  • Oh hey there my fellow members of the Nostalgic Gamers' Club, it's Zac. In today's episode, we're taking a look at one of my favorite pieces of gaming history from my collection - the Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition for the GameCube! That's right, the very same that contains the original Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and even a DEMO for Zelda the Wind Waker. Buckle up, and let me know what I should look at next in the comments!
Also, as some have pointed out, this is DEFINITELY less than $200 on ebay, when I had looked about a month ago when making this video I saw a copy for that much but it has since been pulled. Just a heads up!

My grandpa had one of these when I was growing up. We have a big family so he bought a Gamecube with a bunch of games for the grandkids to enjoy, and he just somehow managed to find one of these at Gamestop. I asked to borrow it when I was a kid, which he let me do, but ended up keep it for probably 8 years. I returned it to him, then asked him about a year later if I could borrow it again. I mentioned how much I loved it and appreciated how he'd let me use it for so long, and he mentioned that I should just keep it as a birthday present. It's hanging up on my shelf now, complete in copy. Miss you grandpa ❤.

At this point, I would point out why this compilation was created.
Prior to the release of Wind Waker on the Gamecube, there were already 9 Zelda games in the series, making Wind Waker the 10th in release order. (I don't remember if the timeline existed at this time).
Someone with a GBA or a Gameboy Player could play 5 of those 9 games; Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Four Swords, & Link to the Past.
The first Zelda game was later released on the GBA, but at the time that this compilation disc was released, that didn't exist yet.
All the Zelda games that weren't available to play on a Gamecube or GBA were the 2 from the NES, & the 2 from the N64.
With the release of the Collector's Edition of Zelda on the Gamecube, Nintendo made it possible for owners of the Gamecube & GBA to play EVERY Zelda game in the series without having to plug in an old console.
This wasn't the first time they had done this either. Super Mario All-Stars (released in 1993) did the same thing for SNES owners & the Mario series.

@tomrees82 Great point. I tend to think the same thinking was involved as with Allstars. Keep the older games in circulation so people didn't need to dip into old hardware to play them.
The Gameboy player was one of the best add-ons ever made, too. Being able to play Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance games on the TV made it one of the essential peripherals for the Gamecube. Combine all those consoles, and the library of games you could play on the Gamecube was HUGE. I can't imagine having the console without the GB Player attachment.

In the UK, the only way to get the this disc at first was to buy the GameCube Mario Kart Double Dash bundle. I already had a GameCube, but I wanted Mario Kart, I wanted an extra controller and I really wanted that Zelda disc. So I bought the bundle.
I was working in a game shop at the time, so along with my staff discount it wasn’t much more expensive than just buying Mario Kart Double Dash and an extra controller anyway.
Later on, Nintendo ran a promotion where you would get a copy of the Collectors Edition if you bought two players choice games. That meant the shop I was working in had a huge stack of Collectors Editions for this promotion which weren’t on stock. So I helped myself to 4 copies of it, lol.
I kept 3 copies sealed for many years. I ended up giving them to a friend to sell as she was raising money for charity. I’ve still got the one that came with the Mario Kart bundle and one of the stand alone copies.

I was at my local game stop and there was only one person working, the person before me bought the last available copy... outfront. I asked the clerk if there was any other copies in the store and he said "honestly... theres one." I said something along the lines of, theres no way I will ever have this, and honestly... The only games they played were the Wind Waker demo and Majora’s Mask. They had no memory card, so they kept playing the first part of the latter game. So I've owned about a dozen copies of this game collection personally since 2003 (yes, many copies). The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition was distributed differently across the world - but the version you have is the North America (specifically US) Version. These were EXCLUSIVE in the states to K-Mart and Big K stores. In Canada, a French English version was made available thru other means. Sometimes you might see this version out in the wild, and the font on the back is spaced slightly different, as well as the manual is different.
The Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition was a free Bonus Disc that came (sealed) as a free surprise gift when you picked up Wind Waker. They were limited only pre-order numbers per store - meaning, if you took too long to pick your game up, you might not get one. And anyone who did NOT pre-ordered the game (meaning they where a normal day one Wind Waker purchaser) would not have received one.
What happened was. Upon it's reveal, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker recieved a immense amount of backlash from fans and press over its graphics and was controversial change from OoT and Majors Mask. Internally Shigeru Miyamoto was afraid that the game would flop - especially in the west. So they decided to soften the blow by offering incentives to get people to pre-order it. The game was set for a March 2003 release in the US, and so a few months earlier Nintendo offered promotions at K-Mart/Big K stores (as they had a relationship with that retailer) to offer a FREE copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest Two Disc Bonus Disc to anyone who would spend $5 to reserve a copy of Wind Waker.
This lasted one month, and I can tell you anecdotally that as someone who pre-ordered two copies of Wind Waker (and got two copies of the Bonus Disc).... I knew ALOT of people who just dropped $5 for the Ocarina of Time Master Quest Collection, and then later canceled their pre-orders. This unfortunately wasn't a isolated incidence, so Nintendo apparently upped the anti upon learning of people doing this.
If you were wise (lucky) enough to have kept your pre-order. Those few people who kept their pre-order until it's March release week (like myself), were rewarded with a BIG surprise. Besides having that cool Master Quest collection to tide you over a few months - if you came to pick up your copy of Winder Waker at participating K-mart/Big on launch day (or week in some places), you would have received the following:
A plastic wrapped bundle with you name on it, which included:
    - The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (a varient with a shiny cover and gold disc)
    - And a FREE bundled copy of the Official Nintendo The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Game Guide. The FULL 'sold separately' retail Guide (bundled with the game by the store).
Again, only available to Pre-ordered copies. All 'non pre-order' copies of Wind Waker that were stocked for launch, would have been a version of the game with a non-shiny cover, and would have NOT included a Guide (you would have had to buy that separately).
Furthermore. Nintendo had apparently handed out to these stores a limited supply of copies of The Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition! They were handed out by a designated employee (with a Wind Waker Shirt & Lanyard) separately to people who were already surprised with the Guide/Game (with variant cover) bundle. Apparently each store received only the amount of copies as Nintendo had ledger for pre-orders. So different stores got different amounts of them based on how many kept their pre-orders. Unlike the Master Quest Game, K-Mart/Big K DID NOT advertise this game bundle, and it was handed to us as a complete surprise after you picked up your game and paid. It was truly an amazing experience, and felt very validating to those of us who had put up with other fans insulting the game and our decision to buy it.
The Collectors Edition games where handed out as a separate *gift* and were not wrapped up with the game and guide. Since they were handed out separately and did not have pre-orders names on them - I have heard over the years of unfortunate cases where people did not get the Collectors Edition, and infact what happened was their local store's employees pocketed the copies for themselves (no, Gamestop did not invent that, lol). Ofcourse at the time, how would anyone coming to pick their game up know they were being cheated out of ANOTHER free collection disc?
But all US versions you see (including yours) was a copy that some lucky kid/teen/adult got for free at a K-mart/Big K in 2003 during one of the coolest launch weeks ever. There was a Collector's Edition Strategy Guide (which I also owned) that Nintendo released much later (also rare). But I am not sure why they did that, given the Collection was never sold separately in the US. The CE guide was also only available (or was supposed to be ONLY available) thru order off Nintendo Powers Backlog Service.
Suffice to say though, as someone whose owned about a dozen copies... it isn't rare in the least (the US and Canadian versions, anyway). But it is a killer piece of Wind Wakers History, and imo the best way to play OoT and Majora's Mask. It's not rare, but it IS still uncommon naturally. Then again, the amount of copies of it that exist coincides with copies of Wind Waker with the Shiny Cover and Gold Disc - and we still see plenty of those in the wild.

I won a copy in a contest on the Nintendo website. The contest was a joke, it was screenshots from different Zelda games, and you just had to name them. They picked 5 winners, and somehow, with my luck, I won. Took forever to arrive in my mailbox. I still have it, but there's a crack at the top of the cover, if I remember correctly. Too bad, since the cover we got here (Europe) was silver.

It wasn't distributed thru gamestop. In the US it was a exclusive Launch-Day Gift at K-mart/Big K (and only for those picking up Preorder versions). Nintendo had a partnership with them at the time, and it given out as a surprise on launch day/week to people who held their pre-order.
If you Pre-ordered Wind Waker ($5 deposit), you received a copy of Zelda Master Quest Two Game Bundle. If you held that preorder until March, upon picking up your copy of Wind Waker - you would have received two unannounced gifts. A special variant of Wind Waker (shiny cover/gold disc) bundles (in plastic) with the Official Game Guide. Free or charge. And upon paying, all pre-orders where handed (by a employee with a Wind Waker Shirt and Lanyard) a sealed copy of Collectors Edition.
This was the only way to get it in the US, as a French/English version was distributed in Canada in a slightly different way. Europe/japan had their own versions. I remember that period very well, and was one of the people who was there that pre-ordered two copies in January of 2003, and got all the freebies, and was their on launch day when we got our free guide, game variant and the Collectors Edition. It was a amazing day, and utter surprise to all of us.
I've owned about a dozen copies over the years of this collection (I'm a collector), and if it's the US version - then it originated at a K-Mart of Big K. Maybe she got it second hand, or picked her copy up and gave it to you later. But you only got that game here (in the US), if you where smart enough to ignore all the hate from fans and the press - and HOLD ON to that Wind Waker pre-order until launch day. Instead of pre-ordeing for the Master Quest Disc a few months earlier, and then canceling after you got it early... like most people apparently did.
People forget just how hated Wind Waker was before it release. All of these things where to promote it in the west, where Shigeru Miyamoto worried it would fail worse (thanks in part to the graphics). K-Mart/Big K was chosen, because they wanted a small roll out, and that retail chain had been a Nintendo Partner. Nintendo did not want to do the promotion at other stores in the US, for whatever reason (most likely financial).
If she pre-ordered Wind Waker months in advance, and then gave you the best gift from the promotion... then:
1.) She must have been a really smart (lucky girl).
2.) She must have REALLY liked you (lucky you).

@@Retro9000 The Gamecube collector's edition came out in 2003. A Link Between Worlds came out in 2013. I mean the DS wasn't even out yet, much less the 3DS. It's plausible the GBA Link to the Past Four Swords game was the reason but I always figured the Four Swords part of that game was the real draw.

My copy crashes constantly while playing Majora's Mask unfortunately. The lesson I learned from this was always hold on to your old consoles and the original versions of all these games. I would give anything to have an original Twilight Princess for the Gamecube but they're 200$ USD minimum on Amazon. This game fetches quite a high price if I'm not mistaken.

    • @Retro9000
      @Retro9000  Před 23 dny

Not as high as I originally thought in this video! NIB goes for about $200-400 depending on condition, but it seems like it is running around $50-100 on average!

I only ever found one copy of Twilight Princess for the GameCube when I was around 15, at a local Walmart. I grabbed it instantly and still have it, complete in box. Never saw another copy.

@@WhiteWolf118 I bought one for 20 bucks in 2009 or so and got rid of it because I got the HD one for the wiiu. They aren't that much different but different enough for me to want a gamecube version. I dont think I will ever be able to afford one though. All gamecube games and even the gamecube are ridiculously expensive nowadays.

I had this in 2006. I ended up trading it in for the Ocarina of Time / Master Quest bundle for GC. Normally I regret getting rid of anything but I had plenty of opportunities to rebuy this and didn't because the Majora's Mask version included in this is not good, and lacking Master Quest was a huge miss.

Still very happy I never parted with this thing, a little sad about trading in the master quest disc though.
Just fyi, that "not for resale" tag meant nothing to us at Gamestop, where I purchased mine. ;) (also the guide)
Also, the "controversy" about WW's graphics were really only before release, at least with people I talked to. Once the game was actually in your hands, you realized how great it was and quickly got over the cel shading. The problem was more about cel shading become a gimmick in a few games at the time, I think people were just getting over the look.
One strange note is that the expansion pack of the 64 (required to play MM, and sold separately of course) actually made the graphics on 64 look better than the GC remake, probably on the Switch too, but I haven't played that version yet.
I'm just not sure why they didn't make it gold like the WW disc.

My great great great grandfather, who was born in the 90’s had one of these Game-square 🟪things, with the tiny donuts 🍩 games.
He said, back then, games didn’t need updates or DLC, and had enough content to last you years.
He told the best fairytales. 🧚‍♀️
