If Blockbuster did own Netflix, Netflix may not be as successful under Blockbuster’s leadership.

Exactly. An up-and-coming brand is only as strong as it's future vision for it. Blockbuster could've bought Netflix without the vision for cornering the streaming service still would've tanked. Whoever within Netflix who had the vision for cornering streaming and took action on it is responsible for the success of the name, not the name itself. They could've sold the company and went and did the same thing under an entirely different brand.

Blockbuster was first job at 17. I worked there 1997-99 before going to college. The best time to work was on weekends. Those were some great times. It was great helping customers pick out movies to rent and also video games. I never would have predicted 21 years later blockbuster would be just a memory.

I loved going into Blockbuster and searching for the perfect movie to watch. Roaming the isles looking at whatever movie cover caught my attention. Checking the games out and hoping I could get lucky and get my parents to rent one. Good times. Brings me back to the early 2000s. Gotta love the nostalgia.

Blockbuster was so awesome when I was a kid. Friday evening, we all get in the car, get a sweet new movie, popcorn and candy and then spend time together watching the movies, no cell phone distraction either. Simpler times.

Blockbuster was a sad story, indeed. Their demise could have been avoided. It boggles the
mind to see GameStop, another Dallas/Fort Worth innovator heading down the
    exact same path.

I bet you the people that were in charge of Blockbuster really wish they acquired Netflix now. As Netflix is the biggest movie streaming service. And now they are so big they produce their own movies and TV series with wild success. Netflix is the dominant hand in the movie world.

Blockbuster was so much more fun than Netflix. Netflix is honestly boring. Blockbuster was like a mini-trip to Disney every time. Adults loved it too. I'm so over Netflix, if it went out of business today I wouldn't really miss it all that much.

If Blockbuster had bought Netflix the path of both brands would be different. Everyone assumes that if Blockbuster bought Netflix then they would enjoy the success that we see today.
I see no possibility of these 2 CEOs working together long term. Netflix is successful so far in major part because of the culture that has come from the top down.
The consumer tolerated doing business with Blockbuster but didn't particularly like them. The general public actually likes Netflix as an organization. They have made mistakes and handled them well as in the price hike and separating into two services. Netflix is also known for treating employees well.
I just don't agree with the concept of Blockbuster buying Netflix would equal what exists today or better. Blockbuster would have prevented what society has, and thus the valuation.

I never liked Blockbuster. They were always considerably less friendly (in terms of policies) and more expensive than competitors. We had a Hollywood Video almost as close as BB with an equal selection, better prices and much better rental terms. At the end of the day, BB's problem was when their model started failing, instead of changing the model, they just made it bigger.

    Hey,
I came late but managed to watch 90% of all of your vids I missed because of 2 things: great content and value (not the same, yeah). You are then doing a great job because as businesspeople, your job is, broadly, to deliver value, solutions to the problems.
Congrats, you made it. I liked and subscribed.
I have a question by the way: We will start our corporation through Stripe Atlas (see, when you deliver value, we, the people, do the ads for you) next week. but we face a problem which is everything related to the financial management and the tax forms filling. We would like to know whether you guys used a third-party services for that or managed to do it all by yourself at the early stage? I mean the bookkeeping, the job of the accountant and the tax forms filling. What about having a video on this for later too for others because for us, we have only 1 week to take a decision on this subject.
Thank's to all the Slidebean team. You made it.

I like Slidebean videos usually, but this one really left out a bunch of important happenings from Blockbuster's demise and doesn't really explain their failings fully.
It doesn't talk about the internal rivalry between CEO John Antioco and investor Carl Icahn, Blockbuster Online, dirty tricks of Shane Evangelist to spy on Netflix, etc. If someone is interested in that, the two podcasts "Business Wars" and "Land of the Giants" talk about the topic at great length.

13:08 Blockbuster did have a online rental competitor. There was even a legend the Reed Hastings was mailed a kitchen sick because Blockbuster was throwing everything at them except the kitchen sink.
The biggest blunder was when Carl Icahn (yes, that Carl) took over the boardroom, kicked out the previous CEO, and put a former 7-11 CEO in charge where he thought he can make Blockbuster a retail operation instead of a video rental operation.

Maybe you're reading and go straight from the header to the beginning of the first paragraph? There should be a pause in between the header and content. And subject changes.
