'Professor A. I. Abrikosov was the first doctor who operated on the body of the Father of the Revolution after his death in order to save it from decay. Zbarsky writes in his memoirs:
"Arriving in Moscow on February 28, 1924, Vorobiov went to Red Square, where Krasin and Professor Abrikosov were waiting for him. Anatomo-pathologist of repute, Abrikosov had been assigned, in the aftermath of Lenin's death, to perform the autopsy and embalm the body. Upon entering the temporary mausoleum, Vorobiov was immediately struck by the poor condition of the corpse. However, not wanting to offend the sensibilities of an influential man like Professor Abrikosov, he complimented him for "being able to preserve the body for more than a month in such a satisfactory state."
The method Abrikossov used was actually quite primitive. It consisted of injecting six liters of a solution of formol, alcohol and glycerin into the aorta. Some of the liquid, however, had leaked from the corpse, and so it seemed that nothing could stop the ongoing process of desiccation."
