do they have there own area?
do staff/crew get a discount at the official spa?
Views on IT Support onboard?
I know you've talked about relationships between crew members onboard but I wonder if any of those were paid "relationships."
It's always the "oldest Profession"
had to laff at the washing machines most ships buy 2nd hand machines and never service them
one cargo ship i was on they had onboard industrial machines from a laundrette with a ships enginner on a weekly service
guess what they was always working
I'l be working as a Cabin Steward on Costa, but I have a certificate of1 year massage therapy course and I'm very good as a massage therapist. Do you think it would be possible for me making extra money using my skills on crew and staff there? Thank you for só many informations. ❤
Assuming everyone pays for these side jobs in cash, how do people store the cash? Safes in rooms?
This might’ve already been asked, but would it also be feasible to do a side job online? Such as transcribing?
Probably not, given the cost of internet on board. Now if you had a way to take that job offline and then upload your work when you reach port it might work.
Ship tats pretty much the same as prison tats.
I hear cruise ships don’t really like sailor tats.
The 3rd world stewards would often pitch extra services like laundry. To make a few extra bucks. I preferred to do my own but. It was kind of expected. Used to cost very little but every little bit helps I guess.
Most of those things can’t really figure out why anyone would want to charge or pay for.
There was often a barber on board but he’d half to be real cheep.
Teaching I always did as a favour, paying it forward from those who taught me. Al, I required was They show an interest end put in some effort.
Often wish I tried it back in the day, just for the experience. Sound like it kind of sucks.
Hello,do u have to pay a sum of 1000us to be hired upon any cruise ship, please tell me,or that is a scarm
Can someone list them for me?
I'd hire you.
What about manicure?
Curious whether there is a physical or online bulletin board / newsletter where these services (at least the legal ones) could be advertised. OR does the cruise line generally discourage these things and you can only really find out about them via word of mouth?
The word would get around very quickly also.
I would spend time in the laundry rotating laundry and spend the time in between folding, hanging and ironing peoples clothes if thdey paid me to make some extra money.
Maybe do a video about Nude Cruises. Sometimes cruise ships have nude cruises.
Hi Lucy ..you have beautiful channel..!!!!!..my mane is Chris and im hairdresser for [ men and women] . Im going in immidiate future to find a job in some cruise ship..may ask you something..?? approximately how much money do they give us per month...??? thank you....!!!!!
Hello ma'am.,
Is their any opportunities for deck crew to become navigation officer in Cruise ship?
You'd have to go to a maritime school.
are there people who do nails on board?
Owch really we can do side Job oN virgin voyages cruise ship??
You ought to be modelling
How to get a job as waitress
How often are you in street clothes not in uniform? How often can staff do laundry?
I am interested in Cruise Ship Jobs ,how can I join
Me realizing i don’t have any of these skills unfortunately 😅
You can't do laundry???
I'm curious why someone who doesn't work as a beauty therapist can do it as a side job but those who work as a beautician can't.
How can I join is cruise ship what process start step first pls details..
Google it
@@philipmackin1025 which company website
I am a trained massage therapist but really wonder how they manage to do a massage in that space, plus do they carry their massage tables with them ? 😂Genuinely curious
Ha ha. I believe they get the person to lie on their bed and do it in that. Can't be very good for the masseuses back though!
@@CruisingAsCrew my exact thoughts! Thank you for answering I’m really thinking about applying to work on cruises thanks to your videos !
Working 50 hours per week plus side hustles? Crazy. $15-30/month for a clean cabin is laughable!
So, really $40-50 for a haircut a luxury price?! Haircut in the us is around $100 more or less these days...
I am a hairstylist and I want to go work for cruise ships. Are you talking about side hustle through the cruise line or on the side?
The Lovely Angelic Lucy :-)
TIL what eyebrow threading is.
My curiosity is getting the best of me, so, are these services only allowed between crew members?
What do you mean? Who else could they offer?
Does the cruise company care about these side jobs and cough cough taxes :)
In Canada you can make $30,000.00 before you need to pay taxes.
@@philipmackin1025 Similar to the UK but you still need to declare it (or your employer does)
Some jobs are definitely kept on the down low (as Lucy mentioned), but I think the cruise lines turn a blind eye as much as they can. Good crew are hard to find and harder to keep.
Presumably the side jobs are servicing crew not passengers
In previous postings Lucy has explained that situation. Very unwise.
yes
💜💜💜💜💜
Are these side jobs the crew do for other crew or for cruisers?
other crew - the crew is not to interact with the passengers in their off time
@@emmib1388 That's what I figured :-)
You get what you pay for with tattoos. You never get a tattoo at a discount rate. Like you should never eat sushi from a restaurant in a town with less than 10,000 people, it's just a bad idea.
