🎸WHAT'S IN THIS LESSON
In this video, I want to walk you through the steps I took to learn John Mayer's insane acoustic fingerstyle technique.
Over the past twenty years, John Mayer gifts us with amazing music. I love his music and approach to songwriting more than his incredible abilities on the guitar.
Mayer can play electric and acoustic guitar incredibly well, and in this video, I want to focus on his approach to fingerstyle guitar.
John Mayer's fingerpicking technique is unique. He only plucks the strings with just two fingers (the thumb and index finger), yet his groove is insane.
In this video, I tried to learn the fingerpicking pattern of his song NEON. I then played the pattern over a different chord progression.
Let me show you how I did it.
Enjoy the video.

🎸FAQs:
Are you a full-time CZcamsr?
Yes, I am on CZcams as Marco Cirillo, and I promote my videos on BlitzGuitar.com. All the courses I post online are available on my Patreon page bit.ly/2rMAPYG.
How long have you been playing guitar?
I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old, so it has been more than 20 years. I have always loved fingerpicking guitar, so this is why all my tutorials focus on this topic.
Why are you on Patreon?
Patreon is great! It allows creators to make money doing what they love. On Patreon, I can share my guitar lessons with my Patrons and get paid for them. As a creator, I feel like Patreon really made a massive difference in the way I share my content :)
Do you do concerts?
I used to do a lot of gigs in the past. London is a great place to play music almost every day. When my CZcams channel started to grow, I decided to go all-in and try to help as many people as possible learning guitar. This goal takes all the time I have available, so I am not doing any gig or concert.

The anti-copyright neon in the beginning 😂🙌🏾
True lol. Even though I never wanted to learn the song in the first place. Did you see the chords?! Lol
@@MarcoCirillo can you actually play the real one?

Love your approach to interpret JM’s neon in your own way.
This is going to be one of your most viewed videos! This breakdown of a complex technique from a studied classical guitarplayer is right what good guitarplayers Need!! Please more of it!!
I love the fact that he refered to Paul davids for the video ....respect 🖐️🖐️🖐️
pretty cool - your intro is golden - i like how you things mix up - its so awesome to see your constant developement in video editing and entertainment in your lessons - great job !
I've been working on this song for over a month now.. I'm about 95% of the way there.. it's amazing to see you getting the picking pattern down so quickly.. getting that technique down perfect is essential in getting the whole song down.. the arpeggios he does later and even the crazy improvs he does uses that technique. So learning this using PIMA is nearly impossible imo.
I agree. The songs doesn’t sound the same with the “usual” Fingerstyle technique. You really have to use the exact patter he does.
Simply great! One of the best video I've ever seen.
"Sometimes breaking the rules can actually take you where you're supposed to be". I don't think that was intended to sound like a quote or inspirational but it did lol. True.💫
Thanks Mara.
Awesome. Loved seeing your learning process. Thanks Marco !
Your video helped me to learn the two finger picking pattern! I was struggling with it for a long time and through this video I finally got my "aha" moment. Thanks a million :)
I love the first part of the video..... ❤️
That was a pretty unique think 🙃✌️✌️
Great video lesson!!! Thank you🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Always inspiring Marco 👍👍👍 Well done👌
Marco, you are a great teacher. Thank you. 🙏
Brother Marco in this video your way of teaching guitar is so awesome, unique and most of all it is indeed very eye opening.
Big thanks to you and also to John Mayer..
Have a blessed Good Friday
from Northeast India
You provide such a quality lessons. Thank you so much sir!
Great video, great playing, but your thoughts in the last few moments of the video were the best part. Thanks so much
Your video and message must resonate with everyone who have been trained playing the nylon string all these years and are completely embarassed by percussive picking. Thank you for putting this so honestly together.
I actually love these kind of vdo like this one Marco .I had been playing guitar from 4 years but i actually didn't knowing that we can do these kind of creativity. As usual i am inspired much from u. And bcs of u i'm improvising my skills to perform quirky. Thank u so much. Pls keep offer these type of vdo's
Today i learned something new n unique..
Thanks dude!!💖💖
Beautiful lesson Marco! Thank you 👍🏽👍🏽
One of the best arrangements so far....
Well done marco❤🎉
Another awesome video Marco. Not just the music but the philosophy behind it- Never stop learning.
I also find it refreshing and encouraging when the teacher admits that he can have difficulty playing something too. Thanks for that as well.
Appreciate the effort you put in to your intro!
Really awesome that you showed that also skilled players has to practice. Thumps up, definitely!
Awesome video. Really nice to see someone of your skill learn and work your way through it. This is something that is 'hidden' in CZcams, where people just show off the final, polished version.
the intro is going to be my new ringtone! i dunno why I love it so much ❤️❤️
Outstanding vid!!
i love ur vids ,i've really improved . ur videos are always inspiring
I *loved* the starting segment, great humour, instantly got my subscribe (though I'll admit I also recall your name from having thought me something else in the past, so was only about time) ^^
Yes what a great lesson! Learning the interesting parts of songs that inspire you to work on something new. That's what keeps playing guitar fun for me. Thank you for saying what I am doing is okay.
Thanks Michael.
an honest video. Subscribed❤
Well done ◇ Excellent advice on how to progress♡
Fantastic great video!
I NEEDED THIS
Wow ! You are amazing ! God bless you.
When it started it was so funny I could not stop laughing 😂 well done buddy 👍🏻⭐️😀
Finally you covered john mayer 😍
Thank you for saying that learning a small piece of a song is beneficial. I've been feeling guilty for learning that way for a while.
🤣🤣🤣 Love you Marco
Happy new year to you ❤️
The Intro 💯!!
sos un grande marco!!
Marco, thanks for technique learning
Great video
Thank u for finger plugging guiter solo
Amaizing bro
Very Interesting, thank you.
The picking method is very reminiscent of drop-thumb clawhammer banjo. I play clawhammer and have tried applying it to guitar with mixed results. Cool to see someone doing it well.
This one is dope. Love it
Thanks Mark.
Marco this is a great video. Your use of the picking methodology was very interesting. Can you share which model Furch guitar you played in the video? Thanks for posting the video, I learned a lot from it.
Damn i love this video ❤️
Great lesson on challenging your abilities and so true you can teach an old Dog new tricks, those chords are a challenge though haha 🤣🤣
Love From Indonesia Marco❤️
Thanks sir🙏
Aww the starting though ♥️♥️😍♥️😍♥️😍♥️😍
Agreed. Tomo Fujita's fingerstyle technique is insane.

Not sure that’s how he learned it...thought John got it from Charlie Hunter? Never seen Tomo do it and have watched tons of his videos
No, Tomo taught John about blues soloing. John Mayer slap thing is not his invention,he just made it popular by his songwriting skills
@@aung1406 Im aware people believe he "made it popular" even though countless others did it before him, but ive seen Tomo use that technique multiple times playing blues and jazz and I find it hard to believe him being Johns teacher had no impact on that. Im not saying Tomo made it either, just that I feel Tomo playing 1 on 1 with him had a major impact on that. Regardless it doesn't matter much, so many guitar players take influence from others, its not plagiarism its just give credit where its due, and don't call it John Mayers technique for clickbait because its not his technique, people decades older did it decades before the same way.
Wow . perfect .
Hi Marco, I love your videos, you have helped me so much. I know you were classically trained, do you ever play in the classical position. I am a newer player and have tried both, what do you recommend?
Totally hooked on Marco's chord progression of neon :')
the fact you got the song notes wrong but still kept going and vibing made the video loved it
oh my god !! the intro 😱😱😱😱
Mark my words this is going to be highest viewed video on this channel
Let’s hope ☀️🎸
Thank you, Marco Cirillo.
I think I've learned something.
commn Marco I love the intro 🤩🤩 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love from India❤️❤️
Love seeing the ukulele on the dresser behind you. Did you get your baritone yet?
Great to be the 1,000th like. "Girly strings" haha, I spat my drink out. Watch out for the PC police.
Fun start 😂
This technique reminds me of clawhammer banjo drop thumb, I’ve played clawhammer banjo for many years and this would be a more natural way of finger picking guitar for someone transitioning from banjo to guitar
5:13 down up down up, groove from the elbow, tactile!
Weeks to learn the unique finger style technique ayyy
It's hard to play with all your fingers! I've only ever know how to pick with two fingers as well I'm trying but it's not for me but your still my favourite teacher on CZcams
Lol the chords and the skit was aswm
0:35 super cool
Plzz make tutorial on the very first music u played in this video plxz
Literally literally super funny 🤣🤣
Hey Marco, actually the consideration you made in the first part of the video are very interesting.
Do you think they apply to the blues as well? Most of the blues players use 2/3 fingers with a lot of palm muting. I am self taught player and to be honest I prefer to stick to the classical way of playing (4 fingers, tilted guitar) because I find it more rational (and healthy), so I am not sure it is worth to learn a new way of playing or not. I noticed that mixing palm muting and 4 fingers playing seems quite difficult, so I suppose I just have to lean the "blues way"....what a dilemma :).
True. Palm muting with four fingers feels very weird. I think it comes done to versatility. Since you’ve already developed the four fingers picking, try the two/three fingers option. You can use both :)
Pls put all scales and chords try to not make random video because it would be a hard way for us to find it. Pls make a playlist of scale . And rest u r doing amazing sir. I got really good things to learn on from &it really motivated me. . & lots of love. For u from inda & many fans this side we are like 5-4= students learning & practicing from your chanel. Great job 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
The fact you got John Mayer to play in your video is pretty cool! I still like you better tho
Are you implying that this is best played on high tension strings? I generally use mid tension strings, and also noticed the buzzing aspect you mentioned
Bro outfit is fire....!
❤️
First one to comment!! Cuz I know it’ll be great as always ❤️✌🏻
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Yayy
Sir How to tune my guitar as cadgbe, I won’t lie I searched it everywhere and couldn’t fine? Thanx for this tutorial, I have to learn this. Love your videos
Lower your thick E string to C. This means, instead of tuning your thick E string normally, tune it down to C
@@shhivanshh how would I know if it is c or a
@@blee0d ???? You use a tuner, I don't understand the question. Sorry
@@Saacary there is no c string option on GuitarTuna, the app I use to tune my guitar. So how to know whether it is or not?
@@blee0d I use Bandlab app. There's a built in guitar tuner in it.. just pick general/chromatic settings to tune the bass C note
I keep practice
I didn't know you had a twin brother dude hehe 😜
Maybe you can do a video on Something like Olivia?
Hmmm so it is only possible to play with thumb-over chords? I thought lowering the thumb behind the neck is the most important haha damn also playing on a classical guitar now 😂😂😂 thanks marco
Can you plaese make a tutorial on titanic hymn to the sea
lol. these new skits are funny. more
5:08
How tune the e to c?
Tuned down two whole steps, hence why you may need to put a heavier gauge low e string for this song. It’s gonna loosen that string a lot.
I can’t see what he’s doing, because I am blind. But what how he explains it, it sounds like John Mayer has learned some to finger technique for a travis pack. It sounds like a ukulele pick pattern that he only uses two fingers to do. With that little sore thumb slap technique mixed in and a mute.
You should review Tommy Emmanuel!
Hello
I just came across a song called Nuestro cosmo that used one of your songs in the beat you should check it out
Damn I just found another one called lately by John marsh
I just play the song on my guitar with the Google search song thing listening and songs will come up
I remember you making a video about people stealing your music
The last time i used my thumb for G string i woke up in hospital
Lol
🤣
Hmmm I hear the audio but video is just black screen. Anyone else?
