    🎸WHAT'S IN THIS LESSON
In this video, I want to walk you through the steps I took to learn John Mayer's insane acoustic fingerstyle technique.
Over the past twenty years, John Mayer gifts us with amazing music. I love his music and approach to songwriting more than his incredible abilities on the guitar.
Mayer can play electric and acoustic guitar incredibly well, and in this video, I want to focus on his approach to fingerstyle guitar.
John Mayer's fingerpicking technique is unique. He only plucks the strings with just two fingers (the thumb and index finger), yet his groove is insane.
In this video, I tried to learn the fingerpicking pattern of his song NEON. I then played the pattern over a different chord progression.
Let me show you how I did it.
    Enjoy the video.

    🎸FAQs:
    Are you a full-time CZcamsr?
Yes, I am on CZcams as Marco Cirillo, and I promote my videos on BlitzGuitar.com. All the courses I post online are available on my Patreon page bit.ly/2rMAPYG.
How long have you been playing guitar?
I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old, so it has been more than 20 years. I have always loved fingerpicking guitar, so this is why all my tutorials focus on this topic.
    Why are you on Patreon?
Patreon is great! It allows creators to make money doing what they love. On Patreon, I can share my guitar lessons with my Patrons and get paid for them. As a creator, I feel like Patreon really made a massive difference in the way I share my content :)
    Do you do concerts?
I used to do a lot of gigs in the past. London is a great place to play music almost every day. When my CZcams channel started to grow, I decided to go all-in and try to help as many people as possible learning guitar. This goal takes all the time I have available, so I am not doing any gig or concert.

I've been working on this song for over a month now.. I'm about 95% of the way there.. it's amazing to see you getting the picking pattern down so quickly.. getting that technique down perfect is essential in getting the whole song down.. the arpeggios he does later and even the crazy improvs he does uses that technique. So learning this using PIMA is nearly impossible imo.

    • @MarcoCirillo

@@aung1406 Im aware people believe he "made it popular" even though countless others did it before him, but ive seen Tomo use that technique multiple times playing blues and jazz and I find it hard to believe him being Johns teacher had no impact on that. Im not saying Tomo made it either, just that I feel Tomo playing 1 on 1 with him had a major impact on that. Regardless it doesn't matter much, so many guitar players take influence from others, its not plagiarism its just give credit where its due, and don't call it John Mayers technique for clickbait because its not his technique, people decades older did it decades before the same way.

Hey Marco, actually the consideration you made in the first part of the video are very interesting.
Do you think they apply to the blues as well? Most of the blues players use 2/3 fingers with a lot of palm muting. I am self taught player and to be honest I prefer to stick to the classical way of playing (4 fingers, tilted guitar) because I find it more rational (and healthy), so I am not sure it is worth to learn a new way of playing or not. I noticed that mixing palm muting and 4 fingers playing seems quite difficult, so I suppose I just have to lean the "blues way"....what a dilemma :).

    • @MarcoCirillo
      @MarcoCirillo  Před 3 lety

True. Palm muting with four fingers feels very weird. I think it comes done to versatility. Since you’ve already developed the four fingers picking, try the two/three fingers option. You can use both :)
