    • @engvidAlex
      @engvidAlex  Před 8 lety +27

I would try to avoid them in academic and formal writing, but they're very common in most contexts. They're just funny when you stop to think about the contradiction in their meaning.

Yeah, like when should I put “load whisper”? Or “alone in a crowd”? It’s hard for a young writer like me to try and put them in a way it works. Dose that make any sense? No? Oh whatever.

    • @andrewbell2712
      @andrewbell2712 Před 3 lety

How about Tuesday, at 7:30 pm?
      1. Imagine an unhappy couple
at opposite ends of a table
      having dinner. They are alone
      together. The physical distance
      separating them is emblematic
      of their disunion.
      2. Crash landing: Either a plane
lands safely, or it falls out of
sky and crashes into the earth,
      usually with no survivors. But
a crash landing is an emer-
      gency procedure, with both
a crash and a landing occurring
      together. About ten years ago,
      Captain Sully crash landed his
      passenger plane in the Hudson
River in New York with no loss
of life. At take off from
      La Guardia Airport in NYC,
his jet through flew into a flock
      of birds, which caused both
of the jet's engines to fail.
That he was able to safely
crash land his plane with no
loss of life was a minor
miracle. There is a recent Tom
      Hanks film about this brave
      and competent pilot.
      3. Waking nightmare: A night-
      mare is a horrible dream
      that can only occur when
you are asleep. If you are
      awake, then you cannot have
      a nightmare. There might be
      some exceptions though.
You could say that for many
      Americans, the Trump Admin-
      istration is a waking night-
      mare.
      4. Devout atheist: Generally speak-
ing, a devout person is a be-
      liever in God, who closely
      observes religious customs.
      An atheist does not believe
      in God. Some famous atheists
      are Fredrich Nietzsche, Richard
      Dawkins, Christopher Hutchins,
and Penn & Teller. Say you wit-
      messed a debate about the
      existence of God between the
      Pope and Sir Richard Dawkins.
If you thought Dawkins won the
      debate, you might say about
him that he is as devout an
atheist as the Pope is a devout
      Christian.

    • @muhilan8540

Most oximorans do work but just seem to be rather humorous due to the contradictions of the words used: There really are crash landings, working vacations, and jumbo shrimp. Things like "exact estimate," "original copy," and "growing smaller" don't work because you cannot actually have such things. For me the only true oximorans are the ones like those that don't work. I think oximoran is usually meant to be a pejorative term for expressions that shouldn't be used...like "twice as small," where you would say, "That's oxymoronic. How can anything be twice as small?"

News can definitely be old, when people say, “That is old news”, they are explaining that that information is no longer current, not an oxymoron at all, and you can totally tell he knows that too because he spend like 5 seconds on that one and as soon as he said, “yesterday’s news” he realizes he better more on form that one! 🤣 but the others one he did a good on and were definitely oxymorons.

Oxymoron of the day > "I LOVE YOU"
"You" which denotes "I" depends on self perception.
The "I" always .... wants something.
"Wants" to the self, means needing something to alleviate a sense of need.
True need > food, water, shelter from the environment.
    Everything else is extra.
Soooooooo, "I LOVE YOU" means I want something from you.

I would love to make this happen, but me and the EngVid team do these videos in our free time, which isn't a lot. Maybe one day the website will be big enough so I can focus just on creating content for it, but for now, 2 videos a month is what most of us can manage.

I think we can have an unbiased opinion, but not an unbiased argument, because they are different, opinion is something you guess, and argument is something you try to prove with theses and facts
