The Ghosts Of Culloden Sung By Isla Grant

  • The Battle of Culloden (Scottish Gaelic: Blàr Chùil Lodair) (16 April 1746) was the final clash between the French-supported Jacobites and the Hanoverian British Government in the 1745 Jacobite Rising. Culloden dealt the Jacobite cause-to restore the House of Stuart to the throne of the Kingdom of Great Britain-a decisive defeat.
    The Jacobites, largely Highland Scots, supported the claim of James Francis Edward Stuart (the "Old Pretender") to the throne. The government army, under the Duke of Cumberland, younger son of the Hanoverian sovereign, King George II, supported his father's cause. It too included Highland Scots, as well as Scottish Lowlanders and English troops.
    The aftermath of the battle was brutal and earned the victorious general the nickname "Butcher" Cumberland. Charles Edward Stuart eventually left Britain and went to Rome, never to attempt to take the throne again. Civil penalties were severe with new laws that attacked the Highlanders' clan system. Highland dress was now to be restricted to use by the British Army.
    Many brave scotts died in the battle fighting for their land and familys ,i would do exactly the same and im sure any human would.

      It is sad to see any country loose all they once stood for. That is true for the U.S. as well. We will never again see the good old days.

      threefeathers Colby I kind of think that for all our blustering about how far we have come as a species the day will come when we will fall. The Dark Ages will come again. People will return to their families, which will grow, we will return to the old ways because that is all we will have. Modern Society is a veneer that is so easily cracked.

      threefeathers Colby I don't think we can count on divine intervention in this case. Either mankind will rise to the challenge, we will learn to be free ourselves and let others be, or (more likely) we will continue the endless dance between the tyrants that are in power, and "freedom" fighters that merely wish to be in charge themselves.

    @tiree2007 I have studied History for over 50 of my 61 years. I have found that most history written in books is either written by the victors, or by the vanquished justifying their respective causes. A wise old man once told me; "if you want to learn the true history, read the letters written by those who lived it. For they have no axe to grind, just an honest recounting of events as they lived them because those being written to knew the truth".

    the saddest thing is it was more of a civil war, with Scots fighting for German George against Scots fighting for the true king. No one I know that have visited Culloden were affected by it and shed a few tears for those gallent Highlanders and thinking of what came after.

Its so easy to be critical of each others faults, Scotland will no longer be suppressed by Westminster.Independence is coming soon, time to move on for both countries.

    England and Scotland were united dynastically under the house of Stuart, when the Stuarts were overthrown in the 1688 Glorious Revolution they attempted to regain the throne of both England and Scotland, which had passed to the House of Hanover. If memory serves me right it was Highlander against Lowlander and Prince Charles himself picked a battlefield that was a death sentence for his men, against the advice of his generals and when the battle turned into a route he took off and never returned

      If you work hard enough, you can be. The lad is only saying that the aim of Charles wasn't to free Scotland, but to regain rule over it, England, Wales and my native Ireland. It was a civil war for control of a nation, not a fight for "liberty".

  • @hitmann2300
    @hitmann2300 Před 13 lety

    The sad thing is that this song is not even based on Historic FACTS. As others have said, it was not about fighting for "Liberty" Charlie wanted the BRITISH throne for the Stuarts. Many Clansmen were either forced to fight, or did so out of Loyalty to the Clan chief, they werent thinking about Freeing Scotland. For some, it gave them a chance top get some revenge on an enemy clan, like the Campbells.
    The History has been so twisted in recent years and it is songs like this one that add to theBS

    It wasn't as simple as Highlander against Lowlander, or Catholic against Protestant. When the two armies faced each other at Culloden, it would have been more than likely that people would have seen their own relatives in their enemies ranks.
    This war turned brother against brother, father against son. The only deciding demographic here was opinion.
