My cat passed away yesterday aged 17. She had CKD diagnosed when she was 11 years old. Unfortunately she became very sick over the past 2 weeks and there was nothing more they could do. It's still very raw atm so I'm watching many cat videos to make sure I did right by her. This video was so thorough and sort of therapeutic to watch. Thank you

I know this is very shocking and saddening news at the beginning but there are things you can put in place. Making sure your cat is hydrated, so putting water sources around the house also the vet may have spoken to you about a kidney safe diet. Although your cat is 20 don't lose hope he or she will just need adjustment in food, water possible medication if the vet recommends. You love your cat and I know the feeling you're going through, you're probably thinking about your cat at all parts of the day and you will probably be enjoying something but you remember it again but you're doing the right thing by researching and this video I watched really helped.

Here's a tip to increase water intake: My cat loves drinking water out of human drinking glasses, so I got a dozen of those old-fashioned short cocktail glasses--I think they're called "rocks" or "on the rocks" glasses--at my local no-kill-shelter--supporting thrift store, Angels With Paws, for 50 cents each. Every morning, I put out six glasses of filtered water (one for each preferred napping spot) and run the previous day's water glasses through the dishwasher. Smushie is drinking a lot more now!

Kali was a kitten in 1988 at a rodeo arena .my Mom rescued her and she has only left our property twice in her life. im 50 now and inherrited the family farm. my folks are still doin well but moved to a quieter area north of us.
here's the realy crazy part . these cats never got any fancy food or much vet care .(never needed help )they have eaten purina cat chow in the yellow bag forever. i thought it was bad food but my cats ate expensive fancy food and had vet care and still died at 16 and 17yrs old of kidney failure. these two seniors are just now starting to show sings of kidney distress.. i love them dearly .i will use this advice to help them out.

If your cats were never vaccinated, maybe that is why they lived longer than most cats.

  • @tailzzzzz
    @tailzzzzz Před 3 lety +59

It's incredibly common because the feline distemper vaccine is cultivated in feline kidney tissue, and there is research out there connecting the two. Eventually an autoimmune response develops. Makes sense too because cats have already lost 70% of kidney function at diagnosis, so they've already been losing function over time. It also explains why even young cats can develop CKD. Please don't vaccinate for distemper if at all possible, or CKD will eventually develop.

We eliminated kibble many years ago. So we always use canned varieties but in addition we add 3mils or more of water to the serving on his plate to make it soupier which gives a nice increase in hydration. We also avoid cat foods that use carragenan (a know carcinogen) as a thickening agent and there is also controversy regarding cans that have BPA lining.--Thank you for the recommendation of choosing the lower protein varieties in the 10% range.

I do this too, only ever feed wet food 96 percent human grade meat with 4 percent of a healthy carb like carrots or blueberries and even though the food itself is mostly water by default I always add some hot water to make it meaty and soupy and warm like a fresh kill, lol. Happy healthy cat with no dental issues either :) I don't understand how people think that kibble scrapes off tartar, that's like thinking that we could keep our teeth clean by eating doritos. 😂

Here is a tip to get your kitty to drink more: Use multiple watering stations, keep them fresh and position them all around, not near the food bowls. Position one of them within sight of your favorite spot to hang out (sofa in front of the teevee?) - My cats drink out of this one all the time. They want you to be there to watch over them while they drink, similar to a mother cat taking the cubs to the drinking hole. My theory anyway.

Well I ended up finding him after work under my bed throwing up. And then rushed him to the hospital where he stayed the night. I picked him up in the morning they told me to go straight to my family vet and keep the heat on high for it was cold outside so that's what I did. He spent another night at a he spent the night at my vets and the next day he turned for the worst. Oops forgot to tell you the hospital had told me he has sugar diabetes and since he wouldn't eat they could not regulate how much medicine to give him I guess. He will do this 4 maybe 5x a night. What kinda of signs and side effects is she having little baby girl. So so so sorry for you and her it's a nightmare just keep that water fresh and available every place she will most likely be. I had 4 water holes for Naddy and changed them with fresh if possible every 3rd hour. Use bottle water if you can. Nice and cold. Tap water has to many metal iron in it plus water ever bleach used to kill bacteria. Bottle but then change it every 6th hour.

I just learned my cat has early stages of this kidney disease. I immediately put her on renal k potassium, d manna for her urinary tract. And only feed her a brand called wereruva wet cat food. They specialize in no phosphorus high hydration wet foods. And low protein! I hope this helps. I also invested in a fountain and a quick hot kettle. Sometimes ill add more warm water to her wet food. Totally eliminated dry food and no treats anymore unfortunately i used to give her cheese here and there and small dollops of cream. Not anymore.

Great tips, i’m going to start using the antacid you suggest. i’m using phosphorus binder called Epikatin, Mirtazapine gel in the ear for appetite, iron sup for anemia (for 2 weeks) and sub w fluids, using the “shebang” method , i.e., using 60 ml syringes to draw the subq fluid bag and then pushing that into extension IV which makes administration of the fluids take less than a minute if you get good at it (far easier using two people). i bought kidney support gold and will slowly add that in to see if that helps with creatine and urea levels. been giving him oral syringes of omega 3s too, and i will aim for daily dose you recommend. Thank you for making this video. you helped me help my cat today. i don’t know why my vet didn’t recommend the pepcid and it was me who figured out the fish oil via a flyer at mudd bay, written by mudd bay’s vet. she also recommends B12 for nausea. you can sprinkle nutritional yeast on cats food. my cats are OK with the taste.

My cats health turned around a lot after I took her off dry kibble, even the best brands, Royal Canin and Hills was a no go for her, she can’t digest it. It makes them drink too much and she was always thirsty and using litter tray. My Vet said, just wet high quality canned or wet food, which is working. She’s happier too, loving her food. Her Thyroid is normal now and CKD has improved. I also give her Omega 3 Fish Oil by dribbling some in her food. It’s anti inflammatory so helps too. Antinol Rapid for cats is amazing as well. She’s going to start Milk Thistle for her liver and Kidney support. Quality life is better than length for them. Thank you 🙏 your video is great. Im in Tasmania and she’s on grain free, including no potatoes, rice or anything to add carbs. I use VIP wet cat food, Advance and I give her commercial raw canned as toppers. Some Chicken thighs for variety as a treat and I filter her water. ❤️

This might be helpful to some of you...at least, I hope so! I have a 21-year-old cat diagnosed with advanced CKD 4 years ago, with good and bad days. When he starts to lose his appetite, I give him 1-2 Churu treats (he loves the scallop recipe), which increases his appetite so much (and quickly) that he mews at me for two days wanting breakfast and dinner again - it's a miracle! They also give him a burst of energy, which I don't see unless he's on Churu's - he jumps up on the back of the couch, runs across it, makes biscuits everywhere, and basically hops around for a day or two almost like he did when he was a kitten. I also give him fresh water twice daily, which the vet said is super important. I asked her what to expect, timing-wise (I can even type it), and she said 1.5-3 years, so I believe the secret lies somewhere in the Churu 'kitty crack.'

I make chicken heart smoothies with hot boiled water in a magic bullet with a small bit of liver (for flavor). The hearts are considered muscle meat and the liver is organ meat (so use less). I limit 6-7 hearts per cat per day (to keep sodium low) . I buy raw chicken hearts and livers, freeze them in chunks in the freezer, then put 6-7 frozen hearts MAX per cat per day, with a tiny bit of frozen liver piece (about half a pinky finger) in the magic bullet. I pour boiling water over them till almost covering and blend till smooth and watery, almost like soup-porridge. Pour into a cat bowl and then put it in the micro for about 20 seconds to take off the chill. I can put some of those vitamins in then too after it has been warmed . They just lap it up.

Small water enemas also work very well for hydration. My dog started having kidney disease, diagnosed from vet as well, and I'm telling you, I did everything the vet said, bought they're expensive ass crappy left over human food that's blended and canned. she got worse from following what the vet said to do. So I did my own research, and like this guys says, Less protein, I cook her food now, and she gets literally 4-6 25 ml water enemas ( been using distilled and 7ph kangen water ). She stopped sleeping all day, she runs and jumps. I had bought her ramps and stairs for all the furniture, she still prefers to jump, shes only 6.6 pounds. Shes tiny, but mighty;)- any chihuahua lovers out there should get the movie referende;) because i'm also talking about my 15yr old chihuahua. This info isn't just for cats, good info for both dogs and cats. Not too sure about the phosphorus yet, I'll be researching that for sure. But less protein. More water...my dog literally came back to life, like shes 5-7years younger. ♡♡♡

    Dr Jones
It's so reassuring listening to your advice & gentle concern for all our pets.
I have a 19 year old neutered female. She has a long furry coat, due to dental extractions she has 1 tooth left but eats well, she dislikes Hills KD so will not eat it. So she eats Purina Gold cans in the pate variety & Sheba flakes which i break up for her. Shes lost alot of weight in the last year she's now 1.84kg.
She cannot groom herself which causes her fur to knot tightly.
This year she needed 2 visits to vets to have the knots shaved out, as theyre pulling her skin. She becomes very anxious stressed & her bones are so prominent that during the recent visit 2 weeks ago the vet nurse accidentally mustve hurt her as she screeched, jumped out of her arms & weed herself, they continued gently used Feliway to calm her & underneath in her groin there were 2 skin tears as her skin is like tissue paper. So the Vet used skin glue.
Her eyes have been fully dilated & blood test earlier this year showed start of kidney changes but not high levels. It wasnt possible for vet to get much blood due to her veins, a few dats after that visit we thought she had a turn she became bit wobbly & had blood in her right eye, dark red colour behind the whole cornea.
We took her to vet immediately, she checked mobility legs were ok but the vet wasnt sure why the eye was bloody so prescribed Fortekor 2.5mg for hypertension.
Shes doing well on it but her left eye has also changed to this blood red & both are more raspberry colour now with cloudy opaque appearance.
Shes showing signs of sight loss as she finds her way around but circles when not sure which way to go.
There is an eye Vet 25 miles from me but i dont want to put the cat through tests as she's very frail & sleeps alot.
Do you think she has hyperthyroidism as she hasnt the smelly breath from kidney disease.
As the bloody colour has become less dark would it gradually clear from the eyes. The pupils are still fully dilated.
She's a feisty little cat & was very healthy all her life, & much loved in a household of 6 cats..
At this age what's best for her in medicine & supplements.
Many thanks & God bless you. .From Ireland

Please get bloodwork done sweetie.Check to see if her phosphorous in her blood and her creatinine and B.U.N. is its initials, it is blood urea nitrogen, is elevated too high,or way too high.I believe for BUN and for creatinine something like 16 to 33 and I think B.U.N. is numbers & creatinine is like 2.7. To 3.3 or so is high end of normal maybe.Especially with a cat who does have CKD.They normally will live 2 or 3 years even up to 7 years and live their full life and die from other natural causes they just need ongoing preventative care to slow the progression and normally they will go on a long time. There's a cheap online herbal holistic type med for about $30 maybe for 2 month supply 2 pills a day u can just sprinkle on food & is tasteless odorless & vet will give prescription phosphorous blocker like several month supply for 30 or 40 $'s, its all pretty cheap, & the vet gives a prescription so you can buy cat or dog food that's under 5% phosphorous from pet smart or your vet etc,&just show the card he gives you get all u meet, they the BUN and Creatinine, not being given proper info or directions on that is what cost my mama kitties life,& she had just gotten diagnosed 2-3 months prior still had 30+% of her kidney use it was a waste.Paid real good money, said how we r willing to do whatever needs done,1 vet refused to do anything except said he'd be willing put her down, other one mostly great but failed to give the most fundamental info & instruction.Gabe us a girl in training for a CKD patient not a boss or experienced person. We did the low oh is food, found Aminavast online ourselves,& fed babyfood, broth & water in a dropper until she finally ate on her own, then drank & pee'd twice her normal. They did teach us do water subcutaneous under skin at home, but we did 2 bottles in 6 days, then her phos went from 9.2 deathly high to 4.5 well within normal in 6 days,& the creatinine & BUN went down 40% but was still half too high.We asked several times & never was explained how u reduce the BUN & crea etc. She was kicking major butt, best of all bout 6 weeks in.All she needed was one water nag good for 3 days water at home each week to use as needed,& the needles & lines u need to do it cost maybe 5$ total. Then u can do 1 day to 3 days a week use your own judgement she probably would lived 3 years plus not 8 to 10 weeks. She had 30% + left & they do surprising well on 6 or 8%.Just do the phosphorous blocker vet gives & 'script for low phos. food,& we pureed & fed in a dropper so a third or half her food was that then let her eat what she wanted vet said its fine let them eat while they can by all means & that subcutaneous water is fairly easy & not painful for them at all just uncomfortable or irritable for them.Just spend $20-$30 a month max & have 1 bag a week with extra needle or 2 & lines with 1 or 2 extra lines is they plug a little or become difficult sometimes.Just give 2 bags = 6 times at or st in 6 or 8 days or so,then have 1 nag a week on hand & do once a week like Mon or Tuesday then just go with what u feel is right up to 2 times or use whole bag that week 3 times. They told us do the 2 bags at home, didn't explain exactly what it was fpr, & made next appt 6 in The away.I told my mom we should get more water & do bloodwork again in 4 weeks at me ven 3 cuz its so early in disease & we till learning. She saw 6 month away next appt & said it must be Oh,&wait 2 or even 3 on th.She was kicking butt all on th & at 6 weeks was major kicking butt them week later declined & in 3 days almost no eat & little bit water & go in her numbers so high that quickly she isn't survive. She only needed the wAter to live for years yet.The BUN & creatinine is like ammonia & toxins & is what makes urine smell ow it does & the cat per the kidneys use water to go through kidneys & flush out the ammonia & toxins in pee, then kidneys ate working less so cats gotta drink up to 3 or even 4 imes as much to get it all flushed out & they just can't keep up.So without nuff water the kidneys don't flush enough and if her breath smells real bad u know the ammonia & toxins r staying in her tummy & intestines & will make ulcers in mouth u see blood & saliva mixed & it ruins her tummy. All they need is that subcutaneous water 1 bag a week available & the low phos food and phos blocker and Aminavast 2 times a day both odorless and tasteless just sprinkle on food

Hi I have approximately a 2 year old black spayed female cat that was born with a heart murmur and now she's not using the litter box. She's been peeing quite a bit on my bed, chairs, etc. But what really concerns me is that even though I give her can food she drinks water like crazy and then she'll sleep and when she gets up she pees where ever she's at. Except for the bed, I think after her seeing me change the waterproof padding a few times, I think she decided to stay off of the bed. But Thanksgiving night, she started not wanting anything to eat and she's hiding under my dresser. I don't know what to do for her now! 😥💔

That's a LOT of drugs for a cat with ckd. I'm not a Vet. I did get my undergraduate degree in Pre-Vet. End point here, however, is that there's not enough research done for our pets. I work in biotech I can tell you obviously a lot more goes into human research. All of that said, for our pets, and ourselves, always remember both the liver and kidneys break down and excrete all the toxins, but also the biproducts of drugs we put into our/their bodies. This is especially true when it comes to supplements/drugs. There is a point where any animal that is dealing with liver and/or kidney issues will face a more detrimental situation when these organs (that are already sadly failing) have to work even harder trying to clear these drugs. From the list you provided, I hate to say this, but you are most likely causing more damage than just letting them be with decent food and deciding when "good" quality of life is no longer achievable. Hardest part of being a pet owner. :( And often times, sadly, should be decided as their parent vs. Veterinarian recommendations.
Hope I didn't overstep here...just my thoughts and recommendations. From someone that has had to make the hard decision, over the years, with my "furry children"...it sucks so much. Thankfully we can (as opposed to it being illegal for humans facing end stage, terminal diseases that wish to make their own choices, in most states), when and obviously ONLY when, the time is right. I'm getting close with my 15 yr old boy who's hyperthyroid, getting needy as f, losing his balance, slight dimentia, etc. So hard. Wish everyone here all the love and most of all all the time possible with their babies. As amazing as our time with them is, it's always too short, and so painful to say goodbye. Thankful we can decide to stop their pain for the, however, when they need us to. It's the hardest thing to do in life, in my opinion, but also the best thing we can do for them when it's necessary.
Ack, sorry again, hope this was helpful, and not invasive/"troll like". Good luck, and take care everyone!

I know nothing can ever replace her or quite mend that heartache. 😢 With Aiden left behind after having to put his sister Anya to sleep, I moved forward with getting him a new lil sister quicker than I usually would as he was so distraught I couldn't watch his sadness and grief any longer. Not trying to push you, but have to admit adding his new little Siamese sister Aria to our family was SO amazing to watch. He literally, immediately tried to pull her to him with his big ass double paws, as this tiny, freaked the F out Siamese kitten had all her hairs standing on ened hissing at him...literally like 3-4 times her size bahaha. I know this is an old comment, but why were you given saline for SC fluids over LR with an ESRD cat? The sodium in the saline actively competes with the Amlodipine and is too much for the kidneys to process. LR is the optimum choice because of its potassium content.

    • @margauxf4321
      @margauxf4321 Před rokem +3

As for the medication list/amount, it honestly seems just fine except it looks like there's 3 redundant anti-emetics on there (the cerenia, mirtrazepine, and pramin). Otherwise, an antacid, Ca channel blocker, Ph binder, and antiemetic/ anti-anorexic are all very routine CKD medications. Especially for an end stage renal patient. I would have even added glucosamine and a probiotic for good measure, to be honest. Any patient experiencing a lot of disease processes is going to have a lot of medications because there isn't a one-stop shop pill for everything, unfortunately. Also, the fact that many medications are excreted through the kidneys is THE POINT- especially with the Ph binder. And it's important to remember not all meds go through the kidneys, as well. Pharmacokinetics are important to pay attention to, afterall. I have a *human medical degree with 15years on the books in Emergency Medicine, but 17years as a loving cat mom :)

She's about 17 so I'm not surprised but she seem to be holding her own health wise. Anyway I started her on a prescription brand of cat food for kidney support but I'd like to try that wellness brand you mentioned in the video. However their website is showing crude proteins as being about 10.5%. Would that still be an acceptable amount of protein or is it too much? How about the Wellness flavors in gravy that show the protein as being lower? Would those be okay? Again, just asking for your opinion. Thanks in advance.

Feeding cats dry cat food of any kind including the so called prescription diet dry food is like setting off a ticking time bomb in the cats urinary system. Yet Vets still say its OK to feed cats dry food. Take it from me, I've had several cats die of kidney failure and had several cats live to the old age of 18 when I fed them only pate canned food with spring water added to make a kind of stew. Dry food may be OK for dogs, but cats are strict carnivores, and though dry is convenient, it is ultimately fatal to the poor cat.

My dogs are seniors and have never even had a flea to scratch! I thnk with their age their immune system has been compromised and thats why they might be susceptible now. If I'm correct about them having this mange, it goes deep into the hair folicle and may require medication to successfully get rid of it. I'd like to try a natural remedy first
